Q: What Is The Wayback Machine? Have you ever wanted to look up some information that you once saw on the Internet but found that it is no longer there? That web page, or the entire website, probably was deleted from the Internet. The Wayback Machine might be able to find it for you. Over 335 billion web pages have been archived by an organization that manages a website called archive.org. Internet Archive is a non- profit organization that is dedicat- ed to maintaining a digital library of the Internet. Using their app, called The Wayback Machine, information can be retrieved from the library by entering keywords or a website address. The Way- back Machine's name is a refer- ence the Rocky and Bullwinkle TV cartoon show, in which Mr. Peabody and Sherman used their time-traveling machine (the WA- BAC) to travel back in time for a lesson in history. Inevitably they managed to change important his- tory while they were there. I used the archive program to look for a website that I had set up in 2005. I had deactivated the site in 2011. I was surprised to find my website in the archive, com- pletely intact. There were snap- shots of the website over time, so I was able to see the changes that occurred over a number of years. In addition to websites, the archive now has videos, books, music, photos, news stories and audio recordings. A new feature on the archive.org site allows individuals to submit website information to the archive. The Wayback Machine start- ed collecting history in 1996. From 1996 until 2001, the infor- mation was stored on digital tape. The archives are now hosted on the campus of Sun Microsystems in California. The volume of the data is now around 30 petabytes and growing rapidly. A petabyte is 1,000 terabytes, or one quadril- lion bytes. The website operates worldwide but is blocked from use in China and Russia. This article was provided by Joe Stukey, of the Stukey Group.
