At UConn, he was selected to play in the Brian Herosian MEDIA Darrell Wilson DB New England (NFL) 1980 North-South All-Star Shrine Game in Miami following his senior year. 184 2003 UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE UCONN AND THE NFL BRIAN KOZLOWSKI BECOMES SECOND HUSKY PREVIEW TO PLAY IN THE SUPER BOWL Former Husky Brian Kozlowski became the second UConn alumnus to play in the Super Bowl in January 1999. Kozlowski was the starting fullback for the NFC Champion Atlanta Falcons, who lost to the Denver Broncos. Kozlowski played at UConn from 1989-1992 and was a two- time All-Yankee Conference selection. In 1998, he was one of 44 players selected to the UConn 100th Anniversary All-Time Football Team. It was a very short field goal – we’d call it a “chip shot” many years later. Yet it was an event that will never be forgotten, at least to football historians who keep track of such relatively obscure moments. It also turned out to be the highlight of Bill Shockley’s football career, which guaranteed him a small slice of fame for as long as the New York Jets play football. William Albert Shockley Jr. was born on March 13, 1937 in West Chester, Pennsylvania. The story of his family tree is a little confusing from a distance, at least when looking at Ancestry.com. Bill Sr. was born on Sept. 26, 1912, in either Port Deposit, Maryland, or in Avondale, Pennsylvania – accounts differ. The United States census has the whole family (there were three other children) living in Port Deposit by 1920. Mother Maria Jane Day was born in Port Deposit on July 30, 1915, and it looks as if Bill Sr. and Maria were married sometime in the early 1930s. In any event, the family eventually ended up in the area of West Chester, Pennsylvania. That town is located an hour west of Philadelphia and 35 minutes north of Wilmington. If you are old enough to remember Commodore computers in the mid-1980s, you should know that the home office was located in West Chester.     THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 16, No. 2 (1994) JOHN RIGGINS THE DIESEL By Don Smith John Riggins was an all-America running back at the University of Kansas where he surpassed most of Gale Sayers' rushing records. He was the No. 1 draft choice of the New York Jets and the sixth player chosen in the 1971 NFL draft. Yet he wasn't at all sure he would make it in the pros. "I wasn't a very good player in college, to tell you the truth," he insisted. "I thought I might be the first No. 1 draft choice to be cut. I'd seen a few big names flop just ahead of me." But Riggins was not cut. Instead he launched a 14-year pro career that saw him play five seasons with the Jets and nine years with the Washington Redskins. In 14 seasons, he rushed for 11,352 yards, the sixth highest total of all time, and he accounted for 13,435 combined net yards, ninth most ever. His 116 career touchdowns and 104 rushing touchdowns are both No. 3 in the record book. Those achievements were recognized for posterity in 1992 with his election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Riggins was a 6-2, 240-pound workhorse who could always be depended upon for an all-out performance on the field. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on the view point of those who were affected, his off- the-field antics were just as dependable -- they could be counted on to make the kind of news that tended to overshadow his excellent contributions as a player.
