Namibia has (a majority of) party-controlled papers; government-controlled and inde pendent. The reader therefore has an element of choice. Yes, one can expec't that during elections the DTA mouth piece will give the lion '5 sh~re of coverage to its own par:ty; SO too the SwaPo paper if it still exists! But it is impossible - for a newspaper ~ch as The Namibian to give what Rukoro terms 'fair coverage' to all parties contesting the election. Because of a lack of resources, lack of manpower, we cannot possibly cover each and every political rally held by each and every party. We too have to choose. We can, however, give the manifestos of the various parties cover age, and yes, we can and should engage in analysis of the above for the benefit of the electorate. - What we (as an independent newspaper) cannot and will not do is to campaign on behalf of those parties. Neither should the parties or the politicia'ns for that matter, expect to do their ~mpaigning through the newspaper. Rather they sltould reach the people dil:eetly and not expect the media to do it all for them. Rukoro also singles out papers like the New York Times, : Times of London and the Independent, as examples for Na ~ mibia!s media to emulate. The conditions and circum stances under which we operate here in Africa make this virtu8IIy impossible. We do not have the resources of those multi-million operations. Neither are even these newspa pers beyond reproach. None of the above saw Namibia's .. struggl~ for independence as worthy of much coverage, for instance. They are simply too big to care about the little people. Both those countries, in any case, have their fair share of party and multinational-controlled newspapers. Witness the case of the London Observer, a socalled left 'wing paper with. not insignificant credibility. One of its journalists, at great personal cost, recently travelled to Malawi and returned to write asca thing'article about that country, only to have her editor 'sell her out' in a cringing apology to the Malawian Government, simply because Tiny Rowland of Lonrho fame owns the newspaper and, at tlie same time, 'wants to do business with the despotic Malawi governmentt So, nO-one is perfect, let alone the press and the politicians. But we can and should strive for fair play and encourage the growth of an independent press. ------. ._. THE NAMIBIAN Friday September 18 1992 7
