Ukrainian Festival! The Calgary Ukrainian Festival was created in 2010 Andrea Slobodian as a way to celebrate the city’s rich heritage and bring together various community organizations. This year’s festival commemorated the 120th an- niversary of Ukrainian settlement in Canada and honoured pioneers with an exhibit by the Ukrai- nian Museum of Canada, Calgary collection.

The large marketplace featured vendors of music, ceramics, books, clothes, jewelry and gift items – everything from pysanky to Art by Larisa (whose painting “Waiting Backstage” was commissioned for the Tryzub School fundraiser earlier this year) and of course, yellow and blue jerseys for this summer’s 2012 UEFA European Football Champi- onship, hosted by Ukraine and Poland.

As a feature act in the finale show, 40 Ensemble dancers will light up the sky in front of 25,000 people. The show will be projected across the lake on a ‘jumbo-tron’ screen. Tryzub’s music is being re-orchestrated by Donovan Seidle of Kensington Sinfonia, who will be leading the orchestra that will accompany Tryzub.

“This is possibly the most technical show Try- zub has ever been involved in”, John Stadnyk (Globalfest Coordinator). The dancers and musicians will be listening to the CD music. The musicians will be playing their music. The audience will hear both CD and orchestra si- multaneously. To add to the complexity – the stage is surrounded by hills and beside a lake – so acoustically there are major challenges to overcome.

40 dancers – WOW! Where did they come from? 15 alumni dancers are pulling their boots out of the dark corner of a closet to re- join the Ensemble for this epic show. “Many of us were around when Globalfest started, and when asked to be part of the 10th Anniversary 7

Who’s in the Tryzub Ensemble? Where in the are you?

Tryzub Alumni,

Each of us has many chapters in our history, and for some of us, these chapters follow a common thread. As a Ukrainian dancer, one of our goals is the preservation of our Ukrainian heritage. Whether to rekindle old friendships, network with peers, or form new business contacts, it is always important to reconnect with those from our past.

We have reached out far into the world – Tryzub Alumni Association wants to locate all of our alumni! Artistic Director: Contact [email protected] to confirm your email Vasyl Kanevets address.
