Calderdale Sound Women Network

‘The Valley’ - Open Call for new sound based or musical works

Calderdale Sound Women Network are pleased to announce the launch of a new music / sound-based project: ‘The Valley’. The project, which has received Arts Council England funding, involves a number of workshops and artistic opportunities over the coming months.

We are looking for two artists or artist collaborations1 to develop new works inspired by the Upper Calder Valley2, and perform or show these works at a concert to be hosted at a local venue in November 2019. Inspiration for proposed works can derive from any aspect of the Upper Calder Valley’s culture and/or environment that sparks your creativity.

Eligibility

To be eligible all applicants must be aged 18 or above, live in the Upper Calder Valley and identify as female or non-binary.

The call is aimed at artists who work in sound or music who may be at an early stage in their artistic practice, or at a more developed stage and wishing to take their work to the next level. We particularly welcome applications from older people who have not previously considered working in a professional context, or who have felt development opportunities were limited, or not open to them.

The form of any creative output can be fixed or live sound or music of any genre and may include visual elements. The culmination of ‘The Valley’ project is a concert so artists’ focus should be on creating work which can be successfully shown or performed live as part of this concert.

Support

The two successful applicants / collaborations will:

• Each have access to a budget of up to £250 for materials, resources, mentoring and travel costs • Each receive a fee of £150 for performance of their creative output at the winter concert

1 Whilst the call is open to individual artists we are also interested proposals that take the form of collaborations of up to three people. Please note however, funding is limited to that available to a single artist, so would need to be shared amongst collaborators.

2 For the purpose of this open call the Upper Calder is defined as the catchment area from Portsmouth in the West, downstream to , including the towns of , , , , Luddenden and Ripponden.

• Have the opportunity to attend a number of free workshops taking place over the summer and early autumn. The focus of these workshops may be creative or technical, with creative outputs from the workshops also being performed at the November concert alongside the outputs from this open call.
