St. Anthony of Padua Parish Opioid Action Committee Update Last April, along with some 24 other congregations, at a meeting of 1,300 citizens at St. Anthony’s High School in South Huntington, we launched an all-out effort to do everything we can - as family members, as leaders of institutions, and as citizens - to respond effectively to this epidemic. We challenged our own congregations and nonprofits, as well as institutions and leaders across multiple sectors, to do everything in our power to help prevent opioid use and overdoses and to encourage effective opioid treatment and lifelong recovery. As a result of this ongoing work, leaders and institutions in key sectors are taking greater responsibility. More than 40 con- gregations have conducted educational sessions or “listening campaigns” to attack the stigma surrounding the subject of addiction and to become more competent at helping families facing addiction-related challenges at every stage. School superintendents are develop- ing comprehensive, K-12 substance use prevention plans and supporting student initiatives. On November 7, more than 500 educa- tors from 42 public school districts attended LI-CAN’s Educators’ Conference on Substance Use in the Age of Opioids - sharing best practices across Long Island. Since then we have been working with the Catholic Hospitals of Long Island, and the Northwell group to improve emergency room treatment of addicted patients, We have also met with Congressmen Tom Suozzi and Lee Zeldin on our proposal for superfund to be paid for by the pharmaceutical companies to alleviate the drug epidemic. Of concern to the Congressman and our committee is that the funds be distributed in ways that will do the most good. Recently we met with Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy Sini. DA Sini brought us up to date on what he and other Suffolk and Nassau County officials are doing to save lives of addicts and espe- cially in overdose cases. Our next event is: CALLING ALL MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS! DOCTORS, HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATORS, NURSE PRACTITIONERS, PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS, EMT’S, NURSES, MEDICAL STUDENTS… YOUR HELP IS NEEDED TO SAVE LIVES!!!

More medical professionals are urgently needed who are committed and qualified to provide MAT -- and more education and support are needed for these practitioners. This conference will include training that fulfills 4 hours of the in-person requirements for medical professionals to receive a DEA waiver to prescribe buprenorphine. Speakers and workshop presenters will include: LLOYD SEDERER, M.D. MICHAEL DELMAN, M.D. Medical Director, NY State Office of Mental Health President-Elect, NY Society of Addiction Medicine PATRICK O’SHAUGHNESSY, M.D. ADAM BISAGA, M.D., LESLIE MARINO, M.D. Medical Director, Catholic Health System of L.I. March 4, 2018 3rd Sunday of Lent We all have things in our lives that don’t belong there. Maybe it’s the poor way we allow someone to treat us, maybe it’s a habitual sin, maybe it’s a pattern of thought or attitude that traps us in a cy- cle of regret, anger, or an inability to forgive. Jesus has bold words for us today: “Take these out of here.” When we hear the story of the Cleansing of the Temple, it can be easy to look down on the animal-sellers and money-changers. For many of us, the negative influences in our lives don’t come out of nowhere. We might have considered them quite practical and Aria Grace Lopresti reasonable initially. We wanted to keep the peace, so we allowed someone to talk to us disrespectfully. A person hurt us deeply and we weren’t prepared to let go of our resentment right away. Over time, these can fester and corrupt our inner life in a way we didn’t expect. Observances for the Week of March 4, 2018 The response of Jesus is a strong one. “He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area.” God wants us to be rd Sunday: 3 Sunday of Lent whole, healthy human beings. -11- LENT

“Lent is a favorable season for opening the doors to all those in need and recognizing in them the face of Christ. Each of us meets people like this every day” ~Pope Francis

Dear Friends: During the special Lenten season, please allow me to share a special request with you. If you have never con- tributed to the Catholic Ministries Appeal, or if you haven’t contributed in a number of years, please consider making this the year that you join with me and other members of this Parish family and make a donation to the 2018 Appeal. As you may already be aware, 100% of all the money raised by this fund helps support more than 60 pro- grams and services that the people of our church as well as all of the people on Long Island have come to rely on. These programs include services to people in need; affordable housing for senior citizens; people with dis- abilities and our veterans, as well as formation of our priests, deacons, lay leaders, and young people. These are just a few of the programs that help make our church and this Island a vibrant and wonderful place to live. But to help ensure that we can always serve those who come to us for aid, support and spiritual guidance, we need help from you!

If 100 of our parishioners, who have not supported us in the recent past, made a $25 contribution this year – think about how many more people we could help. If that amount is more than you can manage, consider $5 or $10. Every gift counts and makes a difference in the lives of others!

Make checks payable to: Catholic Ministries Appeal Parish ______Pledge: $______Name ______Down payment: $______Address______City, State, Zip: ______Phone:______

-16- Draw Me Unto Thee..

Draw Me Unto Thee…

Tuesday’s during Lent at 10 AM Lent: with God’s grace, we have an opportunity to witness and share our most authentic selves during this hour of prayer. Something radically new is happening, not to us, but through us. I invite you to the rectory every week, as we reach toward God and one another! Sister Dorothy

St Baldrick’s

It's that time of year again and we're kicking off our 2018 effort to fight childhood cancer by raising funds through the annual St. Baldrick's head-shaving event on Sunday, March 11th at Miller's Long Island Ale House in Commack (3:00 pm).

Last year our Knights of Columbus team raised over $6,100 and all together over the last 11 years, we have raised almost $90,000 to fund cancer research! All of us have been touched by this disease and your support over the years has led to unbelievable breakthroughs in cancer research. If you would like to join in the effort to fight this dread disease, please go to our Fr. Thomas A. Judge K of C team website at www.stbaldricks.org/teams/FrJudgeKofC2018 and click on "Donate" or contact Bob Slingo at (631) 486-2875. Thank you!
