Program Summary: This three-week workshop in Portuguese linguistics is located in Curitiba, capital of the Brazilian state of Paraná. Your knowledge of Spanish will allow you to acquire Portuguese quickly. Live the language and culture for three weeks and come home speaking Portuguese!

Key Program Features: • 4 graduate semester credits • A two-week, intensive language course will be followed by a one-week seminar in Spanish Portuguese contrasts. • Homestay (including breakfast and dinner) with Braziian family included in cost of the program • Excursions to Curitiba, Morretes, Ilha do Mel, and Honey Island • Cultural activities, including cooking workshops and dancing classes

Program Cost: $2750, which includes four (semester) hours of OSU graduate tuition; room and partial board, some excursions and course materials; supplemental travel health insurance; and airport pickup and drop-off at the international airport in Curitiba.

2 University of Florida in Rio: Language and Culture FLAS Eligible

Program Description: This 6-week intensive program is aimed at intermediate and advanced students of Portuguese as well as FLAS recipients at the graduate and undergraduate level. Students must have had at least two semesters of Portuguese or the equivalent to be considered for admission. The program consists of language classes in the morning, followed by classes and workshops on Brazilian culture and excursions in the afternoon.

Language: POR 3243, POR 4956 are the intermediate and advanced classes offered in Portuguese at IBEU (Instituto Brasil-Estados Unidos), with Brazilian instructors trained in teaching Portuguese as a foreign language. POR 3502 Culture: The Body in Brazil: As a means for understanding abstract concepts across cultural boundaries, the body offers a metaphor for diverse and socially relevant understandings of biopolitics and Brazilian culture. Working with practices established by Catalytic Communities and Theresa Williamson, this course also brings together cultural concepts and with issues of urban planning, sustainability and social justice. Cost: $7179 fee for undergraduates; $7427 for graduates—which includes homestay, excursions, tuition and books. Airfare is not included.

This program is FLAS eligible. It has 140 contact hours of in-classroom instruction for all levels: 105 hours of language instruction by Brazilian instructors (3 hours every morning for six weeks) plus 35 hours for the culture course taught by University of Florida faculty (~6 hours for six weeks) provide a total of 140 hours of intensive language training, plus homestay and excursions for all students.

3 Intensive Portuguese Language at the UNISUL FLAS Eligible Program Dates: June 12th – August 1st Program Location: Florianópolis, Brazil Program Description: This 7-week program takes place in Florianópolis, the island capital of the state of Santa Catarina. With over 40 beaches, the island boasts great natural beauty and is known for the friendliness of its people. All courses will be taught at the Universidade do Sul de Santa Catarina (UNISUL), a private university founded in 1964 and recognized by the Brazilian Ministry of Education. ISA students will attend courses at UNISUL’s Ilha Centro location in the central downtown area of the island. During the Intensive Portuguese Language program, students at all levels of Portuguese language proficiency obtain intensive training in Portuguese. Beginning and intermediate students complete 144 hours of Portuguese-language coursework, while advanced students complete 126 hours of Portuguese-language coursework. Course material focuses on grammar, conversation, written expression and culture. All courses are instructed in Portuguese and are evaluated on Portuguese language acquisition. Classroom learning is complemented by a variety of cultural activities, which may include language exchanges with local Brazilian students, a Brazilian Dance Workshop, screenings of Brazilian films, and more. An island tour plus excursions to Balneário Camboriú and Blumeneau & the Itajai River Valley are also included among the program’s activities. Students may choose to live with a local host family or in an apartment. Application & Deadline: The application process consists of: the ISA online application, a Credit Verification page signed by a university contact, submission of official transcripts, and a $95 non-refundable application deposit. Application deadline is April 25, 2020. Note that the fellowship application and the ISA program applications are separate. Cost: $5,650 includes tuition, cultural activities and excursions, medical insurance, airport reception, use of the ISA on-site office, Bridging Cultures Program, and on-site support from full-time resident staff. Housing in a homestay is also included in the program price with breakfast and dinner provided daily. Double and single apartments are also available for an additional fee, and meals are not included in the apartment option. The Department of Education guidelines state that FLAS-eligible intensive language programs should be a minimum of six weeks. IFLE requires 140 contact hours, or in- classroom instruction, for beginner and intermediate level instruction, while 120 hours are required at the advanced level. This special eight-week course is designed for people wishing to study beginning Brazilian Portuguese. SIPI 2020 will take place June 15th through August 7th, 2020. Enrollment is open to advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty and other researchers from any institution and will be useful to those who need to develop communication skills and reading knowledge for research. Enrollment is limited to 18 students.

The Institute will take place at the University of Wisconsin-Madison during the eight-week summer session, June 15-August 7, 2020. Instruction is five days a week, four hours a day and the courses (listed as Portuguese 301-302) carries 8 credits. Knowledge of Spanish or another Romance language is required (2-3 years equivalency).

The Summer Intensive Portuguese Institute is sponsored by the Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian Studies Program (LACIS) – a Title VI National Resources Center- and the Department of Spanish & Portuguese at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
