A happy and blessed Pentecost to you all! Pentecost is the celebration of so many things: the Holy Spirit’s descent upon the apostles, the apostles beginning their mission to spread the Good News, and we remember the gift of the Holy Spirit that we have received. There is so much to be thankful for as we mark this important feast! But in a funny way, Pentecost also marks the end of the big seasons of the year. Think about it, the Church year starts with the season of Advent, which rolls right into the season of Christmas, we take a few weeks off, then it’s Lent, the Triduum, and Easter one after the other. But now, all of a sudden, we are thrown back into ordinary time for the entire second half of the year. This abrupt shift away from festive or even penitential seasons reminds us that all those festivities, Christmas, Easter, Pentecost, are celebrated for a reason. They don’t exist simply for the sake of enjoying a feast, but to embolden us, to empower us to live our lives in a way that draws us and others to Christ. The Resurrection, though remembered most vividly on Easter Sunday, is really a truth we need to live out all year, we are Resurrection people! While at Pentecost we remember the day when the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles, that doesn’t mean today is the only day the Spirit is with us! No! Each of us has been a temple of the Holy Spirit since we were baptized, but today reminds us of that important truth, and energizes us to take advantage of the gifts we have received. So today marks the end of the Easter Season, and so we return to ordinary time refreshed, renewed, enlivened, bringing the gifts that we have been reminded of with us. May we live the rest of this year in a way that gives glory to God, living our ordinary times in faith, with great hope, and always in the love that God Who is Love has given us! Come Holy Spirit! Fr. Josh
