jazzweek.com • Dec. 26, 2005 JazzWeek 5 News ‘The Great Guitars’ Taped for Telarc Signs Chicago’s Legends of Jazz April B’cast Liquid Soul for May 2006 Label Debut

CLEVELAND – Liquid Soul, the Chicago-bred combo that has built its reputation on a mix of jazz, hip-hop, funk and hard-bop, has signed with Telarc International. One- Two Punch, Liquid Soul’s Telarc debut, has a street date of May 23, 2006. Pioneers of the acid-jazz movement during their early days in the Chicago club scene of the mid-1990s, Liquid Soul has evolved over the past dozen years into a musi- cal compendium of sounds and styles that starts with jazz and embraces hip-hop, R&B, dance, funk, world, spoken- word and much more. The eight-piece collective is led by saxophonist/composer Mars Williams, who is looking to expand the band’s reach beyond the U.S. Since the group’s founding in 1994, Liquid Soul has toured in 42 U.S. states, and throughout Canada and Ja- pan, in addition to shows in Germany, Turkey and Mex- ico. Performances have included the Newport Jazz Festi- val, the 1997 presidential inaugural parade, the South by Southwest Festival and two tours opening for Sting. “Telarc is the kind of label that we wanted to build a relationship with,” said Williams. “They are the pioneers of an awesome digital sound, and they have a worldwide distribution system that could enhance our exposure be- yond North America. When Telarc first approached us, they had a good sense of what we were about, and they were very interested in what we were doing. That kind of interest and enthusiasm up front usually makes for a posi- Bill Richert tive relationship between an artist and a record label.” Pictured (L to R): , Ramsey Lewis and Jim Hall on the One-Two Punch will be Liquid Soul’s fifth recording set of the public television series, Legends Of Jazz. since its self-titled, mostly-live debut album in 1996. Looking Back On 2005 The Top 100 Jazz Albums of the Year based on Radio Airplay

by Tad Hendrickson

t’s that time of year where we pause a moment to look back on 2005 before collapsing from exhaustion. Last year was Itransitional one here at JazzWeek: the charts switched over from us diligently entering charts by hand each week to partner- ing with Mediaguide to give a wholly accurate survey of what’s getting playing at jazz stations around the country. From the ed- itorial perspective, I was only onboard from early November of last year, but went through the full cycle of 2005, riding it out with the rest of the jazz radio community. As I look back on this Top 100 list and pick it apart – year-end lists are like any annual report of how well records did – it’s a fun to stroll down memory lane, and hopefully this will remind you of some great albums from the year that was. It’s an impressive trio of top releases with two tributes to Ray Charles and one living and then posthumous one to Jimmy Smith. Each represents a huge jump up the year-end chart from the previous albums of 2004 by these artists. So sit back and enjoy! continued ... jazzweek.com • Dec. 26, 2005 JazzWeek 10 2005 Jazz Year In Review (continued)

Top Three Albums David “Fathead” Newman

I Remember Brother Ray (High Note) exas tenorman Newman ran with Brother Ray back in the day (1954-64), so there are a lot of good times Tto remember and honor with a tribute. They main- tained a lifelong friendship built on love and mutual re- spect (Charles called Newman “Brains” instead of “Fat- head”). Recorded just a few weeks after Charles died, all eight songs here are tunes the saxophonist originally re- corded with his old boss. Classics like “Hit The Road Jack” are included, but so are evergreens like “It Had To Be You,” which originally showed how broad a range Charles had. While the laidback quintet assembled here is firmly in the straight-ahead vein, Newman’s honking R&B roots shine through to add the necessary grit and grease to take this to the top of the charts. 2004’s Song For A New Man made it to 31. (Newman was also voted Instrumentalist of the Year and I Remember Brother Ray Album of the Year in 2005 by JazzWeek readers. – Ed.) Joey DeFrancesco w/ Jimmy Smith

Legacy (Concord Jazz) t wasn’t too long after Jimmy Smith’s appearance and performance with Joey D at IAJE that he passed away. IThe two organists’ first full-length studio collaboration together (and the follow up to the live album Incredible!), Legacy offers a survey of some of Smith’s greatest grooves and a few surprises as well. The recent gem “Dot Com Blues” is a terrific game of cat and mouse for the two or- ganists, while the ballad “I’ll Close My Eyes” has enough soul and gospel to double as an unofficial eulogy for Smith. The classic “Back At The Chicken Shack” had a bit of Lat- in flavor that added new wrinkle. One can only wonder where the inspiration for adding the electric sitar on the title cut came from. Incredible was an exceptional high-en- ergy affair, but this one matches that energy (you can even hear the guys grunting as they work at times) while also offering up an impressively original and varied vision of B3

jams. DeFrancesco’s 2004 effort, Plays Sinatra His Way, made it to 49.

John Scofield

That’s What I Say: John Scofield Plays The Music Of Ray Charles (Verve) ohn Scofield’s Ray Charles tribute wouldn’t seem to be the natural that Fathead’s was, but the one thing Jabout Sco is that he’s the funkiest and most soulful of the big jazz guitarists of today. It takes about 30 sec- onds of organ-trio opener “Busted” to allay any misgiv- ing cynics might have. Scofield sounds like his usual in- imitable self here, but props should also go to keyboardist Larry Goldings, who is one bad motha. The guitar great is also joined by an impressive support cast – Fathead, Ma- vis Staples, Dr. John and Warren Haynes appear, as does an uncredited Isaac Hayes – and the guests and players gave each of the 13 songs a unique feel. The zany version “What’d I Say” (which seems to have more guest slots than “We Are The World”) is balanced by the stark solo version of “Georgia On My Mind.” In between are a lot of programming options that radio really sunk its teeth into. Last year’s En Route made it to 59. The Top 10

hile last year’s Top 10 had an astounding six pianists as well as two sing- ers as leaders, 2005’s Top 10 is considerably more varied with six dif- Wferent types of instrumentalists leading groups. Surprisingly, the first singer on the chart doesn’t appear until Freddy Cole does at 14. While old hands like Jimmy Smith and Eddie Palmieri appear here, everyone was pretty excited about the young Eldar’s astounding debut (backed by some great live shows) and the young guns that Gary Burton (who returns to the top 10 for the second year in a row) brought to the party on Next Generation. I am wholly heartened to see Joe Lovano’s Joyous Encounter getting to the 10-spot after I bitched and moaned about 2004’s I’m All For You only making it to 35. Kudos to Lovano and Blue Note for going right back into the studio and recording another album by this amazing group.

Label Breakdowns and Numbers

f you think you get a lot of mail, you’re probably right – there were 579 albums reported this year, which is down from 660 in 2004. There were 48 different Ilabels (down from 51 last year) in the Top 100. HighNote maintained its su- premacy in 2005 while also getting the No. 1 album this year. Moving from 4 to 2, Concord made some serious inroads this year and released half of the Top 10 albums, and there would probably be one more if the label hadn’t screwed up the mailing for Good Night and Good Luck. With Concord’s recent purchase of Telarc, 2006 looks to find the label an even bigger powerhouse. Always a huge presence in the Top 10 in years past, Warner Bros. is an absence still felt. While most of the top labels hung tough, Palmetto only managed to get four albums on to the Top 100; but it’s worth noting that Palmetto’s Dr. Lonnie Smith probably would have been the top album if it hadn’t had its airplay split over two years.

Top Debut Eldar

Eldar (Sony Classical) f The Bad Plus was the “It” band of 2003, and Jamie Cullum’s rock star poses made him the jazz bad boy of 2004, Eldar Djangirov could Ibe the 21st answer to Art Tatum in 2005. With keyboard skills that dazzle to the point of overwhelming, Djangirov tosses off one impossi- bly fast run after another. One needs look no further than opener “Sweet Georgia Brown” to hear that velocity. Leaving listeners a chance towel off is always a good idea, and we like it when he slows it down as he does on “Round Midnight.” He’s also got a thing for spicing his playing – he’ll toss in some blues, as he does on “Moanin’” or some classical, as he does on “Nature Boy.” Of course he needs to mature, but damn!

As I See It

ometimes I think that jazz musicians and DJs are just a little too aware of history. The fact that the top three spots are all occupied by albums that Sare tributes (in one form or another) is something to think about. If jazz is to move forward, we have to be aware of what came before. That is true, but I’d like to see people study the past so as to not repeat it in the present or future. Yes, tributes are often heartfelt, but sometimes they are more of a marketing ploy by labels to cash in on the name of an artist much more popular or famous than the one leading the session. I have no problems with any of the top albums this year, but I’d like to see artists not leaning on the creative crutch. This music will only survive if the new music and new artists are supported. I’ll close as I always do with the same old axiom – program with your heart as well as your head. No one is going to get rich doing this, so be extra cre- ative and try and take chances with the music. If people don’t like something, they’ll let you know and you can take the feedback for what it’s worth. But may- be they’ll hear something like Eldar or Ron Blake for the first time and dig it. That’s it. A happy holiday to everyone. Peace, th
