SMUSA Staff Celebration and Convocation 2020 5 Twenty-Five Year Staff Inductees Monica G. Cordero

Monica G. Cordero is the Assistant Registrar of Curriculum Support in the Registrar’s Office. She began her career at SMU as a Microfilm Manager and was promoted to Information System Specialist where she worked on queries and statistical reports for the university. She then moved to Business Systems Analyst in Academic Advisement, later becoming the lead for Academic Advisement. In 2007, she was promoted to Manager of Academic Curriculum Support. In 2015, she was promoted to her current position as the Assistant Registrar for Curriculum Support. Monica began as an SMU student with a work-study program in the Registrar’s Office. She graduated in 1996 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Management Science. Monica grew up in and graduated High School as valedictorian. She taught English to adults with the DISD and the Big Thoughts program and continues to do so through volunteer work with her church. She enjoys spending time with her family and volunteering with her church.

Duane Harbin

Duane Harbin is the Assistant Dean for Technology, Planning, and Compliance at Perkins School of Theology. He was the Associate Director of Bridwell Library from 1995–2001, the Assistant Dean for Instructional Technology and Institutional Research at Perkins from 2001–2015 and has been in his current role since 2016. Before joining SMU, Duane was the Information Services Librarian for Yale Divinity School. He grew up in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Western Springs, Illinois, and Englewood, Colorado where he attended Cherry Creek High School. In 1977 he graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Linguistics, in 1981 from Yale University Divinity School with a Master’s Degree in Divinity, and in 1989 from Southern Connecticut State University with a Master’s Degree in Library Science. He was awarded the SMU Faculty Senate Award for Outstanding Service for 2004–2005 and served on the American Theological Library Association Board of Directors from 2004–2010, Vice President 2005, and President 2006. Duane enjoys classic American cars (especially Ford Thunderbirds) and Pembroke Welsh Corgis.

Abby Kinney is the IT Category Manager in Business and Finance, Purchasing. She began working with SMU in 1995 as a Desktop Support Consultant with Project Pegasus, which was an effort to equip all faculty and staff with desktop computers. She became a Manager of ITS User Services in 2000 and then Director of Support Services in 2002. In 2015, Abby moved to Purchasing where she continues to work presently. Before SMU, Abby worked with a regional investment securities firm as an analyst, then transitioned to helping with their computers. She moved on to manage a team that supported all technology for their main office and forty-two branch offices. Abby grew up in Dallas and graduated from Lake Highlands High School. She graduated from SMU in 1986 with a Bachelor of Business Administration and from the University of at Dallas in 1996 with a Master of Science in Management and Administrative Sciences. She was a Member of the Staff Association Executive Board from 2008–2010 and was one of the founding members of the Staff Association Mustang Partners. In her free time, she enjoys needlework, genealogy, music, and spending time with her fur-babies, Henry, Sis, Oliver, Cooper, Lou-Lou, and Peggy.

Julie Maynard

Julie is the Executive Assistant for the Provost and the Faculty Senate. She was hired as a part-time staff member by Marsh Terry for his Senate term from 1993–1994 and became a full-time staff member in 1995. She has since had a total of twenty–six bosses! Before SMU, she was a stay-at-home mom to her daughter and son, and ran her own business, “Out of the Attic Real Estate Sales”, which she has continued through the years. Julie grew up in Dallas. She attended J.F. Kimball High School and Abilene Christian University where she majored in Drama and minored in History. Julie took Charlie Smith’s Creative Writing Course at SMU at Taos in 1996. She received the Outstanding Staff Award in 2007. She enjoys time with her spouse Steve Farr and children Adrienne Maynard Morton and Cameron Davis Maynard. She is the proud grandmother of eighteen-month-old James Ford Morton. In her spare time, Julie enjoys ethnic antiquities, tribal textiles, and jewelry. She attends antique shows across the country and has completed estate sales as far away as Long Beach, New Jersey.

Beth Minton is the Department Coordinator and Assistant to the Chair in the Department of Computer Science. Beth began her career at SMU as the Administrative Assistant in the Computer Science and Engineering Department, School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS). Before joining SMU, Beth worked as a temp in a bank. She grew up in South Texas and attended Gonzales High School, later graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from SMU in 1971. She has received the Engineering Staff Favorite Award. She always knew she would attend SMU as a student and has grown to love the school even more since becoming a staff member. Beth is married to Gary Minton and has two children, Lowry Minton Manders and Jake Minton. In her spare time, she enjoys knitting, cooking, and hosting parties with her husband.

Marc Peterson

Marc Peterson is the Director of Financial Aid for the Financial Aid Department. He began his career at SMU in the Athletic Department as the Associate Athletic Director of External Affairs. In 1999, he moved to the newly formed Division of Enrollment Services as the Director of Planning. In 2004, he was promoted to serve in his current role as the Director of Financial Aid. In 2010, he received an Honorary Lettermen’s Award from the SMU Letterman’s Association. Before joining SMU, Marc co-owned a computer equipment company in Dallas. Marc’s father was a career Army Officer which allowed him to grow up and experience many places around the globe including Germany, France, Northern Virginia, New Jersey, and Galesburg, IL where he attended high school. Marc attended SMU where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. He then completed the Air Force ROTC program at SMU and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. He went on to attended Penn State University to receive a Master of Science in Mineral Economics. He is married to Jan Peterson and has one child named Nancy, both SMU alumnae and former staff members at SMU. Marc’s family enjoys traveling and SMU college sports.

Maria C. Richards is the Geothermal Laboratory Coordinator for the Huffington Department of Earth Sciences. Maria began her career at SMU after a chance meeting at a game where she met Dr. Dave Blackwell. He hired Maria and lead her as she grew from a part-time data entry and mapping position to a full- time staff position. Through opportunities at SMU, Maria met many in the international geothermal industry. Her connections allowed her to expand the Geothermal Lab research grants, add conferences, provide outreach, build a national geothermal data system, travel to geothermal sites around the world, and eventually become the President of the Geothermal Resources Council. Maria received the SMU Leadership in Sustainability Award and is the President of For the Love of the Lake. She grew up in southern Michigan and attended Adrian High School. She later attended Michigan State University, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Geography and the University of Tennessee where she received a Master of Science in Physical Geography. Maria is married to Ian Richards and enjoys bike riding.

Katy R. Scott

Katy Scott is the Director of Project Management in Marketing and Communications for Development and External Affairs. Katy began her career at SMU in 1994 as a temporary staff member, working as the Information Systems Secretary in the Department of News and Information. She has since that time worked in a variety of roles within the Office of Public Affairs, which is now called Marketing and Communications. Before her current role, she held the titles of Web Production Designer, E-Marketing Designer, Associate Director of E-Marketing, and Associate Director of Project Management. Before SMU, Katy was a recent college graduate and a manager of an ice cream store. She grew up in Plano and attended Plano East Senior High School. Katy received a Bachelor of Art in Psychology and Fine Art from Austin College and a Certificate in Project Management from SMU. She is married to Doc Scott and has an eleven-year-old named Jamieson. She enjoys cooking, meal planning and grocery shopping, writing and editing, painting, yoga, the Oxford comma, and making people laugh.

SMUSA Staff Celebration and Convocation 2020 9 Melinda (Mindy) Jane Rowland-Hess

Mindy Hess worked in Electrical Engineering from 1995–1996, the Marketing Department in Development and External Affairs from 1996–1999, and as the Associate Director of Alumni Relations and Engagement in Development and External Affairs from 1999–the present. Before working at SMU, she worked as a Geophysical Technician for Maxus Oil Company for twelve years. She grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma and attended Will Rogers High School. She then graduated with an Associate Degree from Eastland College in 1994, followed by a Bachelor of Humanities Degree from SMU in 1998. Mindy is married to Steve Hess and has two children, Andrea Shackleford (SMU alumna 2007) and Adam Chumley. Her lifelong passions include interior design, water fitness (which she taught at the Dedman Life Sports Center for three years), photography, cooking, and searching for treasures at real estate sales.

Lisa Seifert

Lisa Seifert is the Head Coach for SMU’s Mustang team, an NCAA Division I women’s volleyball team. She has 400 career wins and has led the program to victory for twenty-five years, since its first season in 1996. She led the program to its first conference championship title in 2015, posting a record of 27–6, setting a record for most wins in a season and then went on to win the conference championship for a second time in a row in 2016. Lisa and her team have won multiple awards over the years. In addition to coaching, Lisa serves as the chair for the D1 Midwest Region Awards responsible for the AVCA All-Region and All-American selections. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Physical Education in 1983 from Winona State University in Minnesota, where she played volleyball and . She then completed a Master of Physical Education from Wisconsin-La Crosse in 1987. Lisa has coached her athletes to victory on the court and in the classroom, where eighty student- athletes have been awarded Academic All-Conference Honors.

SMUSA Staff Celebration and Convocation 2020 10 Stephen P. Snider

Stephen P. Snider is a Course Management and eLearning Solutions Specialist who works in the Office of Information Technology. Before working with SMU, he administered an Octel voicemail system at a small call-center and provided training and administration for the system. Steve has been a key component in the development of academic technology services at SMU since 1995. He started his career managing the newly created Digital Commons, a former collaborative space where faculty learned and experimented with new technologies (similar to Makerspace) under the Norwick Center for Media and Instructional Technology (CMIT). Over the last twenty-five years he has worked with faculty and students to help with the use of online academic solutions. Steve specializes in Blackboard, Canvas, Turnitin, ExamSoft, and EvaluationKIT.

M. Alyce Tanner

Alyce Tanner is the Director of Police Technology for the SMU Police Department. She began her career as a part- time police dispatcher in 1994 and became a full-time staff member six months later. She worked with the PeopleSoft Training Team in 1999 to prepare staff at SMU for the switch from the old mainframe software to the Windows based PeopleSoft, which is now my.smu.edu. In 2005, she returned to the Police Department as the Assistant Director of Communications and IT Support to oversee the operations of the Communications Center and to provide technology support to the Police Department. In February of this year, she was promoted to Director of Police Technology. Alyce was a student at UNT before she began work with SMU. She first attended Grapevine Highschool and then pursued degrees at the University of North Texas and SMU, where she is currently is working towards a degree in Corporate Communications and Public Affairs with a second major in Markets and Culture. She is married to Darrin Tanner.

R. Gerald Turner has been the President of Southern Methodist University since 1995. President Turner has served on the boards of the American Council on Education and the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, and he co-chaired the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics for nearly ten years. In Texas, he serves on the boards of the Methodist Health System Foundation, the Salvation Army of Dallas, the AT&T Performing Arts Center and two publicly traded companies. Before joining SMU, President Turner was the chancellor of the University of Mississippi. He previously served in administrative positions at the University of Oklahoma and Pepperdine University. A native of New Boston, Texas, he earned an Associate of Arts Degree from Lubbock Christian University, a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Abilene Christian University and a Master of Arts and PhD in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. He and his wife, Gail, have two married daughters and five grandchildren.

President’s Award Winner 2020 Gretchen C. Voight New Employee Excellence Dustin Grabsch

Dustin has been the Director of Academic Initiatives for Residence Life and Student Housing since 2019. Before working with SMU, Dustin worked as the Assistant Director of Academic Support Initiatives at Texas A&M University. He grew up in Warren, Michigan and attended Kingwood High School. Dustin earned a Bachelor of Science in Leadership Studies, a Master of Arts in Student Development Administration, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Organization and Community Leadership from Texas A&M University. Dustin is a proud first-generation college student. In his spare time, he enjoys boating, hiking, DIY projects, and writing.

SMUSA Staff Celebration and Convocation 2020 12 President’s Award Winner 2020 Continuing Excellence Allison Day

Allison is the Director of Space Management in the Office of Facilities Planning and Management. She joined SMU in 2007 as the Assistant Director of Operations at the Hegi Career Center, then began work as the Assistant Director of Facilities for Residence Life and Student Housing in 2012. In 2015 she was promoted to Director of Student Affairs Facilities, reporting to the Vice President of Student Affairs. In 2018 she accepted her current role, working to create, manage, and sustain space utilization processes campus wide. Before working at SMU, Allison spent ten years working with Marriott as an Assistant General Manager. She grew up in Grapevine, TX and attended . She attended Texas A&M where she earned a Bachelor of Art in English, followed by SMU where she earned a Master of Liberal Studies. She is married to Joshua Day and has two children, Sidney and Hazel. Allison spends her spare time crocheting, reading, spending time outside with her family, and spoiling her three dogs Molly, Henry, and Xavier. President’s Award Winner 2020 Innovation Rob Kalescky

Rob is an HPC Applications Scientist working in OIT Research and Data Sciences Services. He began as a post- doctoral fellow, working with Dr. Thomas Hagstrom and the Center for Research Computing, and subsequently OIT Research and Data Sciences Services to support and advance the usage of high-performance computing across the university. Before his time at SMU, Rob worked as a doctoral graduate student working with Dr. Elfi Kraka of the Department of Chemistry. Rob grew up in Cardiff by the Sea, California and Dallas, TX where he attended Highland Park High School. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering with a Minor in Mathematics and Chemistry from Texas Tech University, followed by a Master of Science in Chemistry from the University of Texas at Dallas, and then a Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry from SMU. He is married to Amanda Kalescky and has two children, Eleanor and Andrew. Rob is an avid marathon runner.

SMUSA Staff Celebration and Convocation 2020 13 President’s Award Winner 2020 Outstanding Leadership Curt Herridge

Curt Herridge is the Executive Director of Data and Application Services in the Office of Information Technology. He began his career in what was called ITS in 2007 as a Systems Administrator to help convert from a document imaging system to ImageNow, otherwise known as AdminImages. He was then promoted to Team Lead in 2008. He was promoted again to Director of Applications in 2014 and was subsequently promoted to Executive Director of Data and Application Services. Before SMU, Curt worked as a Senior Systems Architect for GMAC Mortgage. He grew up in Dallas and attended Lake Highlands High School. Curt then attended the University of Texas at Austin where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration, Management Information Systems, and SMU where he earned a Master of Business Administration, IT and Operations Management. He is married to Erika Herridge and has two children, Miles (17) and Margot (14). Curt enjoys running, hiking, camping, Legos, and is often working on house and yard projects.

SMUSA Staff Celebration and Convocation 2020 14 Loretta O’Reilly Hawkins Award

The Loretta O’Reilly Hawkins Award was established to recognize and reward employees who represent the qualities and spirit of Loretta O’Reilly Hawkins, her love of SMU, her commitment to the community, and her high standards for work and life. Loretta O’Reilly Hawkins was a member of the university staff for 37 years, from 1924 to 1961, during which time she held various roles, including assistant to President C.C. Selecman and President Umphrey Lee. Her retirement in 1961 was announced in a lead editorial in entitled “Loretta’s Leaving.”

Mrs. Hawkins was a single parent who was devoted to both SMU and her family, working tirelessly through the depression (and a 66% pay cut for staff employees) to better the university, while also taking on part-time and evening work to support her family. She had an excellent reputation in the community and high standards of accomplishment in work, family, and the art of living. This award was endowed by Mr. Dallas E. Hawkins II, to honor his mother and her life as well as to benefit the university to which she was so dedicated. Loretta O’Reilly Hawkins Award Winner 2020 Rachel Mulry Executive Director of Customer Service, Office of Information Technology

Rachel first worked at SMU as an undergraduate student in the Meadows Computer Lab. She returned to SMU after graduation, and in 1999 helped with Y2K preparations. After having her child in 2001, she worked part-time in one of SMU’s first telecommuting positions. Since that time, she has held several roles with the OIT Customer Service team, such as Help Desk, Desktop Support, Help Desk Manager, Communications, Project Management, and Service Desk Manager. Before SMU, Rachel was a Middle School Choir Director. She grew up in New Orleans, LA and attended Mount Carmel Academic High School. She earned a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from SMU, performed mission work for a year, and is currently enrolled in the Masters of Higher Education Leadership program at Simmons. She received the OIT Employee of the Month Award in 2006, 2009, and 2010 and the President’s Award for Outstanding Leadership 2019. She has been married to Patrick Mulry for twenty-three years and has three children, Katie, Caroline, and Colleen. She enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, cooking, walking and running outdoors, and reading and learning new skills.
