THE JAVELINA MEN’S basketball team barely missed getting a headline-grabbing win over NCAA Division I and Southeastern Conference member Texas A&M Friday night in College Station. The Javelinas had a lead over the Aggies mid-way through the first half, was within a point with 14:48 left in the game and was within three points with 15 seconds remaining in the contest. The Javelinas outscored the Aggies, 40-35, in the second half. The final score was 81-74. The game pitted two head coaches who have degrees from Texas A&M-Kingsville. Javelina head men’s coach Johnny Estelle played for the Javelinas and A&M head coach Buzz Williams is a former Javelina assistant coach and has his master’s degree from TAMUK. Williams said after the game that it is the first time he has had a team play an exhibition contest and he did it because of Estelle. The connection through TAMUK extends to Williams’ family. He is married to former Javelina basketball player Corey Norman who he met while in Kingsville.
