Can we go any faster?

There has been recent debate about whether or not humans can run much faster than they currently are. Scientists have extrapolated physiological limits on how fast horses and dogs are able to run, but it seems that nobody is quite ready to make that call for the human body. I like to think it’s because the scientists know they have no objective measure of the power of the human spirit.

GRADE TOURS ARE AWESOME! Every year the Grade 4 - 7 children at Dainfern College Preparatory go on a class tour. This is done early in the year to give the children a chance to bond with their new teachers and as a grade.

Grade 4 fun at Valley of the Waves GRADE 5 TOUR We had lots of fun activities on camp. We had to learn to rock climb. This was very scary but we all made it and felt very proud when we got back to the ground. We also had to climb a very high spider’s web. One of our activities was to build a raft and race the other groups in the river. This was lots of fun.

On the first night we had a potjie competition. We had night time activities like dodgeball and golden bullion and then we got hot chocolate. We also went for a walk early in the morning to watch the sunrise. This was the best camp ever! Grade 5 pupils

GRADE 6 TOUR Some of the fun activities that we did at Chameleon Adventure Academy were kayaking, swimming in the mud (which I was not very happy about) and rock climbing. The instructors even let us Grade 4 boys at camp swim when it was hot and we had a lot of fun playing in the pool. The camp facilitators were really fun and taught us lots of fun Here the children describe in their own words the fun they had: songs and war cries.

GRADE 4 TOUR I think we all agree that this was one of the best camps we’ve ever We arrived at Sediba Kwele and went to eat lunch and that was been to, with great food, people, fun and laughter. delicious. After that we changed into old clothes and then we went Gabriella Blyth to the mud fights. It was slimy and gross and our hair was black afterwards. Next we went to a water slide to get clean. It was amazing! The next day we left for the Valley of the Waves. The first ride we went on was the Lazy River and that was relaxing. After that we went to the tube rides: they were so fast. Next my friends and I went to the body slides. They were so scary. Early the next morning we went on the zipline and I thought that was epic! Erin Ryan

GRADE 7 TOUR The wild-eyed adrenalin junkies took ‘Amazwingzwing’ in their stride, while the rest of us screamed in terror, relieved to make it to the other side. We then arrived at the campsite and had great fun on the joyride slippery slide. Later, the ‘fashionistas’ got busy creating the outfits using black dustbin bags, newspaper and sticky tape. Then our ‘up-and-coming models’ tried their hardest to impress the judges.

The next day’s activities consisted of quick-thinking and a time limit where winning was everything. That evening we searched the Grade 5 potijie competition grounds for materials to create African villages small enough to fit on a paper plate. We also experienced a rather traumatic trust exercise. Eyes covered with blindfolds, all but one person in a group held on to the shoulders of the person in front as they were led through an obstacle course, trusting the one person who wasn’t wearing a blindfold. Plant a Grassland Garden with indigenous plants in 10 steps I just love the wildness and glow of a grassland garden which is ever- changing with new things to see on a daily basis.

rassland gardens are full of life, with a multitude of creatures visiting and living in them. Selecting Gindigenous plants suitable for grasslands and meadows will result in good biodiversity (plant, animal and micro-organisms).

Before you get started, however, it is important that you understand the difference between a grass garden and a grassland garden. Grass gardens are planted up purely with grasses. Grassland gardens, on the other hand, include indigenous veld grasses, wildflowers, bulbs, Aloes etc., and non- living elements (wood, stone and often, Grasslands are thought to be one of the most ancient water). vegetation types in the world. Grasslands support up to 81 species of plants per 1 000 m2. Of every six plants found in unspoilt South African grasslands only one is a grass.

This Crinum is to simulate the clearance of old Bulbispermum grass by fire and grazing, and the extra light and space afforded to the bulbs, flowering plants and herbs will encourage them to flower and put on new growth.

Rivalry between siblings

The marvel of having a sibling – it is a blessing for some and for others it is a completely different, negative experience.

he art of mastering sibling rivalry is yet to be achieved. Environmental stressors can also play a role in igniting tension As the saying goes: It takes two to tango; there isn’t between siblings and infl uence the way siblings resolve one guilty party and one innocent party. It all boils down confl ict. As parents, we try to instill good values and manners to the cause of the tension or the circumstances the in our children and that way they develop an internal belief Tsiblings fi nd themselves in. system, including the morals to know what is right and wrong.

Our siblings push buttons that cast us in roles we felt sure we had let go of long ago - the baby, the peacekeeper, the caretaker, the avoider.... It doesn’t seem to matter how much time has elapsed or how far we’ve travelled. – Jane Mersky Leder

Disagreements between siblings could be provoked by a third party, or an object. The root of it all is sometimes not clear, but the disagreement seems valid at the time. The sibling may think afterwards that it was all a silly attempt to win or gain something that is not that valuable anyway. Disagreements could be about size, amount or the value of the item.

Negative bouts could be caused by an array of triggers namely, sweets, toys, gifts, tiredness, hunger, jealousy, taking turns, making choices, boredom and long trips.

Rivalry between siblings is inevitable, and most of the time you cannot escape from that, but always know that you should strive for a good and positive outcome for both parties involved. It doesn’t matter if it’s a boy or a girl, it could be The family is one of nature’s masterpieces. – George Santayana

the opposite gender or the same gender. It also depends on the age of the children: when they are younger, temper tantrums are likely to happen when something is taken away or not given or handed over immediately. The temper tantrum can escalate or it can be controlled in a healthy and positive manner.

For a parent, guardian or caregiver, it could be a challenge to establish control between siblings. It takes patience and a clear plan to defuse the situation. Sibling rivalry could be an ongoing situation or it could only last a few years. It is imperative to teach your children the value of solving difficulties and to be good examples of how to resolve conflict. Consistency is the key for your children to understand how things work and what the healthy way is to solve any problem.

Style Sessions are a fun and cost-effective way for a group of friends and colleagues to get the most out of Rachel’s consultations. For a group fee, Rachel will either host the gathering at her home or go to a hostess’ home (or suitable venue) to offer advice to groups of up to six people over snacks and a bottle of wine, at a tea party or during a meal.

“For Style Sessions, the subject matter is limitless,” she adds. “The sessions are between 2 and 2 ½ hours long and they’re normally very interactive. Topics could cover anything from: the psychology and impact of the colours you wear, dressing for interview or date night success, dressing to suit your lifestyle, perking up your work wardrobe, the right clothes for “dress-down Friday”, fi nding the perfect swimsuit, or how to choose and pack clothes for travelling.”

For teenagers, school-leavers and job seekers, Rachel discusses such things as grooming, body language, etiquette, and protocol. Men can also benefi t from style advice, she says. WHOLE MOUTH HEALTH THE SECRET TO WHOLE BODY HEALTH

Ongoing research indicates that poor oral hygiene may be linked to a number of chronic health conditions such as hyperglycaemia, type 2 Diabetes, respiratory disorders, gastrointestinal malignancies, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. This is one of the reasons why that six-monthly dental check-up is essential if you want to keep your body in peak condition.

t’s quite amazing how we all seem to forget that the general condition of our bodies starts at the mouth. We focus on all the other aches and Ipains in the body, completely ignoring the fact that what we take in through our mouths is also influenced by the general health of our teeth and gums.

With an over-full stressed lifestyle, it’s too easy to keep postponing dental check-ups, but even though you brush your teeth regularly, build-up of tartar and plaque can lead to bleeding gums and a host of other dental problems. Routine visits to the dentist can help to prevent gum disease and tooth decay as well as address other dental problems that, if neglected, can become worse.

Cry Baby By Lauren Liebenberg

When Super Mom meets problem child – which one is really lost?

s he nears his fifth birthday, Sam’s curious dreams of a seemingly lost childA begin to intrude with quiet insidiousness upon his waking state. As Sam’s mother, Grace, watches with growing fear the disturbing changes taking place in her charming, spirited son – the fighting at school, the bed-wetting, the hot flares of defiance – she begins to search for what lies behind his nightmares, a search that will take her deeper and deeper into the sub-strata of love and bondage, buried beneath the surface of the family and into its molten heart.

Cry Baby is a story about boyhood, about motherhood, about what binds families, the past to the present, about suffocation and deliverance. It is at once a stinging satirical slap across the face of barren suburbia and a poignant hymn to the extraordinary beauty in ordinary lives.

Dainfern Valley resident, Lauren Liebenberg, is a writer, mostly on the subject of breeding in captivity. Her debut novel, The Voluptuous Delights of Peanut Butter and Jam, published in 2008, was – to her lasting surprise – short-listed for the Orange Prize for New Writers, as well as long-listed for the Sunday Times Fiction Prize. Her second novel, The West Rand Jive Cats’ Boxing Club, was published in 2011, also to international acclaim.

Lauren was born in Zimbabwe, where she spent most of her childhood pedal-by toilet-rolling the neighbours in a Lauren now lives in the suburban outback of , tiara fashioned from tinsel and wire, playing ding-dong- in the shadow of the sewerage pipe that spans the e-Coli ditch and dreaming of someday becoming the lead singer of infested Jukskei River.
