Tribe

Last fall we had a little cultural experiment that resulted in a fantastic student-alumni art exhibit. In fact it was such a success that some artists had already submitted their work for the 2018 show before the end of the school year in June!

We are thrilled to be hosting the sophomore edition of Tribe, an intergenerational exhibit of art from current and former Lane Tech students, from September 13th through October 19th. And when we say intergenerational, we mean it! Artists exhibiting their work this fall will range from the Class of 1954 to the Class of 2021! One of the special things about this show, and the opening reception in particular, is that veteran artists are able to share their knowledge and experiences with emerging artists who are just learning their craft. Conversely, our more “seasoned” alumni get to drink from the creative fountain of youth and get a glimpse into the future.

We hope you will be able to stop by during school hours and see the work of these talented artists, and celebrate the culture that connects us all, no matter our age. James Ascot ‘69

Jim reflects the quintessential immigrant success story. Arriving from Greece at age nine,he flourished in Chicago’s public school system, and after graduating from Lane, attended Bradley University, earning his BS and MA degrees in guidance and counseling. He later added a PhD from Columbia Pacific University in San Rafael, California to his professional credentials. He was a therapist at Forest Hospital in Des Plaines and served thereafter as its Director of Outpatient Placement Services. He later worked at Loretto Hospital in Chicago as a crisis intervention specialist in the emergency room. In 1986 his career changed trajectory when he established Ascot Realty Group, Inc., a Chicago-based firm focused on property management and commercial property development, sales and leasing, Jim holds a real estate broker license in Illinois, and belongs to many professional organizations including the Chicago Association of REALTORS® where he is past President, and has served on numerous committees of the Illinois and National Associations of REALTORS®. Jim has also been very active in his community. He has participated in numerous civic organizations and committees including the Election Day Voter Registration Commission, where he served as its Chairman. If you enjoy the convenience of early voting these days, you can thank Jim! He was also a candidate in the Democratic Party primary for the U.S. Congress from Illinois’ 7th Congressional District in 2006. After attending his 20th reunion at Lane in 1989, Jim became an active LTAA Board Member and served as its second President from 1992 to 1999. 1989 also marked the inception of the Local School Council initiative, and Mayor Richard M. Daley appointed Jim to the very first Lane Tech Local School Council as a community representative. Then when Jim’s son Denis entered Lane, he was reelected as a parent representative to the LSC. For half of the nineties, Jim was simultaneously President of the LTAA and Chairman of the LSC, having a significant impact on Lane’s evolution. Jim is a proud member of the Lane Tech Hall of Fame, and now we are happy to report that the prodigal son has returned home. After almost twenty years, Jim has rejoined the Board of Directors at the LTAA!

The new website is vice, you are back at the LTAA. Why? commencement. It was a truly moving great, and automation of the programs JA: Although I stepped away from LTAA experience to be in the stadium, on leadership, I am a life member of the we started in the 80s like scholarships the dais together with my son, and an Association and continued to attend build on the vision of the founders in incredible demonstration of love for, events and support the organization 1985, but have become streamlined and and from Lane Tech. You can’t ask for a over the years. I like what the LTAA is relevant. The organization is also more better moment then that! diverse and inclusive, and working to be 8 • Lane Tech Today LOL! Laneites on the Loose

Hey! Hey! ! It’s got a chaaaaance… gone! Alumni Night at Wrigley was a home run, no matter how you say it! A record 665 tickets were sold to Lane alums from the classes of 1944 through 2017, for the June 6th game against the Phillies. Those arriving early were rewarded with a scoreboard clock, the opportunity to watch Joe Namath throw out the first pitch, and most importantly, to see the current Lane Tech JROTC Color Guard present the colors before Wayne Messmer belted out the national anthem. Throughout the night, old friends high-fived and hugged, and everyone enjoyed seeing the ballpark peppered with myrtle and gold… including the occasional sweater complements of stalwart Pom Pom girls and Lettermen. By the 4th inning the Cubs were comfortably ahead at 3-0 but in the 6th inning, the Phillies tied it up and in the top of the 9th they pulled ahead with two runs… sigh… all too familiar resignation set in. Then in the bottom of the 9th, with two outs and the bases loaded, Jason Heyward stepped up to the plate. Thud. Not to be deflated on our awesome Alumni Night, Laneites in the stands leapt to their feet, turned their hats inside out, donned their rally caps, cheered “let’s go Cubbies” and hoped for a dignified ending. The stands were vibrating. Then on a 2-2 Adam Morgan pitch, everyone hear a crack, and like the slow-motion scene in “The Natural” we watched Heyward’s smash head confidently into the right field bleachers. Oh my. The next thing everyone knew, we were singing “Go Cubs Go” and unfurling “W” flags. Jason Heyward had raised his batting average 39 points with a walk off grand slam and a win for the Cubs! It was an incredible ending to a fantastic evening full of joy and celebration. Thank you to everyone who bought tickets, wore Cubby Blue and/or Myrtle and Gold, and made the pilgrimage to Wrigley for such a special night. Thanks too, go out to our perennially plucky Director of Alumni Relations, Joanna Perez, and LTAA Board Vice President, and one-man ticket procurement machine, Jim Guerin who worked so hard to make the evening enjoyable for everyone. We hope you agree, and that you will be back for 2019!

And they’re off! Thanks to everyone who came out to our inaugural Clocktower Club at Arlington Racecourse on July 21st. No alums hit it rich, nor did they lose their shirts, but they did enjoy connecting to one another! Our group even picked up a few stray alumni who were there by coincidence and just happened upon us. Alumni enjoyed a reserved area with flat screens and betting machines located next to our tables, and doors out to the track nearby for those who wanted to watch their horses win up close. Lane Brains huddled together strategizing on best picks for each race, and at the end of the afternoon, we actually had about a dozen winners, although nothing that would call for an early retirement! Still… it was a great afternoon and a definite addition to our Clocktower rotation! Summer 2018 • 9 10 • Lane Tech Today In Memoriam

Fleischhacker (’52) 2018 tuition, room and board, textbooks, and maybe that trip Edward H. These gifts are particularly significant in Joseph Caldrone (’56) 2018 that they come from donors who understand the journey, Roland Giampaoli (’56) 2018 and the potential of these new Lane graduates like no Roland J. Nicholas Fanale (’58) 2018 Every alumnus and friend of the LTAA who has made 1960-1969 a donation is important to us, but as much as we try Thomas M. Peterson (’65) 2018 donate via regular mail or through our website, we ask J. Wallace (’60) 2018 that you include permission to have your name publicly acknowledged. Despite our best efforts, including 1970-1979 additional email requests and some forensics in compiling Nicholas Diakoumis (’72) 2018 this list, we were not able to include several loyal donors. Michael Carbonelli (’76) 1986 Please know that even if your name does not appear on 1980-1989 this roster, if you have made a donation, we are grateful! Dale S. Ray (’81) 2018 2010-Present THANK YOU!
