Locust situation (Sources: PPQ&S, DAC&FW)

LOCUST SITUATION: During the 1st fortnight of February, 2020, Immature/maturing/mature swarms/adult groups were observed in the Jaisalmer, Barmer, Jodhpur, Sriganganagar of Rajasthan and Fazilka of Punjab. Out of 120 nos. of survey spots, control operations were undertaken at 63 localities covering 11290 ha area.

WEATHER AND ECOLOGY: No rainfall occurred in the SDA. Soil moisture observed dry except Suratgarh. vegetation is drying in the SDA whereas green in the cropped areas of Suratgarh and few localities of Phalodi and Bhuj.

FAO Update (10 Feburary) : Breeding continues in the Horn of Africa, which will cause locusts to increase further in Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya with new swarms forming in March and April. Consequently, there is an unprecedented threat to food security and livelihoods in the region.

SWAC : In South-West Asia, a few residual summer-bred swarms appeared in northwest Pakistan and there were reports of locusts in the interior of Baluchistan near Kharan. Swarm breeding is on progress along parts of the southern coast of Iran.

FORECAST (India): The low density maturing/mature residual population is now restricted within a limited areas of Sriganganagar (Rajasthan) and Fazilka (Punjab) adjoining to the Indo-Pak border. Situation is expected to be calm by coming days. However, strict vigilance will be continued.

Animal Husbandry advisory (Source: Pashupalak calendar (FEBURARY), the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India)

 During this month there is rainfall in a number of places. Adequate measures should be taken to protect the animals from the wet weather, as well as the drop in temperature when the skies clear after the rain.

 All suggestions provided during the last month for protection of the animals against cold and inclement weather may be practiced this month too.

 The controlled breeding programme for animals should continue in the month of February so that all participating animals become pregnant during this month.

 All new-born animals should be dewormed.

 Lambs/kids should be vaccinated against PPR.

 To prevent Mastitis in dairy cattle, they should be milked completely.

 Fodder crops of Alfalfa and Berseem Clover as well as Oats should be irrigated every 12 – 14 and 18 – 20 days respectively.

 Berseem Clover and Alfalfa should be dried and stored as dry fodder or converted into silage for use during times of low or no green fodder availability.
