W NARRATOR 20: When the bread was baked to a perfect golden brown, the Little Red Hen and her Chicks sat down.

NARRATOR 21: As they were about to enjoy their special feast, the Little Red Hen noticed all of her barnyard friends nearby. She smiled sweetly, turned to them, and said:

RED HEN: So many times I asked for help, but you were not inclined to give me your assistance, your support, or your time.

So now that the deed is done, and we have bread to eat, don’t you feel a little guilty that you didn’t help plant the wheat?

Or come to my assistance when it was time to reap or grind it? Or even knead it into dough? No, you didn’t even mind it!

NARRATOR 22: The animals hung their heads in shame. The Little Red Hen was right.

NARRATOR 23: They didn’t deserve any reward, as they didn’t do anything, right?

(Animals shyly move towards Red Hen.)

DOG: Gosh, it must have been “rough” doing all of that by yourself. I’m so sorry.

CAT: Meow! I have no excuses. Cat’s got my tongue!

DUCK: I “ducked” out every time you asked for help.

COW: The way we treated you was “udderly” disgraceful.

(Red Hen goes to each animal and places each around table.)

NARRATOR 25: After gathering them together, she made room for each and every one of them around her table, saying:

RED HEN: A lesson now you each have learned: You only get what you have earned.

And the next time that I think to ask, I hope you’ll help me do the task.

In the meantime, take a seat, And share the goodness that comes from growing wheat.

ANIMALS: The next time, you can count on us. Not one of us will make a fuss.

So here was the problem, the river was too deep, and the water ran too NARRATOR 6: fast for the Three Billy Goats Gruff to walk through it. They would be swept away!

NARRATOR 7: And, to make matters worse, there was only one bridge that went across that river, and a mean and nasty Troll lived in a hole under that bridge.

NARRATOR 8: And another problem was that the mean and nasty Troll, who lived in a hole under that bridge, always tried to reach up and grab anyone who crossed over his bridge.

NARRATOR 9: And, the biggest problem was that the mean and nasty Troll who lived in a hole under that bridge, and tried to reach up and grab anyone who crossed over his bridge, threatened to eat anyone who dared to try.

NARRATOR 10: But, worst of all, in the middle of the day, the Troll might come out from his hole under that bridge and sing .

ALL: (ad lib.) Oh, no! Say it isn’t so! Can you believe it? How terrifying!

Actually, the Troll had a pretty good voice! But back to the story … the NARRATOR 11: Three Billy Goats Gruff had had just about enough of this entire situation, W but what were they going to do?

BIG BILLY: What are we going to do? We have to come up with a plan.

MIDDLE BILLY: Yes, there must be a plan.

LITTLE BILLY: But I’m scared. It better be a pretty good plan.

NARRATOR 12: So, they put their heads and horns together and tried to come up with a pretty good, foolproof plan.

(Three Billy Goats huddle together.)

RABBIT: We’re really worried! We like to nibble on grass, too!

DEER: Oh, my dear, this really concerns me! Oh, my dear.

SQUIRREL: We all want to get to the other side of the river, where the grass is tall and lovely and green.

(Three Billy Goats break up their huddle and strut forward.)

NARRATOR 13: Finally, it looked as if the Three Billy Goats Gruff had come up with a pretty good, foolproof plan. The Little Billy Goat Gruff gingerly took a step forward.

LITTLE BILLY: (frightened, approaching the bridge, speaking loudly) Well, I’m not afraid of that mean and nasty Troll.

NARRATOR 14: Then the Little Billy Goat Gruff took a deep breath, trying to look courageous, and stepped onto the bridge, pretending that nothing would happen.

TROLL: Who’s that clip-clapping over my bridge?

W BIG BILLY: It is I, the Big Billy Goat Gruff. I’m just crossing over the bridge to get to the nice grass on the other side.

TROLL: (reaching up to grab Big Billy’s leg) Oh no, you’re not! I’m going to eat you for my dinner! And there’s no way anyone can talk me out of this one.

NARRATOR 19: All of the animals gasped, wondering what would happen next.

(They all gasp, then fidget and chat with each other.)

(yelling out) Mannequin challenge! I said: Mannequin challenge!

(All actors freeze on stage.)

Okay, audience, maybe you think you know the ending of this story.

NARRATOR 20: Most of you are probably familiar with the traditional ending, where the Big Billy Goat Gruff gets mad and stomps and tromps on that Troll.

NARRATOR 21: He charges that Troll with those huge horns and tosses that Troll into the raging river below, never to be heard from again. Cool, huh?

NARRATOR 22: But let us show you what really happened that fateful day. (snaps fingers or claps hands and cast comes alive again )

BIG BILLY: Why, I’m amazed, Mr. Troll, that you’re still here.

TROLL: What do you mean? Of course, I’m still here. This is my bridge, and I get to eat anything that crosses over it … if I want to!

BIG BILLY: Didn’t you meet the casting director that was here yesterday, looking fo r you?

TROLL: Casting director? Looking for me ?

NARRATOR 23: And with that, the Big Billy Goat Gruff pulled out a large business card, handing it to the Troll.

BIG BILLY: (hands card to Troll) Yes, I got his card in case he had any trouble finding you.

TROLL: (reading) “Trolls R Us.” Hmm, why did he want to meet me?

BIG BILLY: Because he’s casting this enormous musical movie about trolls. He heard all about you and knows that you can sing, too. Come on, get moving! You need to pack it up and get out to Hollywood as quickly as you can. There’s still time!

(Troll grabs small suitcase/carpetbag from under the bridge and runs off stage R.)

NARRATOR 24: So, the Troll packed up all of his belongings and rushed to Hollywood, where he was cast as a lead in the new Troll movie.

LITTLE BILLY: So, the Little Billy Goat Gruff, …

MIDDLE BILLY: … along with the Middle Billy Goat Gruff, …

BIG BILLY: … and the Big Billy Goat Gruff (crosses bridge to graze downstage L) …

ANIMALS: … and all of their friends (lining up near bridge, getting ready to cross over) …
