SSSizewellSizewell B power station Monthly Newsletter Issue 5588887777 January 2016

Introduction

We are keen to hear the views of our local communities. We recognise that good communication is a two-way process and we welcome your feedback and comments. These reports are available to all members of the public on www.edfenergy.com.

Whilst we will do our best to always use plain English, talking about our business sometimes involves specific terminology, and you will find a glossary of any terms used at the end of each monthly report.

Safety

During the period of the report there have been:

• No injuries to employees • No nuclear reportable incidents • No environmental incidents

Station output

The station has operated at around full power during this period.

Please click on the link below that provides a daily update of the status of our eight nuclear power stations. The link will show which nuclear reactors are in service and what they were generating at the time the information was updated. You can also see which reactors are out of service, what the reasons are and when we expect them to return to service. In addition, we have included the expected timing of the next statutory outage of each nuclear reactor. http://www.edfenergy.com/energy/power-station/daily-statuses

EDF Energy leases new office in Bristol to support the Hinkley Point C project

EDF Energy has leased offices in Bridgewater House in Bristol to provide a base for a large part of its Hinkley Point C project team. Their work will support the construction of the proposed new nuclear power station in Somerset which will create thousands of jobs and boost the economy in the South-West.

Once fully mobilised, Hinkley Point C will be one of the largest and most complex major infrastructure projects in Europe. The offices in Bristol will be fitted out in the next few months.

EDF Energy has already invested in facilities in Somerset, including a new national training centre at Cannington Court and through its involvement in Bridgwater College's Construction Skills Centre.

Hundreds apply for apprentice places

Sites within EDF Energy’s generation fleet saw a late rush of applications for the 2016 apprentice recruitment programme.

The company saw more than 1270 applications for its 53 apprentice positions, spread across its eight nuclear power stations, and the coal and gas stations in Nottinghamshire.

The next stage for the successful applicants will be a series of assessments, followed by formal interviews.

Those offered a place will spend the first two years of the four-year training programme at HMS Sultan, near Portsmouth, before returning to their base stations.

Sizewell B and the Community

Sizewell B physicist teaches our teachers about nuclear energy

A nuclear physicist from Sizewell B is supporting the next generation of physics teachers at science lectures organised by the Prince’s Teaching Institute (PTI).

Colin Tucker, A nuclear safety engineer at EDF Energy’s Sizewell B power station, was asked to give new teachers in physics an introduction to nuclear energy.

The special sessions were organised in London and Birmingham by the PTI to enthuse and engage newly qualified physics teachers so they can bring the curriculum to life for their students and encourage the engineers of the future.

Colin is a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) ambassador for EDF Energy and regularly gives talks to students and teachers on the wonders of science. This passion led him to develop models of power stations and online tutorials of how the electricity grid works which have been used by Cambridge University. Colin’s latest invention is a science game accessible for primary schools students.

Leiston Heritage Uncovered

Specialists in historical architecture have uncovered rare original details of a historic listed farmhouse on EDF Energy’s land in Leiston, Suffolk.

Upper Abbey Farmhouse was damaged by fire in 2010 destroying the roof and much of the interior.

EDF Energy employed Leigh Alston, an architectural historian from Cambridge University, to conduct a heritage assessment of Upper Abbey Farmhouse before sensitively undertaking restoration work necessary following fire damage.

EDF Energy has enlisted the expertise of Sweett Group in Cambridge to project manage the restoration work whilst Brooks Architects in Leiston are the designers and Morgan Sindall are the specialist contractors based in and Norwich.

The team are making new windows to match the originals and carefully removing a Victorian porch which hides the fine panelled door case of the fashionable southern façade complete with a broken pediment.

The replacement roof and floor structures are already in place, with work underway inside the building. EDF Energy intends to complete the restoration work of Upper Abbey Farmhouse this year.
