Message from your Borough Councillor

The Autumn season has arrived. The trees are starting to change col- our and the Virginia Creeper is starting to go red. The Government is heavily involved in solving the Brexit issues. The conversion of almost 40 years worth of European laws to UK statute is a very big task. In the May addition of the Crier, I advised you the Local Government Boundary Commission have decided to undertake an electoral review of the Borough Council. The initial submissions included two recommendations. Firstly that the size of the council be reduced to 54 Councillors for the Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk. Sec- ondly, that the preference would be for single member wards, but for larger areas 2 member wards, and only in exceptional circumstances should a 3 member ward be agreed. The next stage has just be agreed by the Borough Council and submitted to the Boundary Commission. It recommends that Parish Council boundaries are used as the building blocks for the proposed wards in the parished areas of the Borough and in the unparished areas (King’s Lynn) every attempt will be made to build on natural communities. The estimated total number of electors for the ‘target year’, 2022 has been agreed with the Commission (based on advice from the local plan team) at 128,142. This results in a target number of 2,373 electors per Councillor. The impact of these recommendations means several significant changes to the current Bor- ough Wards. The current Walpole Ward which includes the parishes of The Walpoles (Walpole St Peter, Walpole St. Andrew and Walpole Marsh) and , has approximately 1992 electors. The Borough Councils recommendation to the Commission that affect the Walpoles are as follows: Firstly Walpole Cross keys will become part of a ward which includes Terrington St Clements, Terrington St. John and Walpole Cross keys. This will be a single member ward. Secondly the parish of the Walpoles will become part of a larger ward which includes Wal- soken, , and the Walpoles. This will be a two member ward. The estimated number of electors in this new ward will be 4851 covered by two members, which is just above the recommended number per 2373 per council member. The initial phase of consultation closed on 4th September 2017. The Commission will consider all submissions received and publish draft recommendations for new electoral arrangements in October 2017. Public consultation on the draft recommendation will take place between October 2017 and January 2018. The Commission will consider representations and suggestions; evidence re- ceived and publish formal recommendations in April 2018. New electoral arrangements for the Borough would then come into effect at the Borough Council election in 2019. Finally, following my update of the collection of food waste in my last Crier article, I have had several queries re the bins. So please use the following web link to understand more about what goes in each bin. https://www.west-norfolk.gov.uk/info/20140/ what_goes_in_each_bin

I appreciate all the local support and if you think I can help do not hesitate to contact me. Cllr Richard Blunt Email: [email protected] Telephone: 01945 780454

Mackerel Dinner for 2 2 Mackerel fillets Dusting of flour salt and pepper knob of butter small pack of pre-cooked beetroot 1 desert spoon red wine vinegar splash of red wine water

1 apple cored peeled and cut into eight pieces knob of butter potatoes peeled and chopped for boiling 1 clove garlic knob of butter 1 or 2 desert spoon cream splash of milk Big spoon of mayonnaise chopped chives or herb of your choice

1. Put potatoes in salted water to boil. 2. Carefully pin-bone the mackerel fillets with tweezers. Turn fillets so skin is upper- most. Make 3 or 4 diagonal slits across the skin. Dust skin side lightly with flour and sprinkle with salt and pepper. 3. Put beetroot in very small saucepan with wine vinegar and wine and top up with water just to cover. Bring to boil and simmer for 10 mins. Turn off and leave in pan. 4. Fry apple in butter till golden. 5. Drain potatoes. Chop garlic and fry in a knob of butter till soft but not brown. Add potatoes cream and generous splash of milk, bring to boil stir until thick then remove from heat, roughly mash with a fork so still a bit lumpy and add mayonnaise and chives or herbs. 6. Cook the mackerel by frying in butter, on a medium heat (7) for 3 minutes on each side. Fry skin side down first. 7. Serve by placing cooked fillets on warmed plates, add potato mix, cooked apples and chopped beetroot removed from liquid.

Hope you enjoy the recipe. By the way if you don’t already know about it, fresh fish is now available in the Walpoles one day a week outside Samuels farm shop. At the moment it’s open on Saturday mornings, but they are thinking of changing the day and maybe doing home deliv- eries, so if you like to buy fresh fish, you will be able to find out more from Samuels.

Enjoy! Liz de Boer

NEWS FROM ANTHONY CURTON PRIMARY- SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP

Well, for the first time in its history, the school now cares and educates over 200 children – a direct impact we feel, of being recognised both locally and further afield, as a ‘Good School’. Tilney All Saints, have also rapidly in- creased, from 43 children four and a half years ago when we became part- ners, to 87 children currently on roll. The partnership between the two schools continues to go from strength to strength.

Welcome – a huge welcome to all our new children, in both schools – who have made an excellent start, despite this being such a huge experience for them. We hope both they and their families are very happy with us.

Congratulations – To Mrs Pharro, from the Anthony Curton site, who had a baby boy in July. Congratulations also to Mrs Whistler, on the Tilney site, who is expecting her first baby in the New Year.

Good Luck – to all the children who left us at the end of July, to go to their High Schools. We hope that now the nerves and the excitement have settled a bit, you are all happy in your new schools and looking forward to your first year.

Harvest Festival

You are all welcome to join us at our Harvest Festival Service this year, which is planned to take place at Walpole St. Peter’s Church on Friday Octo- ber 20th, at 10.00am. It is a lovely service, and we would love members of the Community to join us.

Have Fun – Our Year 6 children from both schools will soon be leaving for their 3 day residential visit to the Outdoor activity centre at Hilltop, near Sher- ringham. We’ll let you know how they get on with the hours spent outside, the lovely food and the secret bedtime discussions!

Until then – enjoy the Autumn.

Best Wishes Anne Senior Executive Head Teacher

Notes from Walpole St. Peter’s Church FROM THE CHURCH WINDOW - OCTOBER 2017

November is a month of two very contrasting days. On 5th November we have Guy Fawkes Night, when we all ‘Remember, Remember, the Fifth of November, Gun- powder, Treason and Plot’, and we celebrate the defeat of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. These days it is less a day of celebration and more of a season, with fireworks seeming to go off for weeks during the autumn. Yet even this celebration reminds us of those who gave their lives for their Christian faith. Catherine Wheels, for example, are named for St Catherine, who was martyred on an instrument of torture called the breaking wheel. Roman Candles are named for the Christians martyred in the Roman arena by being burned at the stake. Just a week later on 12th November, we come to Remembrance Sunday, a day of quiet respect and memory, when we honour the dead lost in two world wars and the many other conflicts in which our armed services have fought. We cannot meet Re- membrance Sunday with the jollity with which we celebrate Guy Fawkes Night, yet nonetheless we should not be ashamed to remember those we have lost in war. By doing so we are not being warlike or promoting conflict, but rather we can ask that the peace in which they now rest may be a peace to calm our fears for the future of our world, and we can ask God to help us bring justice to all peoples and harmony between all countries. Let us pray for that peace and harmony, so that the future may indeed be one where we celebrate the whole world’s freedom and reconciliation, just as we celebrate our democratic freedoms on 5th November.
