Dear parents, staff and learners After a wonderfully balmy winter There is a busy term ahead, starting with our Mandela break, it is back to work for us all. Day Assembly, Sports Awards and Inter-house athletics, Parents’ Evenings, Team Building for the Grade 8s and the Senior Leaders, all the winter sports and the usual cultural activities, progressing to the Grade 9 Subject Choice Evening early in August, followed by the Plays Festival, Senior Leader Induction, photo days, Interhigh, the Schools’ Festival for the Grade 11s, and ending with the Heritage Day celebrations. Everything is even more jam-packed because of the number of public and school holidays this term: Wednesday 3 August Provincial Elections Monday 8 August School holiday Tuesday 9 August National Women’s Day Saturday 24 September Heritage Day

Mathematics Olympiad, a national Maths competition in which hundreds of schools across the country participate. This year there were 49 000 entries in the first round of the senior Maths Olympiad. Eight of our learners made it through to the second round of the senior Olympiad, to compete with 10 000 learners across the country. Our senior learners were: Carl Ginster, Mahir Ambelal, Taariq Hassim, Ahmed Khan, Farhaan Amod, Joachim Grobbelaar and Tinotenda Mudzingwa. Zaheer Sooliman, Salmaan Suliman, Kimberley Masanzu, Najeeha Jeewa, and Laila Mahomed qualified to write the second round of the Junior Olympiad. Since 2004, no Greensider has reached the third and final round of the Maths Olympiad - until now. This year, Mahir Ambelal qualified and competed against the top 100 senior learners in the country in the final round. An amazing achievement! This term join THE ART CLUB! Art Club is a wonderful opportunity to be creative and see exciting results. Interested learners come G together on a Thursday afternoon in Ms van Zyl’s class to explore new and different ways to create artworks. The Art Clubbers have completed various projects with excellent results. The Clubbers have made their own art journal out of a variety of papers and designed a creative cover using marbled paper and the collage technique. The Art Clubbers also learnt to paint a still-life using food colouring and bleach. They have woven an abstract-designed placemat from magazine pages and designed their own painted noodle-design picture frame. Zentangle and making pretty tissue flowers for Mother’s Day were amongst the projects completed. The Art Club is run by Ms van Zyl with the invaluable help of Ms Porres and Ms Powell. Art Club is an enriching experience in which to participate and all are welcome. Grade 8 Team Building PAGE 3

And of course, what would any show be without a charismatic Master of Ceremonies, and for this we thank Mr Channon for lending himself to the Revue.
