BOSTON (UPI) - Medical researchers who two years ago concluded that Vitamin C may be an excellent remedy for the common cold now claim the vitamin may be almost useless. The researchers based their new findings on the results of a 18-week study in 1974 among 868 Navajo Indian children in Steam boat and Lower Greasewood, Ariz. The children lived at two boarding schools where colds were known'to run high. The results of the tests published in this week's edition of the New England Journal of Medicine in dicated Vitamin C showed “no evidence of prophylac tic or therapeautic poten- , tial.” The researchers said the new test was conducted to “evaluate earlier obser vations." The children were in structed tb consume two tablets per day, or a total V of 1,000 milligrams. Proponents of Vitamin C, however, ciaim this dosage is too low to be effective. The children did not know whether they were taking Vitamin C or fake pills. The observers found that the children who took the real tablets came down with just as many cold symptoms as the children who did not. “More specifically, we were unable to show that « Vitamin C prevents com plicate respiratory infec tions...,” the researchers wrote; “We also found no sup port for the hypothesis that Vitamin C preferentially ameliorates certain symp toms” of the common cold, the researchers said.
