Managers can help employees stay healthy

Besides helping new employees get settled in a job, managers — if given an incentive — can also help them achieve wellness goals, suggests new research. Tying just 10% of managers’ salary increases to their employee wellness eff orts, could have a big payoff in terms of creating a culture of health at the workplace, and could tip the scales toward healthier employees, the study said. While workplace wellness initiatives are common, few have had substantial success in getting individual employees to make healthy changes. “Instead of focusing on individual wellness outcomes, we propose that it would be more eff ective if managers were incentivised to create healthier overall work environments with simple, easy to implement actions such as installing a water cooler, providing healthy snacks at meetings, and encouraging work/life balance,” said lead author Rebecca Robbins from Food and Brand Lab, Cornell University, New York. The study surveyed 270 adults with manager roles and found that 68% supported the idea of being evaluated by their employee wellness actions. “Leadership support is essential in any workplace change, including wellness. Most employee wellness initiatives don’t utilise the power of manager leadership — this strategy is unique in that it really taps into the manager’s ability to lead their team to wellness,” study co-author Brian Wansink, director, Cornell Food and Brand Lab, noted. The fi ndings appeared in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology. — IANS Loss of sleep during adolescence may cause health issues in future

Slow-wave sleep deprivation in teenaged boys predicts whether they are at risk for insulin resistance and other health issues, a neuroscience researcher has said. “Boys who experience a greater decline in slow- wave sleep as adolescents have a signifi cantly higher chance of developing insulin resistance than those who more closely maintained their slow-wave sleep as they got older,” according to Jordan Gaines, a neuroscience researcher from the Pennsylvania State University. “These boys are then also at greater risk for developing type 2 diabetes, increased visceral fat and impaired attention,” Gaines explained at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Slow-wave sleep (SWS) is an important stage of sleep that is involved in memory consolidation and recovery after sleep deprivation, and is also associated with reduced cortisol and infl ammation. Gaines analysed results collected through the Penn State Child Cohort in order to study long-term eff ects of SWS loss from childhood to adolescence. The cohort included 700 children from the general central Pennsylvania population, ages fi ve to 12. Eight years later, 421 participants were followed up during adolescence — 53.9% were male. Gaines found that in boys, a greater loss of SWS between childhood and adolescence was signifi cantly associated with insulin resistance, and this loss was marginally associated with increased belly fat and impaired attention. However, Gaines did not fi nd any associations between SWS and insulin resistance, physical health or brain function in girls. — IANS Raising kids can radically rewire your immune system, says study

You have to be responsible, and I had opportunities. I was starting to do well at building homes and things like that. That interested me a lot as well.
