Voice of Democracy Winners Mifflinburg Seniors, Levi Showalter and Olivia Young wrote essays which were chosen as Local winners, as well as District winners! Levi placed 2nd in the School Competition and placed 1st in the District Competition. Olivia placed 1st in the School Competition and 3rd in the District Competition. The Voice of Democracy Competition sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars has been going on for over thirty years and provides Scholarship prizes to winning participants. This year’s theme was “Why My Vote Matters”. Local Mifflinburg VFW Chapter 1964 provides awards including a check, a plaque and a pin to winners. All Mifflinburg Seniors participate in this competition by writing an essay. If the student’s essay is chosen as a winner, the students then deliver a speech. Olivia gave her speech at the Mifflinburg High School’s VFW Assembly on November 12, 2018, and Levi gave his speech at the District Banquet on January 20, 2019 as the District Winner in Mount Union, PA. He also attended the State Banquet on January 27, 2019 in Pittsburgh, PA. Levi has accumulated total winnings of $1,700.00 in this competition. Wow! Both students are looking forward to attending college in the Fall. Levi would like to pursue a career researching in plant science. As of now, he is unsure of whether he will attend Penn State or Cornell. Olivia plans to attend Elizabethtown College and would like to pursue a career in occupational therapy. Thank you to the following people who assist in this competition: Mr. John Sumner, Mrs. Beth Faunce (Voice of Democracy Coordinator) and Mr. Timothy Shaffer.
