MERIT AWARD Gerwd Cross PRESTOENT'S REPORT

Well, what a year of achieving little rewards except for the Seniors reaching the One Day Final and the Cavaliers spectacular victory in winning their grade. Little could be said of the other teams. Come on guys more practice, application and motivation to want to play cricket. Enough said on this. More improvements required for the 1996/97 season.

Looking ahead on the positive side approvals have been given or are well down the track for the Indoor Cricket Facility adjacent to the park and this should be in use in the New Year. Many thanks to Dennis Rea for his sterling efforts in achieving this. A new kitchen is on the agenda when funds become available and further improvements to the Pavilion are getting closer but we will only do a bit at a time.

Junior numbers are still very strong and they continue to provide a solid backing for the Club both financially and in support of the Seniors.

Many thanks to the Committee Members who slogged their guts out doing the work of many by so few. Many thanks to the Ground Staff and associates, and also to Jack Haglund up to his unwelcome illness but his good health is back and we wish you all the best.

The Club is in a reasonable sound financial position even though at the time of writing no money had been received from our Sponsors, The Hotel Russley. We hope sponsorship is going to play a bigger part next season but the Treasurer may enlighten you more is any of these have been confirmed.

Playing numbers appear to be a little down for next season so if you hear of any guys looking to change Clubs encourage them to come along. Club spirit still needs lifting so player participation at after match functions is required as well as additional ideas in this area from the players and supporters.

Once again many thanks to all Club Members for last season and we look forward to bigger and brighter results next season.

Once again the Junior Club of the Bumsidc West University Cricket Club had an extremely successful year with numbert maintained at or around 600 players with 50 teams in the Kiwi, Junior Average, Junior Traditional and Senior Traditional Grades.

With » large number of teams it is always difficult to obtain enough coaches and we rely heavily on parents' support. I am pleased to say that once again excellent support was received from the parents in this regard, not only in a coaching role but management spheres and also participating in the running of the pavilion shop on Saturdays.

Coaching for the players was also provided by Wayne Noon, whilst the services of Ben Harris was used to speak to the coaches on two occasions. Thanks should also go to Katrina Withers and Alan Stroud for speaking to the coaches at our end of year function.

Fundraising was particularly successful and our thanks go to Dave Biddick whose efforts in organising the sale of chocolates has raised a large amount for the club and also Kevin Adamson in organising the sponsored run day.

Good progress has been made with the development of the indoor practice facility in the former nursery building. Funding is now in place and consents are being applied for and hopefully the structure will be in use in the early part of the 96/97 season.

A new grading system, based on age, will be introduced in the 96/97 season and at the end of this past season the Committee undertook a grading day for those players returning in the former Senior Traditional Grades. Our goal as a Committee is to try and grade as many players as possible to ensure that players are placed in teams of an equal ability and accordingly in the correct grade on Saturdays.

Finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank the hard working Committee of which I had the pleasure to chair. This is the first year we had our new Secretary in Paul McGirr and we are grateful for his endless hours in undertaking much of the administration work for the Committee. I would also like to take this opportunity once again to thank all coaches, managers and parents for their support of the Junior Section of the Club which continues to thrive.

Congratulations to Andy Leonard who broke the Canterbury record for most dismissals in a season in the Trustbank Cup with 23 dismissals. The previous record was 20 held by Paul Rutledge of St Albans set in 1984-85. Our previous club record was 15 held by Kevin Collias and also set in 1984-85. Andy actually missed a match and Way ne Noon deputising with the gloves made 2 dismissals. Andy is in his first season with the club having been a Nelson representative. He also had a good season with the bat and ended up captaining the senior side for the last few games.

Andy's brother, Dave, is well known to cricket enthusiasts having played 43 Trophy plus 25 Cup games for CD and is still playing for Nelson. He also has a link to Bumside Park as in the only first class game at Burnside Park he look 6-67 which were the best bowling figures in the match.

It was good to see the Nelson influence back at the club with Darren Thomason and Campbell Ogilvie playing for the club. Darren is a former CD under 20 player and played for Nelson in their defence of the Xerox cup during the season replacing an injured former NZ rep Mark Douglas. Campbell who played a Press Tournament game for the seniors is a brother of the CD player John Ogilvie.

In the second round of the Trustbank Cup Competition High School Old Boys were bowled out for 75. This is HSOB lowest score in the Trustbank Cup. The main destroyers were Mark Hastings with 4/9 and Ben Sharp on his senior debut with 4/31.

During the season both Jason Nuttall and Wayne Noon took 3 catches in a innings and 4 in a match. These were the equal best in the competition for the season. Interestingly they are the only catches Jason has made in 9 Tmstbank Trophy games. Unmentioned last year was the fact that Steve Hawker was equal first in 1994-95 with identical figures.

Hamish Kember's 6/14 was the best overall Trustbank Cup performance of the season and Graeme White's 5/16 the third best overall Trustbank Cup figures for the season.

From the Cricket department, where cricket is a funny and sometimes painful game comes the story of one Simon Packman. He had scored 9 wins at an average 1.8 in his 5 Trophy innings of the season. Having been made aware of this prior to his next innings against HSOB and a more than useful attack he strode purposefully to the and scored his first senior century (102). Then broke his thumb while batting the next week.

Wayne Noon and Alan Hickford registered the seniors only 2 century partnerships of the season in consecutive weeks. They put on 139 in 94 minutes against Lancaster Park on 27 January and 105 in 80 minutes against Woolston WMC the following Saturday. Both were for the 4th wicket. They were the 3rd and 7th highest partnerships in the Cup Competition during the season. The Trophy game against Sydenham at Sydenham Park was abandoned without a ball being bowled. Coincidently the same thing happened two years ago when the team was last due to play a Trophy game at Sydenham Park.

During the season there were several instances of 2, 3 or 4 wickets falling very quickly. The best or worst collapses were 5/6 v St Albans, 7/14 v Old Colleges and 7/4 v Woolston WMC., (in this innings we lost 5/0 and 6/1).

In his senior debut Adrian McFedries scored 29 in both innings and had bowling figures of 0/Z1 and 3/21.

Hamish Kembers 6/14 v Sydenham means he now has the clubs best and second best bowling figures in Trustbank Cup Cricket. His 21 wickets in the season are our 3rd best.

Mark Hastings 7/25 was the 3rd best overall Trophy bowling figure for the season.

Other good performances in Trustbank Cup Cricket; Alan Hickford was 3rd overall in both the batting aggregates and averages and Hamish Kember was second in the bowling averages and 3rd in the aggregates. Andy Leonards 4 dismissals in an innings was the second highest. Of bowlers who bowled more than 30 overs Hamish Kember was the third most economical with Mark Hastings 4th and Russell Haglund 5th on the list.

Our loss in the Trustbank Cup final means we have lost 3 finals in a row now. The New Zealand club champs, the Press final and Trustbank Cup final. This is the first time we have played in the Trustbank Cup final and lost.

Other clubs must still be envious of our record in the Trustbank Cup. 15 starts for 8 wins, 3 seconds, 2 thirds and 2 fifths. Senior Player Averages 1995-96 Season Trust Bank Trophy (2 Day)

We had a good start and a good ending to the season. What happened in between leaves room for improvement. The season had it's controversies with Allan Piper resigning half way through the season and major protest over the one day win over Lancaster Park. With only myself and Rob Wilson-Pyne playing all the games in second grade. It was hard to keep the continuity throughout the team.

There was some promising players coming through the ranks, in batting, Jarrod Gaunter and Mark Lumsden. In the bowling, Ben Sharp, Dominic Maxwell and Kristian Nuttall with his lcflarm spin stood out. Steady performances from Ruben Levennore. Campbcll Oglive. Jason Nuttall and Rob Wilson-Pyne in the bowling department, backed up by the batting of Andrew Condon, Paul Hancox, Simon Packman and Johnny Shore enabled us to finish in mid-table.

We now have the base for a very competitive team for next season and I will be looking forward to the challenges awaiting us. I hope you all have good winters and we will see you all again next season. CHRIS GRANT

Disappointment is probably an understatement to describe the third grade performance this season. Other many more appropriate words could be used to describe some of the events that transpired. Indeed, it is questionable whether most of the team could be bothered playing cricket this season. One of last seasons gripes was the high turnover of players through the team - 37. This season the tally topped 50. This was as a direct result of the attitude of some players to their cricket. Some Saturdays certain individuals could not be bothered, placing tremendous strain on playing resources. Those who could be bothered soon lost interest as the season wore on, and who could blame them?

We even had the almost unbelievable situation of players disappearing during playing hours to watch pre-season Rugby League matches. It is quite inconceivable to me how anyone could have the gumption to even think to do that. There were however moments when the team did get together, but these occasions hardly lasted a session, never mind a days play. Consequently, we finished at the foot of the table, and deserved no better. Perhaps the wide variety of things to do these days mean that commitment to a days cricket is too hard. If that is the case then it is a sad state of affairs. Individuals will never experience the thrill of pulling together as a team to reach a goal.

On a performance front, there was no individual that really rates a mention. Some of those that performed were let down by their attitude. Those that made a commitment to the team and the club, seldom performed. Not really a whole helluva lot more to say is there?

I must first apologise for not including any team stats in this report as I was expecting to be in the UK fulfilling my contract as overseas pro for the Ilford 2ndXI, not enjoying the depths of the Christchurch winter.

Unfortunately, for Fourth Grade this year it was a case of the results not reflecting the competitiveness of the team. We were unlucky on three occasions not to get the outright win we deserved. However, we did have deficiencies in the batting and fielding department and on several occasions the old catches win matches adage applied.

Batting was a problem this year as the top five were consistently unable to get enough runs quickly enough. There were some good efforts from Neil and Jason Carmont was the most improved player of the year. Stu McCall was our highest run getter batting in the middle and after Xmas especially he made some good scores. There were also some spectacular moments from Andrew Little.

Bowling was probably our strong point this year, in particular Ben Bernard. Ben consistently bowled with pace an aggression and was probably one the grades best bowlers. He was our top wicket taker and could have had more with better catching an umpiring. Stu McCall also bowled well and at times his inswingers were lethal. Andrew Jefferies and Andrew Little also made valuable contributions in the cowling department. After Xmas Karl Officer made his presence felt with his left armers.

Glen had a very good seawn with the gloves and took some spectacular catches. Also making contributions were James Callaghan, Matt Chapple and Richard Boume.

I wish to thank the team for their efforts during the year and in particular Andrew Jefferies for valuable advice and taking over of the captaincy duties when I was unavailable. I wish the team good luck for the upcoming season.

With the team now in its second year of involvement in this competition we now have an idea of what competition we were up against and what Saturday afternoons consisted of. Our Saturdays would involve such things as getting out of bed at midday, rush to the TAB and pub and get in a few sighters. Get to the ground early, say five past one, try and psyche the opposition out, win the toss, bat and score 300, bowl the opposition out for 100, get to the pub early, lie to the wives and giriftiends about what time we got there, tell more lies to each other and go home rotten. If we were a good team this could have happened but most of the dme, if we scored a run, didn't drop a catch and didn't get smacked around while bowling - we had a successful day. All team members participated in these activities as we were a team of all Founders. Most opposition sides were built around individuals who were able to relivc past memories of their senior days and take advantage of our inexperience and enthusiasm of seeing a ball go over the boundary. It they batted first we hoped teams would get at least 250 runs, as it gave us something to chase. Mind you any total was hard enough to chase. The team is already building towards the new season, player recruitment schemes, contracts. Cancelling of contracts is well under way. As we did last year the scorebook was burnt so everyone starts with a clean slate.

We do have a rundown on the star performers (rom the 1995/96 sixthgrade side.

Wal (Wonderboy) Perriam: Team player of the year, we don't know why, but took the brunt of criticism, never backed down, always performed - not. Squid Scott: Team psycho, has a head problem and a drinking problem, doesn't drink enough. Paddy Leader: Mark Greatbatch has taken many dps from him, but Loads is still looking to give him one dp. Duckman Geddes: As the name suggests, got more ducks than any player in sixth grade history. This year he had to drink the night before cricket. Gilly McGUliyray: Had a nightmare season. Transferred out of country he thought, but doesn't know that the boys all chipped in for the ticket. Rowdy Hardmg: The quiet achiever got a few personal milestones, next year he won't - the boys will make sure of that. Whoppa Harding: More injuries than ten seasons of rugby put together. Has to harden up or his contract will be torn up. Verge Lawson: Player of the year in his own mind, wants to be , selector, and Manager. He has to come up with some big payments, not that I want to be bribed. Whitsy Whittaker: Didn't perform at all, only a shade of his previous seasons form, has to give up work. Manu Sprotti: Must deal with a lot of Asians in Real Estate, as has bowled more Chinamen's in a year than would sell to in a lifetime. Make Ale Lake: The elder statesman of the side, keeps performing both on and off the field. Will marriage change this man? Bat, Tilby, Hammy, Bren, Goff: All played when needed and took the hard knocks and drunk more than their share. As the assistant player manager of the side I can only wish for a better year. I'm sure the results can improve with more pre-season signings and during season exercising of the elbows. To the Cavaliers, congrats on a championship win and we wish all other members the best for the coming season. See you then.

TURNS TURNER CAVALIERS TEAM REPORT by Chris Kennedy

The season started with a good core of regular and very experienced players. With such a glamour side, we often had players clamouring to join our ranks, (apart from the days when we couldn't field a full side!)

Our most regular players were :-

Geoff Longley - opening bat who had some excellent innings, especially early in the season. Specialist third man and a long leg.

Stu Cooke - our own Kaluwirtharana and keeper who took some sharp ttfcumping chances.

Dave Robertson - valuable new recruit, who often "crashed" the opposition bowlers. Solely responsible for Hintzy's retirement form Cavs after mauling his bowling.

Grant Dickson - another top run-scorer who coped admirably after his promotion from seniors. Another budding 'keeper.

Chris Kennedy - team captain (plus tactician and motivatori), so was able to open the batting, bowling. Voted team M.V.P, (only 'cause I counted the votes).

Julian Van Dyke - express opening bowler. His aggressive and commitment unsurpassed and inspirational. Cavaliers most long-serving player.

Bay Burgess - super express down-wind bowler. Most economical bowler and regularly picked up early wickets.

Steve Hawker - first change bowler ('cause he's slower than Burg!) Most expensive bowlerf!) but also top-wicket-taker with 37 for the season. Did a top job in organising a playing Xl (or X) each Saturday. Well done Hawks, "let's do it again".

Hamish Caleder - team's most regular fill-in player, who filled in at short notice so often, that he played more games than the regulars! Many thanks, Hamish.

Thanks also the those who gave cameo appearances, including Stephen Jeffery who scored 126 n/o to be awarded the W.R. McLean Trophy for the highest score in the club. Also Sticky Barrett, who decimated opposition batting sides. Plus the multitudes who fitted in for us, thank you. The grade was again competitive, and there were numerous sided vying for the top position towards the end of the season. Many close games produced nail-biting and teeth grindingly tense finishes, of which we came to win more than our fair share.

For the first time, in the history of the grade, Burnside-West was the competition winner. I would like to dedicate our win to the memory of long serving Cavaliers players, the late Skip Marks, whose deeds on and off the field were inspirational.

Many thanks to the team for your support during the season.

A season which started with a narrow loss quickly became a string of losses broken only by a solitary pre-Xmas win. Santa was generous though and the New Year brought a change of fortune with rix wins in the last ten games leaving us in the middle of the table.

Typical Presidents form was displayed with honest endeavour punctuated by flashes of brilliance and moments of incptncss. The main problem was stringing together enough good batting performances to establish or chase reasonable totals. The batters did not have that little bit of good fortune needed to get their season off to a good start. Mid-season blues included a more than usual number of injuries, even by the standards of "old man's cricket" . The season was enjoyable though with the team finishing well and most members having high points to look back upon.

David Fox produced some solid peribnnances with the bat. David's new glasses may have had something to do with the red marks bring closer to the middle of the bat. Chris Cunninghame seldom failed with either bat or ball, the only pity being his unavailability for much of the season. Brycc McKenzie is a welcome addition to the team. He contributed in all aspects but particularly with the bat, finishing with an average of over eighty in the last five innings. John Edmondson, back after "premature" retirement, found form a little elusive but still managed a couple of good scores. John Gilson finished the season well with a sixty and was always valuable in the field. Murray Jones, by his own high standards, had a poor time with the bat but condnued to perform well in the outfield and was a very good back-up keeper in absence of Robbie Chisholm. Robbie's season was cut short by injury and he was sorely missed. Apart from his batting skills he is one of the best keepers in the grade. Mike Keen was the best all rounder averaging fortyfour with the bat and taking twentyone wickets. "Modest" Mike was also good value in the field. Bobby Shorter, an ever reliable opening bowler, bowled the most overs and was treated with respect by all batters. Bowler of the season was Eric White. Eric took twentynine wicket at eighteen apiece. His left ami slow was the perfect foil to the otherwise medium pace attack. Eric has accumulated more wickets than most and his "bowlometer" is on its second dme around the clock. Mike Atkins played to few games but his enthusiasm and outfield work were particularly appreciated. A warm welcome to Graham Bezett who played the last five games and his nine wickets at an average of seven promise well for the coming season. Thanks to Paul O'Grady, Warren Porter and Grahame Barrett who played as needed. We would welcome you as fuU-timers. Thanks to Vincent Orange whose respect for and love of the game is an example to all of us.

Congratulations to Bryce McKenae, the captain for '96-'97. We hope our bodies will carry us through another year.
