The electrical power outages experienced in some parts of cam- pus this summer have been caused by various construction projects. “The outages are necessary to complete the permanent power connections and to improve the electrical metering capabilities on campus,” said Carol Strode, assis- tant director of the physical plant. The renovation of Booth Library and the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union food court are two projects that will cause power outages to significant portions of the campus when new transformers are connected to the electrical sys- tem. “The outages are planned for the times at which the least amount of people will be affected,” she said. “If the power is to be out for an extended period of time, they (fac- ulty and students) may want to power down their computers and any electronic equipment prior to the power going off.” The outages are being con- trolled. “It is a controlled process,” Strode said. “The work is per- formed by the electricians.
