Hunt ID: NM-8225 Private and Public Land Hunts with reduced Prices. This outfitter has found ways to supply these hunts at an extremely low price by just providing guiding instead of adding an exorbitant rate that most outfitter charge when they include meals and lodging. In addition, his hunt location he supplies access to lower priced motels and local restaurants. The bottom line is we all need a place to stay and night and food to eat. This way you have the choice to bring a camping trailer, tent, or select the motel you wish to use. The same with the meals, you can eat at McDonalds or steak houses, you decide. To even cut his guide costs, he lets you feed him, this is thinking out of the box, to save the hunter as much money as possible. As the insurance company says on TV. You only Pay for what you need! See What the Land of Enchantment has for you with a guided hunt without the frills, just great hunting at a great price.

New Mexico Draw, Hunting 101, Get the Outfitter endorsement to improve you drawing odds.

Deadline to apply is March 18, contact us to help with application process, Options much more limited after that time.

New Mexico is the Land of Enchantment is a world of mysterious hunt license drawing and no points are used or awarded making draw calculation extremely difficult, so you put all you can in your corner with an outfitter endorsement and “Spin the Wheel.” We have extremely good success with this, but not 100% as in other states.

It can be the most difficult place for a non-resident unless you pick your battles and plan for them. The squeeze on the non-resident to make him pick another state to hunt is intense, but there is some low hanging fruit available if you know where to pick it. You will also be rewarded with a mule hunt at a steal of a price. The key is to plan, book and wait a year to go. The disadvantage for a non-Resident is the state has a quota of 5% of the licenses are all that can the Non-Resident.

The good or bad side is that you go in the drawing right next to a guy that has been applying for 20 years, you both have 0 points, so there is no problem to take a shot at it. There is a big advantage in having the outfitter put in for you, it does greatly increase your odds, because he puts it in under his Outfitters license which get an added allotment.

We have never had a hunter not draw this deer license, so it works well, knock on wood.

Except for North Dakota which is anti-non-resident deer hunting with a rifle or South Dakota where the east half of the state is non-resident deer hunting with a rifle, states when it comes to drawing and hunting.

New Mexico has about 60,000 elk but with their strict state management of this resource New Mexico can say they take the biggest bulls every year because their herd average age is 4 years older on the average. Quality, not Quantity, and the number of hunters in the field each year are limited.

Elk are managed by the state, so it is the draw or a voucher if you are not a resident. This has made New Mexico’s Elk hunts quite high. Add to this the New Mexico Indian reservations that easily bread 360 on their bulls selling voucher/licenses to the public at the highest dollar in the land. Again, an Outfitted hunt is the way to go if you are hunting New Mexico, just to be able to get to hunt.

There is also the choice for landowner vouchers or tags that allow the licenses to be used on private land usually.

New Mexico private land in Unit 51 for deer and just lately for dropped the voucher system that was basically the main stay for big game. Now on private land the vouchers are not needed, a letter that you get from the landowner and take into the NM Game and Fish allows you to buy a license for that ranch. The landowner still charges the same as he did for the voucher hunt, it just makes it so that the landowner is self-managing the elk and Antelope on his property.

Because of the competition among hunters for these great hunts at these below market discounted prices in many cases it is required that you book 1 year in advance to be able to get a particular hunt because they fill so quickly every year, many by Return Clientele that leave their deposit on the table after their hunt for a hunting slot for the following year. Once you are in 1 year, you have priority and can do the same but until then it usually means to book a year in advance to even get a slot. On the other hand, it shows the satisfaction of the hunters to rebook immediately when they leave to not get in that 1 year wait again where they started.

Application dates and deadlines are in March for Deer, Elk, Antelope, and , with hunting in September, October and November.

Then if we go to hunting the other two red meats, Oryx and Barbary Sheep or as the call them in Texas Aoudad the hunting seasons change dramatically. Free Ranging Barbary Sheep hunting takes place in February and Oryx in March, April and May. Depending if you are hunting on The White Sands Missile Range or “Off Range” on public property.

This is a last opportunity to shoot a Bull Elk on a private 5000 acres plus ranch this year the season runs from November 17 to December 31st. The ranch buts up against a large section of BLM land which also has elk but also public hunters. The private ranch you will be hunting is near Chama. The elk from Chama migrate to this ranch in the fall and winter to meet a large local herd.

When the hunters are on the BLM land the elk quickly move to this private ranch and stay there. We have all been on the other side of the fence and seen elk move onto private land and we couldn’t touch them. In this case you are the one getting the advantage of the elk movement from public to private land. In addition, there is a large local herd that stays on the ranch.

Mule Deer Hunts

At a Price than can’t be beat! Mom always said good things come to those who wait. I didn’t know what she meant until this hunt came along. Many times, we wait a year or two for preference points or using high priced vouchers. In this case we are just waiting to get in because of the high demand on an affordable Mule Deer Hunt in New Mexico which are extremely rare. Even rarer is the ability to get a license for a Mule Deer hunt in New Mexico. This has both. Book early because this only has a maximum of 4 slots per year!

There are areas in the New Mexico sand hills that have a 100% draw unbelievably because very few put in for it. Where the deer are there are no roads, so it is walking in soft sand all day, which is not for everyone. There is a lot of brush so walking in a straight line can be difficult and it is not 4-wheeler friendly.

The hunt books up a year in advance taking 130-150 bucks with an occasional 160 buck for the long walkers. The hunt itself is 100% success and has great discounts, but so much in demand and rebooking you must book with a 50% deposit 1 year in advance to get a hunt. The best part is you don’t have to buy an expensive New Mexico voucher.

Mule Deer are landowner managed on private property. This means on a private ranch you can ask the landowner for permission to hunt his property. If he agrees you can and it may include a price, get his permission and a permission letter. Take the letter to the New Mexico Game and Fish, and they will sell you a deer license that is only good on that ranch.

It has taken me some years to really find a good mule deer hunt here in NM worth providing on public land. We will now start supplying hunts in Unit 31 near Clovis NM. Over the past few years, myself and the 2 other guides have been looking over this area and can say I was impressed with amount of deer and quality seen on public land especially for New Mexico.

I would say that your average buck that you can harvest here would be in 130-150 class range with a chance at possibly bigger 160-170! We have taken out a 171 and 180 buck in past years. Better than that the odds of drawing this tag is high, so you can almost count on getting the tag in outfitter pool of course. Terrain is all sand hills so pretty much like walking on a beach all day, most of the hunting is spot and stalk and this is a walking hunt and although there is nothing real steep or mountainous do expect to cover up to 5 miles or more a day. Most times we have been out we have seen up to 8 bucks a day. If hunting Mule Deer in NM is on your list this might be the hunt for you! Taking reservations for 2019 booked and as the draw is 100% only taking 2-4 clients out each season.

Cow Elk Hunts are for Residents only. The price for a fully guided Cow elk hunt is $2000.

Bull elk sizes range 275 plus but of course how much above 300 must do with your elk hunting skills and of course luck. Traditionally December is a prime month as elk migrate on to the ranch for the winter. Herds in the 100 or so range are common during the month. The landowner was branding last week and saw a herd of 5 bulls, 3 or which were well over 300 points B&C Gross. This time of the year the cows are in large herds and the mature bulls are in smaller herds of 3-5 usually. They don’t like being with the cows and the screaming kids, so they stay with other bulls over 3.5 years old and older.

The area is a prime family owned elk ranch with bulls currently staying on it which is normal. No other Bulls have been taken off it since last year. The ranch is west of Highway 285 and Tres Piedra’s, New Mexico in the northern part of the state where the best elk hunting is found.

GMU 51: Beginning at the intersection of US 64 and the eastern boundary of the Tierra Amarilla grant, running south then west along the Tierra Amarilla grant boundary line to its intersection with the Rio Chama, then south along the Rio Chama to its intersection with the Piedra Lumbre grant boundary line, then northeast along the Piedra Lumbre grant boundary line to its intersection with US 84 northwest of Abiquiu, then southeast along US 84 to its intersection with NM 554 east of Abiquiu, then north and east along NM 554 to its intersection with NM 111, then south along NM 111 to its intersection with US 285 north of Ojo Caliente, then east and north along US 285 to its intersection with US 64 at Tres Piedras, then west along US 64 to its intersection with the Tierra Amarilla grant boundary.

And that tags or vouchers are “ranch tags.” You are guaranteed access to this ranch. Instructions for the ranch come from the owner which know the fence lines well and have supplied a specific number of elk taken each year in a NM Management program.

You can hunt any dates during this season or multiple times during this season. There are only a total of 7 vouchers so those will be the only ones hunting the property.

The hunts are all 5-day hunts. We do it in a way that you can have the benefit of the best hunting dates. As always with elk the worse the weather the better the hunting. A storm coming through gets everything moving, where blue bird weather pushes everything in cover and bedded down. The big choice to your hunt about this hunt is not only that you always have a flow of migrants coming down for the winter supplying movement.

Voucher Prices are always favored the later in December that you hunt. December is the coldest and the snowiest month to hunt but with weather to stack your odds the later the better. The biggest bulls usually migrate last but with elk you can only use the word usually because migration and elk are never certain enough to use the word always.

Antelope Hunts

Then the Antelope come into play, private land usually run about $2500 even with the voucher program for antelope deleted, the landowner still manages his antelope population with permission slips that the Outfitter buys with access to the ranch. Those allow the hunter to buy the license online from the leisure of his home computer right after the hunt is booked.

No one else does this but we do, to supply an affordable hunt that fits everyone’s budget for these great antelope. These hunts run at a 100% harvest success, and I don’t see that changing because of the landowner’s strict management of the antelope numbers on his property.

White Sands Missile Base and Private land Oryx- Hunts Please note there are two major types of Oryx. The Scimitar Oryx that is almost all white and popular in Texas, and the one we hunt free ranging in New Mexico the Gemsbok(Hems’ bok From Africa) that is a much better trophy and an extremely beautiful with its face bands like a racoon, a body of various browns, dark main and such. https://www.google.com/search?q=oryx&rlz=1C1SQJL_enUS816US816&oq=oryx&aqs=chrome..69i57j6 9i59j35i39j0l5.2671j0j8&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 So, if you look at pictures of the two Oryx you can see what the Gemsbok type Oryx in Texas is usually over $5000 in Texas and the Scimitar is about $3000. In this case you can get a free range Gemsbok for under what you would pay for the lower quality Scimitar Oryx in a Texas High fence.

Our Oryx hunts are conducted on WSMR starting on Friday afternoon and ending on Sunday. You will want to put in with us as your outfitter for highest odds of drawing this tag. These are fun hunts and our success rates have been 100% kill success. These animals are beautiful and make exceptional trophies and you don't have to go all the way to Africa to get one. These are spot and stalk hunts and success is generally higher with rifle or muzzle loader than with a bow. But whatever your goal is we will work hard to achieve it. We conduct these hunts from Oct-Feb on different Range. Oryx numbers are down, and these hunts are getting harder so practicing at longer ranges out to 400 yards will yield for better success and practice off shooting sticks in standing position. Tags have been lowered to only 45 tags a hunt so don't go home empty handed with a once in a lifetime tag.

OFF-Range Hunts We are also now guiding for off range hunts, these hunts can be tough, but we have put the work in to find good areas that produce and have been 100% on these hunts as well. Also, the draw odds are much better so if you are getting tired of not drawing a WSMR tag then let’s talk about getting you in on these hunts. We usually run these hunts Nov-Feb, as its much cooler and we can hunt most of the day. We offer 4 day packaged hunts and if for some reason we don't tag out in that time being that tag is a month long you can come back for just a day rate. These hunts are done from either Las Cruces, NM or Socorro, NM. Some outfitters brag about private land to do these hunts but honestly it’s not needed as we use to have private land and we were more successful on the public side, so we dropped the private and in return it created a more affordable hunt not having to pay a 1000.00 access fee. We prefer to run these hunts as 1x1 but can accommodate up to 2 hunters. Contact us for 2x1 pricing and options.
