Monitoring Maunga’s pests stepped up

Pests on Maungatautari are now under greater surveillance with the completion of an extra 90km of monitoring lines across the 3,400 hectares of native forest on the mountain. This brings the total length of monitoring lines on the mountain to 260km. The monitoring line cutting exercise started in 2006 when Maungatautari staff and volunteers cut 80km of lines along the inside of the pest proof fence and 90km across ridgelines on the mountain. This additional 90km of monitoring lines means that there is now a tracking tunnel within 100m of any given point on the mountain. ‘‘Essentially we have doubled our surveillance on the mountain, giving us a better picture of where pests are and therefore helping us to eliminate them,’’ says Maungatautari Trust operations mana- ger Pim de Monchy. This was a huge task. More than 20 people including volunteers, students from Te Awamutu College, staff and contractors spent more than 3,000 hours battling their way through supplejack and clambering up steep gullies to get the lines cut on time. The narrow monitoring lines have been cut through the forest to provide access for volunteers checking more than 2,600 tracking tunnels - devices which detect pest activity. Tracking cards, which have an ink centre, record the footprints of any animal which moves through the tracking tunnel. The cards are read by experts to determine which species are present. ‘‘It is a critical step for the pest eradication operation on Maungatautari. We are currently in the middle of the largest pest eradication operation ever attempted on mainland New Zealand with the aim of removing every introduced mammalian pest. To do that effectively we need to be able to regularly monitor which pests remain on the mountain and where they are,’’ Mr de Monchy says. Following three aerial poison drops over Maungatautari in November and December 2006 and September 2007, and subsequent ground hunting operations, remnant populations of only four pest species remain. Pest eradication experts are currently locating and eradicating the last two goats, small numbers of rabbits and hares which have been detected along the pest proof fence boundary, and the previously mentioned pockets of mice. Volunteers and Maungatautari staff have taken up the challenge to monitor the 2,600 tunnels monthly for the next year. The monitoring lines have been divided into 58 volunteer monitoring circuits with an average length of 4.5km. With the circuits ranging from relatively easy walking to rough and steep scram- bling, Maungatautari staff helped volunteers choose appropriate circuits to suit individual fitness levels. Each circuit takes between three and seven hours to walk. ‘‘We have got volunteers signed up for 40 of the 58 circuits so are on the lookout for more people who are bush-savvy and keen to go tramping once a month.’’ Two enclosures, the 35ha northern enclosure and the 65ha southern enclosure, on Maungatautari are already pest free. Volunteers have regularly checked tracking tunnels within these enclosures since 2004. In 2005 the enclosures were declared safe for endangered species with kiwi being released in July 2005. In December 2007 the restoration project’s first kiwi chick hatched in the southern enclosure. The Trust stresses that the monitoring lines are for work purposes only and urges visitors to the mountain to stay on the main walking tracks marked with orange triangles. All visitors to the mountain are also asked to check their bags and belongings to ensure that mice 129TC-6202064AA and weeds are not inadvertently brought into the pest-free areas. In his speech at a farewell assembly for Puahue principal Alison Crooks, former pupil Callum Burkes said he would probably never recover from a traumatic event when he first started school. ‘‘The thing I remember most about room one was the ‘celebrations’ unit. ‘‘We talked about heaps of different types of celebrations around the world and finished with a full scale wedding in our classroom. ‘‘We all got dressed up, our parents came and it was really cool. But I don’t think I’ll ever recover from having to marry Briar when I was just five!’’ University student Kim Johnson also spoke about her memories of Mrs Crooks. ‘‘When I heard she was leaving I thought ‘wow those are going to be huge boots to fill’. ‘‘She is a special principal who anchors the whole school - she knows each individual student and is there for every child in the school. ‘‘She takes pleasure in hearing what you’ve been doing and is proud of her past and present students.’’ Other past pupils, as well as a number of parents and local principals, joined current pupils to farewell Mrs Crooks at the special assembly. After 12 years at the rural primary school she has taken up a position this term with the Ministry of Education. ‘‘Puahue has been a wonderful school with special parents and students. Thirteen-year-old rising star Compton Pikari and three other up-and-coming Te Whetu Marama students did their club proud compet- ingintheNewZea- land Maori Under-19 Championship at Ngaruawahia. Pikari enhanced his rapidly growing TEX HAUMAHA reputation by finish- ing third in the senior gross with rounds of 76, 76, 76, 73, fifth overall, and first in his age group (division one). He has again been selected to compete at next year’s New Zealand Under-19 Maori Nationals in Christchurch. His best scores over the past three months have been a one-under-par 71 at Rotorua, 72 at Pirongia, 73 at Te Awamutu and 73 at Ngaruawahia. Pikari’s club-mates Herewini Hohepa (10), Kirkham Reweti (14) and Tex Haumaha (14) all had their moments at Ngaruawahia, particularly Haumaha who won the division two stableford of his age group. The 14 handicapper saved his best to last, shooting 87 following rounds of 90, 93, 98, and 88 the day before the tournament.
