an you please settle a disagreement I am having with my parents? Do they have to dress in a certain way when they come to pick me up at school? I say that they should respect the rules of the school and that my dad Cshould wear his kippah and my mom shouldn’t wear shorts or her gym clothes. It makes me feel uncomfortable when my teachers see my parents like that. I don’t always wear my kippah when I’m not in school, but I wear it when I am here because that is one of the rules about going to Ramaz. Are the rules only for kids when they are in school? A Confused Student

Dear Confused, You ask a very good question. Both Ramaz and KJ embrace diversity. That means we are supportive of the many different kinds of Jews out there. Your fellow classmates are a microcosm of the different kinds of Jews in society at large: some may be more observant and some may be less observant. However, regardless of the way Judaism is practiced at home, there is a certain compliance to halakhah we would expect from people who come into the shul and school buildings. The way one dresses in our buildings should reflect the values of the Torah learning that goes on in our buildings. That is why there is a dress code for our students and why visitors should respect house rules. Men should wear kippot when in the building and women should dress modestly. As you will come to understand as you grow older, children pick up not just their parents’ verbal cues: they learn from their behavior, also. “Do as I say, not as I do” is not necessarily a sound educational policy. EFFY BRAUN, KJ’S NEW YOUTH DIRECTOR: HIS ENTHUSIASM IS CONTAGIOUS

Dear KJ Youth Department Parents, Your children may tune out the hymns of the Cantor/You may not be able to tune out the children’s banter/You’ll all be pleased to hear/The KJ Youth Program is once again near/Another great year begins this fall/We’re all looking forward to having a ball! Rosh Hashanah marks the beginning of the New Year 5771. A new staff marks the beginning of the 5771 KJ youth program. The month of Elul is a time of transition when we think about the past year with gratitude for our accomplishments and pray that the year ahead brings new success. On behalf of KJ, I would like to thank Eytan Zadoff for his superb service these past four years as the KJ Youth Department Director. Eytan’s commitment and talent were key ingredients to our dynamic, enriching program, and we wish him well in his pursuit of a teaching career in academia. As the KJ Youth Department begins a new and exciting year, I am delighted to introduce myself as the new KJ Youth Department Director. My name is Effy Braun, and I have been engaged in the exhilarating field of education for over four years. As a graduate of Yeshiva University, my career in education commenced as the Advisor/Office Manager of the Y.U. Jewish Studies Department. My immersion in education continued as the Assistant Director of Student Activities at Magen David, the Syrian community’s premier Modern Orthodox High School with more than 620 students, and I am returning as the Director of Student Activities at the Ramaz Middle School. I am thrilled to be a part of the professional KJ staff and I am looking forward to building upon the Youth Department’s past accomplishments and overseeing a year of new programs and electrifying events. Assisting me will be a cadre of veteran and talented staff including experienced post college, college-aged, and high school youth leaders who share my passion for Jewish education. In addition, our religious Zionist Bnei Akiva program will continue to thrive under the new leadership of the talented team of Tamar Taitelbaum and Tzipporen Yoely. This year’s KJ Youth program features a fun-filled array of new and familiar events geared to harness the enthusiasm and interest of children from Nursery through 7th grade. Our line-up includes a rooftop barbecue, Super Bowl party, Purim carnival, hockey, basketball and softball sports leagues, Oneg Shabbat dinners, Shabbat Morning groups, Saturday night Mishnah learning and ice cream jamborees with Rabbi Soloveichik, Saturday night open gym, Shabbatons, and more! The key ingredient to our successful Youth Department is your children, and together we will have a sensational year! 5771 YOUTH DEPARTMENT FALL SCHEDULE For Information Sept. 4 Shabbat Morning Groups Begin Nov. 12 Tot Shabbat Family Dinner Sept. 11 Bnei Akiva Snif Begins Nov. 13 Fall Youth Shabbaton about the weekly status Oct. 10 KJHL Commences Nov. 14 KJHL Oct. 10 Season Opening Rooftop Nov. 16 Parent Forum of the Manhattan Eruv Bar-B-Q Bash Nov. 20 Family Mishnayot Learning Oct. 17 KJHL with Rabbi Meir Soloveichik Call the ERUV HOTLINE Oct. 24 KJHL for grades 2-4 Oct. 31 KJHL Nov. 21 KJHL/ Closing Party 212-874-6100, ext. 452 Nov. 7 KJHL Dec. 5 KJBL Commences Nov. 6 Tot Shabbat (Recorded Message) KEHILATH JESHURUN BULLETIN Page 15
