1 CATHOLIC MEDICAL ASSOCIATION Upholding the Principles of the Catholic Faith in the Science and Practice of Medicine

BOARD OF DIRECTORS October 1, 2015 President Peter T. Morrow, M.D. Dear Colleagues: President-elect The Philadelphia Guild and all of the Catholic Medical Association Guilds of Pennsylvania are honored to Lester A. Ruppersberger, D.O. host the 84th annual educational conference of the Catholic Medical Association. We warmly welcome Vice President each one of you to Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love and first Capitol of the . Marie-Alberte Boursiquot, M.D.

The theme for this year’s conference is a reflection upon the wounded culture in which we live. As Treasurer healthcare providers, we are called to our vocations by Christ to be his eyes and hands in tending to His William P. Mueller, M.D. children who are wounded, equally in body, mind and spirit. Each time we approach one of our patients, we approach the wounded Christ, and we also bring the healing Christ to them. Our conference will Secretary Maricela P. Moffitt, M.D., M.P.H. evaluate some of the wounds that our patients may encounter through the world in their bodies, minds and spirits and then present some options for a healing approach consistent with the teachings of the Assistant Secretary . Each session is preceded by a dedication to a patron saint for the theme of the session John A. Schirger, M.D. accompanied by scripture and prayer. In keeping with the tradition of all CMA conferences, we begin each day with confessions, the rosary and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. There will be an adoration chapel Immediate Past President Paul J. Braaton, M.D. available throughout the entire conference. We will have a spiritual reflection on Wednesday evening, as well as a really great Pre-Conference forum on natural family planning on Wednesday afternoon. A shine Past President tour of Philadelphia’s famous shrines will happen during the day on Wednesday. John I. Lane, M.D.

Our local and national planning committee has worked hard over the past four years in putting together Regional Director Representatives a highly distinguished faculty representing many different fields. These men and women have been David J. Hilger, M.D. Michael S. Parker M.D. selected not only for their great knowledge, but also for the courageous witness they have shown in their Craig L. Treptow, M.D. respective disciplines and ministries. As Jesus spoke to His disciples in parables, these nationally renowned speakers will share their personal stories relating to their topics. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Our culture is wounded; Christ’s body is wounded. We need healing. We are privileged to have Mario R. Dickerson, M.T.S. representative statues of the wounded, scourged Christ and the risen, healed Christ. We need your healing heads, hands and hearts to bring that healing to those who are wounded. We need more hands; we need more members. As Jesus called His disciples one by one, we need you to call ‘just one more’ member to BOARD ADVISORS join our voice and our ministry as we attempt to ‘Heal the Wounded Culture’ and ‘Bring the Wholeness of the Healing Christ to Humanity’. Episcopal Advisor Most Rev. James D. Conley, D.D.

2 3 4 PRAYER OF THE CATHOLIC PHYSICIAN

LORD JESUS,

Divine Physician, who in your earthly life showed special concern for those who suffer and entrusted to your disciples the ministry of healing, make us ever ready to alleviate the trials of our brethren. Make each one of us, aware of the great mission that is entrusted to him, strive always to be, in the performance of daily service, an instrument of your merciful love. Enlighten our minds, guide our hands, make our hearts diligent and compassionate. Ensure that in every patient we know how to discern the features of your divine Face.

YOU WHO ARE THE WAY, provide us with the gift of knowing how to imitate You every day as medical doctors not only of the body but of the whole person, helping those who are sick to tread with trust their own earthly path until the moment of their encounter with You.

YOU WHO ARE THE TRUTH, provide us with the gift of wisdom and science in order to penetrate the mystery of man and his transcendent destiny as we draw near to him in order to discover the causes of his malady and find suitable remedies for it.

YOU WHO ARE THE LIFE, provide us with the gift of preaching and bearing witness to the ‘Gospel of life’ in our profession, committing ourselves to defending it always, from conception to its natural end, and to respect the dignity of every human being, and especially the dignity of the weakest and the most in need.

Make us O Lord, Good Samaritans, ready to welcome, treat, and console those we encounter in our work. Following the example of the holy medical doctors who have preceded us, help us to offer our generous contribution to the constant renewal of health care structures.

Bless our studies and our profession; enlighten our research and our teaching. Lastly, grant to us, having constantly loved and served You in our suffering brethren, that at the end of our earthly pilgrimage we may contemplate your glorious countenance and experience the joy of the encounter with You in your Kingdom of joy and everlasting peace. Amen

JOHN PAUL II THE VATICAN, JUNE 29, 2000

5 JESUS, MY PATIENT

Dearest Lord, may I see you today and every day in the person of your sick, and, while caring for them, minister unto you.

O beloved sick, how doubly dear you are to me, when you personify Christ; and what a privilege it is to be allowed to care for you.

Sweetest Lord, make me appreciative of the dignity of my high vocation, and its many responsibilities.

Never permit me to disgrace it by giving way to coldness, unkindness or impatience.

And O God, while you are Jesus, my patient, deign also to be patient with me, bearing with my faults, looking only to my intention, which is to love and serve you in the person of each of your sick.

Lord, increase my faith, bless my efforts and work, now and forevermore. Amen

BLESSED MOTHER TERESA OF CALCUTTA

6 The 1995 Restatement of THE OATH OF HIPPOCRATES

I SWEAR in the presence of the Almighty and before my family, my teachers and my peers that according to my ability and judgment I will keep this oath and stipulation:

TO RECKON all who have taught me this art equally dear to me as my parents and in the same spirit and dedication to impart a knowledge of the art of medicine to others. I will continue with diligence to keep abreast of advances in medicine. I will treat without exception all who seek my ministrations, so long as the treatment of others is not compromised thereby, and I will seek the counsel of particularly skilled physicians where indicated for the benefit of my patient.

I WILL FOLLOW that method of treatment which according to my ability and judgment, I consider for the benefit of my patient and abstain from whatever is harmful or mischievous. I will neither prescribe nor administer a lethal dose of medicine to any patient even if asked nor counsel any such thing nor perform act or omission with direct intent deliberately to end a human life. I will maintain the utmost respect for every human life from fertilization to natural death and reject abortion that deliberately takes a unique human life.

WITH PURITY, HOLINESS, AND BENEFICENCE I will pass my life and practice my art. Except for the prudent correction of imminent danger, I will neither treat any patient nor carry out any research on any human being without the valid informed consent of the subject or the appropriate legal protector thereof, understanding that research must have as its purpose the furtherance of the health of that individual. Into whatever patient setting I enter, I will go for the benefit of the sick and will abstain from every voluntary act of mischief or corruption and also from the seduction of any patient.

WHATEVER IN CONNECTION with my professional practice or not in connection with it I may see or hear in the lives of my patients which ought not be spoken abroad I will not divulge, reckoning that all such should be kept secret.

WHILE I CONTINUE to keep this oath unviolated may it be granted to me to enjoy life and the practice of the art and science of medicine with the blessing of the Almighty and respected by my peers and society, but should I trespass and violate this Oath, may the reverse be my lot.

22 84th Annual Educational Conference of the Catholic Medical Association 2015 CONFERENCE INFORMATION

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVE

After attending this activity, a participant should be able to :

1. Understand the impact on the culture and health of the person of contraceptives, sterilization, abortion, and sexually transmitted diseases; be better able to recognize the health-related consequences on the human person, their patients in their healthcare; and become aware of healthy and authentically scientific alternative methods of diagnosis, management and treatment.

2 .Understand the impact on the culture and the family and on mental health of the person of divorce, same sex attraction, pornography and sexual addictions; be better able to diagnose and treat persons afflicted with consequences of such conditions and how it impacts their physical and emotional health; come to an awareness of how manifestations of other diseases may be related to these issues.

3. Have a better understanding of how to diagnose and treat various medical and psychological presentations of the human person within healthcare as a result of such physical, psychological and spiritual wounds and their impact on the health of the person.

4. Have a better understanding of how various clinical physical, emotional and spiritual wounds contribute to the illness of the person and the family, and ultimately, the culture.

5. Acquire a more concise clinical expertise in evaluating and treating human persons who suffer wounds created by consequences of poor choices in their lives.

CONFERENCE OVERVIEW

The conference is divided into three days of exploration of body wounds, mind wounds and spirit wounds. The mornings will predominantly focus on the woundedness. The afternoons will primarily focus on healing. Each session will be moderated by one of our Catholic medical students. Each session will cover the science and art of medicine in our modern world. Each session will attempt to outline many of the issues which affect our patients that lead to their suffering and how we, as authentically Catholic healthcare providers can recognize these ‘dis-eases’ and offer Christ’s healing through modern medical alternatives which are consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church.

The Imitation of Christ as Healer: Because Jesus has the only legitimate healing ministry, we equip Christians to heal by teaching them to imitate Christ. Jesus equipped the apostles to heal by taking them on tour with Him. They saw Him healing in many circumstances. Then Jesus sent them out with authority to heal as He healed. They simply imitated Jesus. Wednesday evening will offer reflections on woundedness and healing.

Every day begins with rosary, confessions and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. We will have a 24-hour adoration chapel during the entire conference. Each session will be opened with prayer and a scripture reference. On Saturday, we will have our annual St. Luke’s White Mass celebrated by Archbishop and the Most Reverend John J. McIntrye at the Cathedral Basilica Shrine of Saints Peter and Paul.

The Mummers The Duffy String Band bids CMA a whimsical welcome!

The root meaning of the word Mummer relates to satire, mockery, censure, and involves miming, masking and folk play. Mummers are about celebration, fun, and family. They value tradition and community. Mummers can be musical, satirical or even a little ridiculous, but they are always colorful.

Mummers in Philadelphia are costumed citizens celebrating the New Year with family and friends. They belong to clubs in one of 5 Divisions: The Comic, The Fancy, the Wench Brigade, the String Band and the Fancy Brigade Divisions. In Philadelphia this has developed into the grandest of Mummers traditions, the annual Mummers Parade. Ten thousand participants and hundreds of thousands of parade viewers take to the streets and sidewalks or view on television each New Year’s Day.

The Philadelphia Mummers Parade is the oldest continuous folk parade in the United States. The first formal, city-sponsored parade dates to 1901. But Mummery in Philadelphia began long before that. European immigrants brought their Mummer traditions with them to this area in the 17th century. Individuals, families and friends would “Mum” through the neighborhood performing a skit or a poem, sometimes making fun of the ruling class, and often asking for food or drink.

The most famous Mummers poem reads:

“Here we stand before your door, As we stood the year before; Give us whisky, give us gin, Open the door and let us in.”

Welcome to Philadelphia!

31 84th Annual Educational Conference of the Catholic Medical Association PHILADELPHIA ATTRACTIONS

The Loews Philadelphia Hotel An historic landmark and enduring symbol of Philadelphia.

Established in 1816, the Philadelphia Savings Fund Society (PSFS) was the first savings bank in the United States. From the beginning, it catered to low and moderate-income depositors with the explicit purpose of encouraging them to save and better their futures. By the end of the 1800’s, the bank was popular among recent immigrants. It was known as the “immigrants bank”, employing tellers who spoke five languages.

During the 1920’s, the Savings Fund was beginning to grow its second headquarters, an Italianate- building constructed in 1869 and located on Washington Square at Seventh and Walnut Streets. The increasing volume of banking business and growing population made it necessary to open four branch offices in Philadelphia and precipitated the need for a new headquarters.

In 1929, the bank commissioned the construction of a 36-story, 491-foot skyscraper that would be capable of producing income from rental office space as well as providing for the banking activities of the Society. James M. Wilcox, President of PSFS from 1924 to 1934 and chairman of the building committee, took an enthusiastic and active part in the design process, particularly with the tower. In the midst of the Great Depression, the building was built and equipped at an estimated cost of $8 million and was opened in stages between 1932 and 1933. The $8 million cost was an overwhelming amount during the depression. Today, the building’s materials and features would be nearly impossible to afford.

The PSFS building is considered one of the most significant buildings of the 20th century. The building revolutionized the urban landscape. The structure was the world’s second skyscraper to have central air conditioning which the public referred to as, “weather in a box”. The public was convinced that central air conditioning was harmful to their health, so for one week, the engineer spent 24 hours a day in the building to prove it was not harmful.

The architects, George Howe and William Lescaze, made certain every detail of the building was perfect. Marble, granite, and rare woods were brought from 32 different countries and used throughout the hotel’s interior. Cartier designed beautiful clocks for each floor–accenting the hotel’s dramatic aesthetic.

32 During the mid-1950’s, PSFS blanketed Philadelphia’s growing suburbs with branch offices and established itself as the city’s most venerable savings bank. In 1969 the local AIA voted it the most important building in the city in the last hundred years. By 1979 the PSFS building was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, the bank’s fortune began to change as a nationwide economic downturn and deregulation of the banking industry led to a crisis. All PSFS branches closed by 1992.

In the Year 2000, the building was renovated and reopened as the Loews Philadelphia Hotel. With the original PSFS sign still illuminated atop the 33rd floor, the building continues to be an historic landmark and recognizable symbol of Philadelphia. The 33rd floor was considered a bastion of big business and to this day maintains the original furniture and design. The hotel contains 581 luxury rooms within what remains one of the most significant and historic buildings in the country.

Welcome to the lovely and historic Loews Philadelphia Hotel set within the nation’s first skyscraper, where living history combines with warm sophistication—just like the city we call home. Enjoy your stay!

33 84th Annual Educational Conference of the Catholic Medical Association PHILADELPHIA ATTRACTIONS

Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul The Mother Church of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia

The cathedral church (Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul) is the principal church of the diocese, because it is here that the bishop as local ordinary of the diocese has his throne (chair), called the cathedra. Open since 1864 and located at the East side of Logan Square on 18th Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, the cathedral is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. It is the largest brownstone structure in Philadelphia and the largest Catholic Church in Pennsylvania. The history of the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul is central to the history of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

On the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, June 29, 1846, Bishop Kenrick initiated the building venture, during a period of strife between Roman Catholics and Protestants in Philadelphia, and issued a pastoral letter stating that the location was highly suitable for the construction of the new cathedral as the property fronted on a large public square and the ground was sufficiently spacious for the erection a building which would become the chief church of the diocese. The twenty-five year old Philadelphia architect Napoleon LeBrun was engaged and the cornerstone, a gift of Mr. James McClarnan, was laid on September 6, 1846 in the presence of some 8,000 persons.

The Cathedral was built with only very high clerestory windows to prevent vandalism. The fact that the cathedral was designed with no windows at street level is a reminder of the “Know- Nothing” riots. The original design included light-colored tinted windows only in the clerestory so that natural light could be admitted and stained glass windows in the dome, some seventy- five to one hundred feet above street level. Legend is that the architect and construction workers threw rocks and as high as they could be thrown was were the clerestory windows were placed. During the construction of the Cathedral, Bishop Kenrick, who initiated the building venture, was elevated to be the Archbishop of Baltimore in August, 1851. In leaving Philadelphia, Bishop Kenrick indicated that in spite of the honor awaiting him, an important part of his thoughts were with the unfinished Cathedral and Seminary into which he had put so much of himself. His successors Bishop Neumann and Bishop Wood continued the work. Czech-born Redemptorist Father John Nepomucene Neumann was appointed the fourth Bishop of Philadelphia. One of the first tasks to which the new Bishop, John N. Neumann, addressed himself, was the completion of the Cathedral. During the week following his installation, he sent out a pastoral

34 letter to his clergy; it included a request for them to put forth effort to aid in the completion of the Cathedral. Although Bishop Neumann was eager to have the work go forward, he was in complete accord with Bishop Kenrick’s policy of avoiding debt and of undertaking work only when the money was at hand. Unfortunately, the appeal did not succeed, for the money did not come in. Although there were many poor people in the diocese, there were also persons of wealth who could have given money, but did not.

Saint John Neumann’s successor, Bishop James Wood, a native Philadelphian entered the Catholic Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was appointed a coadjutor to Bishop Neumann in 1857, and in 1875 became the first Archbishop of Philadelphia.

In recognition of its importance and strategic location Philadelphia was raised to the rank of an archdiocese in 1875. Bishop Wood became the first Archbishop of Philadelphia. Archbishop Wood’s tenure saw the completion and dedication of the Cathedral and the building of a new seminary campus in the Overbrook section of Philadelphia. The cathedral was dedicated and solemnly blessed, Bishop Wood officiating, on November 20, 1864 at the time the Civil War was in high gear. The assistant priest on the occasion was the Very Reverend William O’Hara, V.G., who became the Bishop of Scranton. The sermon was preached by Archbishop Spaulding of Baltimore. The Cathedral was solemnly consecrated on June 30, 1890 when the mortgage was paid. The venerable edifice was completely renovated in 1914 under the direction of Archbishop Edmond F. Prendergast.

47 THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2015 Afternoon Sessions: BODY HEALING St. Raphael the Archangel, Patron Saint of Healing

Moderator: CMA-SS Medical Student

PRAYER TO ST. RAPHAEL THE ARCHANGEL

Glorious Archangel St. Raphael, great prince of the heavenly court, you are illustrious for your gifts of wisdom and grace. You are a guide of those who journey by land or sea or air, consoler of the afflicted, and refuge of sinners. I beg you, assist me in all my needs and in all the sufferings of this life, as once you helped the young Tobias on his travels. Because you are the “medicine of God” I humbly pray you to heal the many infirmities of my soul and the ills that afflict my body. I especially ask of you the favor (here mention your special intention), and the great grace of purity to prepare me to be the temple of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

SCRIPTURE Matthew 19:2

Large crowds followed Him and He healed them.

REFLECTION

An amazing thing about Jesus’ healing ministry is that in the Gospels we never see Him pray- ing for the sick. In James 5:14, we are called to pray for the sick, but we have no record of Jesus ever praying for the sick. He almost always healed by giving a command. The statement of the centurion is the essence of Jesus’ healing ministry:” I am not worthy to have You under my roof. Just give an order and my boy will get better” (see Mt 8:8). Jesus heals by giving “doctor’s or- ders” (see Mk 2:17). He heals by being Lord. Jesus is Lord first and foremost, and He is Healer, Teacher, Prophet, Pastor, etc. only insofar as it manifests His lordship. Jesus was unique “because He taught with authority, and not like the scribes” (Mk 1:22). Jesus usually commanded the sick person to do something. At other times He commanded the devil to leave. He even ordered a fever to leave Simon’s mother-in-law (Lk 4:39).

53 FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2015 Morning Sessions: MIND WOUNDS St. Dymphna, Patron saint of those suffering from nervous and mental afflictions

Moderator: CMA-SS Medical Student

PRAYER TO ST. DYMPHNA

Good Saint Dymphna, great wonder-worker in every affliction of mind and body, I humbly im- plore your powerful intercession with Jesus through Mary, the Health of the Sick, in my present need. (Mention it.) Saint Dymphna, martyr of purity, patroness of those who suffer with nervous and mental afflictions, beloved child of Jesus and Mary, pray to Them for me and obtain my request. Saint Dymphna, Virgin and Martyr, pray for us. Amen.

SCRIPTURE Romans 12:2

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

REFLECTION

Jesus was able to heal by exercising His authority because He knew whom to command and what to command. He knew when the sick person needed a deeper faith in Him and how to help the sick person grow in faith. He knew whether unforgiveness or other sins were the causes of the sickness and whether the devil was involved in the sickness. Jesus rose early every morning to listen to His Father (Mk 1:35), and He prayed into the night on many occasions (Lk 22:39). Jesus did not pray for healing but before healing. He did nothing and said nothing except what the Father told Him (Jn 5:19; 8:28). Jesus gave us authority over all demons and every disease (Mt 10:1), but we can’t be in authority unless we are under authority to our heavenly Father. This implies that we take time to hear Him and then obey Him and give commands for healing. We need to open every ‘healing’ day with prayer and thanksgiving.

63 FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2015 Afternoon Sessions: MIND HEALING St. Rita Cascia

Moderator: CMA-SS Medical Student

PRAYER TO ST. RITA

O holy protectress of those who are in utmost need, shining as a star of hope in the midst of dark- ness, in patience and fortitude as the patriarch Job, scourge of devils, health of the sick, deliverer of those in extreme need, admiration of saints and model of all states! With confident trust, and firmly united to the adorable will of my God, through the merits of my only Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and in particular of that painful crown of thorns which with a tender devotion thou didst daily contemplate; through the merits of the most sweet Virgin Mary and thine own excellent graces and virtues, I implore thee with my whole heart and soul, to obtain my earnest petition, provided it be for the greater glory of God and my salvation. Amen.

SCRIPTURE 1 John:9

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

REFLECTION

Although God made it simple to see the extent of our healing gift, we complicate matters by pride, self-hatred, and confusion. In some groups, a healing ministry is well-respected, and some will wrongly seek it because of pride. Others have the mistaken idea that they need to be worthy and thereby automatically disqualify themselves from using any of God’s gifts, including healing. Still others say the Lord chooses the healed to be the healers (2 Cor 1:4). There is some truth to this, but the main way to tell if we have a special gift of healing is simply to observe over a period of time if people are healed.

68 SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2015 Sessions I–II: SPIRITUAL WOUNDS AND HEALING Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows

Moderator: CMA-SS Medical Student

PRAYER TO OUR LADY OF SORROWS (by St. Bridget)

O Blessed Virgin Mary, Immaculate Mother of God, who didst endure a martyrdom of love and grief, beholding the sufferings and sorrows of Jesus! Thou didst co-operate in the benefit of my re- demption by thy innumerable afflictions and by offering to the Eternal Father His only-begotten Son as a holocaust and victim of propitiation for my sins. I thank thee for the unspeakable love which led thee to deprive thyself of the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus, true God and true Man, to save me, a sinner. Oh! make use of the unfailing intercession of thy sorrows with the Father and the Son, that I may steadfastly amend my life and never again crucify my loving Redeemer by new sins; arid that, persevering till death in His grace, I may obtain eternal life through the merits of His Cross and Passion. Amen. Mother of love, of sorrow, and of mercy, pray for us

SCRIPTURE Proverbs 18:14

The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?

REFLECTION

Because the Lord loves us so much, He usually doesn’t want only to heal us, but also to do several other things for us. Therefore, healing is usually part of a “package” including such other things as conversion, forgiveness, repentance, evangelization, vocation, ministry, or more. The Lord may give us a whole series of commands that touch many areas of our lives. All of these areas are inter- twined with our healing. Consequently, to accept healing, there are usually several areas in which we must obey the Lord. If we have persisted in rebellion and sin in these areas of our lives—even to the point of blinding ourselves to God’s will, then obedience becomes difficult. For this reason we may wish that the Lord hadn’t mixed healing in with so many other things. We find the Lord “too much for us” (see Mk 6:3), but we can accept God’s grace to be healed of spiritual blindness.

71 SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2015 Sessions III–V: SPIRITUAL HEALING St. Luke the Apostle, Patron of Physicians

Moderator: CMA-SS Medical Student

PRAYER TO ST. LUKE THE APOSTLE, FOR PHYSICIANS

Most charming and saintly Physician, you were animated by the heavenly Spirit of love. In faith- fully detailing the humanity of Jesus, you also showed his divinity and his genuine compassion for all human beings. Inspire our physicians with your professionalism and with the divine com- passion for their patients. Enable them to cure the ills of both body and spirit that afflict so many in our day. Amen

SCRIPTURE Luke 4:18

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor. He hath sent me to heal the broken hearted.

REFLECTION St. Padre Pio

You should feel at home with sufferings that it pleases Jesus to send you, since you always have to live with them. Acting thus you think less of being freed from them. Jesus who cannot suffer long to keep you in affliction will come to relieve and comfort you by infusing fresh courage into your soul.

Providence Health & Services

Since the first disciples healed a paralyzed man St. Joseph Health “in the name of Jesus Christ,” (Acts 3:1-10), Christians have followed the model and Call of Saint Agnes Medical Center, Fresno Jesus to care for the sick, the poor, and the Scripps Mercy Medical Centers, vulnerable. Throughout history, the Call has San Diego and Chula Vista remained the same, while the methods and means of care have adjusted in response to the needs and signs of the times. In the United States, the Call has taken the form of a large institutional ministry presence.

Catholic health care providers have been witnessing their commitment to Jesus' Call by serving California communities for over 150 years. Today, three Catholic health care systems, and three independent hospitals operate 48 Catholic and community- based hospitals throughout California. They are committed to providing high quality, low cost care to their patients and improving the overall health and well- being of their communities. Catholic health care providers comprise over 14 percent of California’s hospitals.

The Alliance of Catholic Health Care strengthens the Catholic health care ministry in California by providing a statewide forum through which ministry leaders collaborate on advocacy, ministry leadership formation, the advancement of religious freedom, Church relations and other issues that enhance the common good of the patients and communities they serve.
