Community Newsletter Week of August 19 - 23 2019 A publication of the City of Dodge City Public Information Office 1. The City of Dodge City offices will be closed in observance of the Labor Day holiday on Monday, September 2nd. Public Transportation will not be running the buses on Monday but will resume regular hours on Tuesday. The Convention & Visitors Bureau’s Visitor Center will be open Saturday, Sunday & Monday from 8:30 am to 6:30 pm, and will resume fall/winter hours from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Mon.-Fri. beginning Tuesday the 3rd. Sanitation collection normally scheduled for Monday will be serviced on Tuesday. Residents are asked to have polycarts placed at the curb by 7:00 am. The CREW recycling center will be closed but will be open regular hours on Saturday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. The recycle bins at the Civic Center and recycle center are available at all times for drop-off. Have a safe, enjoyable Labor Day holiday. 2. The Dodge City Convention and Visitors Bureau would like to better understand how people make travel and vacation decisions — and what people like to do on vacation. Take the 5-minute Dodge City Travel Survey https://forms.gle/zSru2EMGJHJYqaBT9 As a reward for taking the survey, they will send a voucher for one free gift the next time you 'Get The Heck INTO Dodge' and visit the Dodge City Visitor Information Center. Participants should receive the voucher within a week of entry. 3. There will be a change in the sanitation route Wednesday, August 28th, on 9th Ave from West Division to . Trash and grass will be picked up on Thursday, August 29th, rather than Wednesday, August 28th. Crews ask that residents in these areas still have their trash karts out by 7 AM at the curb. If necessary, sanitation crews will walk to the curb of areas affected by the asphalt construction. 4. Mariah Hills was busy this past weekend hosting back to back tournaments on Friday and Saturday. On Friday 80 golfers played in the annual DCCC Foundation Tournament and on Saturday 108 ladies participated in the Tee' d Off At Cancer Tournament.

5. Dodge City was the host destination for several events this week. The Kanas Library System Retreat came into Dodge City on Wednesday for their meetings that went until Friday. The Kansas Dental Association arrived on Friday for the men to have a round of golf and the woman to have a day on the town with the trolley before their meetings on Saturday. The KGA High Plains Amature Golf Tournament teed off Friday the 23rd and will run to Sunday the 25th, with the KGA Senior Series on Monday the 26th. 6. Dodge City Convention and Visitors Bureau Assistant Director Collen Hastings is leading the group in preparation for the Kansas State Fair, which is only a couple weeks away. Dodge City will be hosting their annual booth in the Pride of Southwest Kansas building from September 6- 15. The ten-day event is an excellent promotion for Dodge City. 7. City staff and Dodge City/Ford County Development Corporation staff attended the Ford County Community Coalition (FCCC) this week. The purpose of the Coalition is to serve as a forum for the advancement of community health through the networking of government, civic service, and business organizations. The group is currently focusing on distributing the Ford County Health Assessment Survey. More information on this survey is attached at the end of the newsletter. To learn more about the FCCC call 620-227-4542 or email [email protected]. 8. The Sixth Annual Sport Modified Mayhem Event will be held this Saturday at Dodge City Raceway Park. In addition to the incredible racing action, a lucky fan could win $1500 during the evening. Someone’s ticket will be drawn with the opportunity to roll three dice. Each roll is worth $500 with three successful rolls netting $1500. General admission for Saturday’s Sixth Annual Sport Modified Mayhem event is just $15 with children 11 and under admitted free when accompanied by an adult. City staff, along with several community members attended the Plains Medical Center Lunch and Learn on Wednesday. Jessica Calvo, M.D. provided a presentation on Juvenile Suicide. Melissa McCoy, Assistant City Manager, participated in the Kansas Business Hall of Fame quarterly board meeting this week. During the meeting, the board heard updates on the remodeling and capital campaign for the Kansas Business Hall of Fame as well as the Strategic Plan review and nomination process for new board members. The KBHF honors business leaders from the past and present and also works to inspire youth to seek out careers in business. 12. Ford County Community Assessment (FCCA)

• This assessment, a collaboration of Ford County K-State Research and Extension, Ford County Health Department, Western Plains Medical Ford County Complex and Hospice of the Prairie will give this coalition of partners, Community from varying human services, a look at the health and well-being of Coalition Ford County individuals and families. • The primary goal of the FCCA is to identify the relationship between the needs, assets, and demographics in communities. Also, we strive EXECUTIVE BOARD to make this information available to service organizations (data for AGENCIES writing grants, providing resources, etc.)

Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame

The Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame Committee requests nominations of living or deceased individuals for consideration for induction into the Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame.

Any organization or individual may nominate a qualified person for consideration. The Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame Committee meets annually to evaluate and determine inductees.

See below for nomination forms or they may be requested through Boot Hill Museum, Inc., Front Street, Dodge City, Kansas 67801. Forms must be received by September 3, 2019 for induction consideration for 2019. Individuals or organizations nominating a person(s) are requested to submit supplementary supporting information. Any materials submitted will be stored within the Boot Hill Museum, Inc. files and will not be returned to the nominating individuals or organizations.

Nominated inductees will be evaluated and selected by a majority vote of the Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame Committee. No more than one award from each category will by inducted annually.

The 2019 induction ceremony will take place at Cowboy Capital Saloon and Grill (formerly Guymon-Petro), Dodge City, on Saturday, November 9, 2019. The Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame Awards will be presented to the honoree, or to a designated representative.

1 Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame Criteria for Inductees

Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame inductee will be selected after the evaluation of the following: 1. Significant contributions to the western heritage lifestyle, past or present, and to the preservation of the cowboy culture in Kansas. 2. Personifies the cowboy ideals of integrity, honesty, and self- sufficiency. 3. Achievement of state-wide historic significance. 4. Native and/or resident of Kansas.

Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame Inductees will be honored in the following five categories:

Working Cowboy The Working Cowboy or Cowgirl is an individual whose primary lifetime occupation is in the cattle industry or related field. They earn a paycheck for a job well done, as a feed yard cowboy, a ranch hand/foreman, a horse trainer or related job.

Rodeo Cowboy The Rodeo Cowboy or Cowgirl participates or contributes to the sport of rodeo. Rodeo participants, rodeo clowns, announcers, producers, promoters, stock contractors or similar, that have excelled in competition or advancement of the sport will be considered for Rodeo Cowboy.

Rancher/Cattleman The Rancher/Cattleman is the proprietor of a business that directly relates to the ranching/livestock industry. This individual has excelled in the production and stewardship of cattle, horses, or sheep on our native range lands or feed yards of Kansas.

Cowboy Historian The Historian is an individual that serves as a guardian of the authentic story of the American/Kansas Cowboy. Their efforts have been directed towards recording, preserving and sharing the Kansas Cowboy’s history and history of the Old West. This individual may be an author, curator, storyteller, researcher, scholar or educator.

Cowboy Entertainer/Artist The Cowboy Entertainer/Artist is an individual or group, male or female that promotes the cowboy lifestyle through their art or craft. These may include singer/songwriter, artist/craftsman, painter/sculptor, saddle/boot maker, performer, producer, TV/movie personality or other related activities.

Application Procedure

Please send the following with each document clearly identified with the nominee’s name.

 A completed nomination form  A letter(s) of nomination – submit at least one and not more than five  A detailed biography  Copies of supporting material i.e. newspaper clippings, magazine articles, awards or photos. Each piece of supporting material must be clearly marked with the name of the nominee. Copies are recommended. All original material sent will be considered a donation and will be held in the files at Boot Hill Museum.

Enjoy a special guest appearance by Huascar Medina during the Dodge City International Festival on Sunday, Sept. 15th, 2019. Medina will read some of his poems and take part in other events during the International Festival. The poetry reading will feature original works by Medina written specially for the “Faces of the East Side Neighborhoods” portrait exhibit being held in partnership with the International Festival.

Huascar Medina, the first Latino and first person of color to become Poet Laureate of the State of Kansas is coming to Dodge City. Over the next two years, Medina will tour the state using his theme 'May Our Voices Ring True' as a starting place to discuss what it means to be a Kansan — particularly a Latino Kansan.
