Dear Friends,

If anything positive is to come out of this pandemic and the resulting lockdown, then it is to be hoped that it will be an increased awareness and understanding of what it means to serve. So, what is service? Is it a Christian duty? What does it require, and what sustains it? Firstly, it must come from love, and pure love requires sacrifice. Both these characteristics have been at the very heart of the many acts of service that have taken place over the last few months; not only directed towards family and friends but also towards the whole of society. This has been particularly relevant in the case of NHS and Care Home workers, where many have become ill or died as a result of serving others. The words in St. John’s Gospel come to mind, ‘God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son.’ This constitutes the ultimate sacrifice, and one performed not just for the chosen few, but for the salvation of the whole of fallen humanity. And moreover, it is not some abstract theological concept. God’s sacrifice is both personal ‘His

1

only begotten Son,’ and universal ‘God loved the whole world.’ Here we encounter a love that is sacrificial, one that is given freely and without conditions, and one that is expressed through the action of service: God’s service to humanity. It is this love for humanity and the sacrificial service involved that forms the basis of our understanding of what our Christian duty is all about. Jesus entered our fractured world through love for all humanity, He came to serve through love for all humanity, and it is out of this love for all humanity that He made the supreme sacrifices on the cross. It is an illustration of the magnitude of God’s service to humankind which not only reminds us of what we have been given but challenges us to do our duty and respond in service, love and sacrifice.

With love and prayers Liz

Telephone worship Daily Hope is a free telephone service from the Church of where you can listen to hymns, prayers and reflections, or even a full worship service. You have to press 1 for this, 2 for that and so on, so it can get a bit annoying, but it may well be worth trying - and well worth mentioning to any neighbours who are not on the internet and would value some such input. The freefone number is 0800 804 8044.

Worship with us We will be sharing in a service of Morning Worship each Sunday at 10.00 am, using the video-conferencing tool Zoom. If you'd like to join the 50 or so people who have shared in previous weeks, please contact Rev Ian Kitchen for more information ([email protected] ) Even if you haven't used Zoom before, it isn't difficult and Ian will be able to help you sort it out.

If you are not computer-savvy or you'd rather follow the service on your own we can let you have it via email or by paper through your letter box. A 2

growing band of people are doing this at 10 am each week to build the sense that we are all worshipping together. Email or telephone Ian for more details: 01765 650369.

The talk from the Zoom service should be on our Youtube channel (Fountains Benefice) after the service each week, for those who have followed the service on their own and any others who would like to see it.

Bible study Our Zoom Bible study group meets on Wednesday evenings at 7.30. It is a valuable time, getting to know God’s word better and seeing how it applies to our daily life. We would welcome more members – quite possibly we may set up another meeting at a different time. Please let Ian know if you would be interested.

The technology guide As stated above, we are using the Zoom tool quite a lot in the Church at the moment. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea and there have been security concerns about it, but so far it seems to be going well. We are also using these other online tools to try to get information across and give people a chance to get in touch:

The benefice Facebook page is called Fountains Benefice and is at https://www .facebook.com/fountains.benefice.7

Our website is called Fountains Group of Churches and can be found at http://fountainsgroupofchurches.co.uk/

Our Youtube channel is also called Fountains Benefice. There’s not a lot on it at the moment but we’ll be putting some more talks on. Let us know if there are other things which could usefully go there.

Every church has another page on the web, through the site called achurchnearyou. From the page achurchnearyou.com you can put in a place name, or use the code for one of our churches: 3

Aldfield 3366 Dallowgill 16890 Grewelthorpe 3211 Kirkby Malzeard 3377 Mickley 3261 Sawley 3367 Winksley 3368

You can find daily reflections and prayers on all these sites except the Youtube channel. Please do explore them see what is there.

The Benefice Book Group

Another month in the Coronavirus pandemic and we all had very strong reactions to the "The Key " by Kathryn Hughes, but we didn`t all react in the same way. We agreed that the characters were well drawn and interesting and the plot compelling with fascinating twists and turns. We also agreed that it was by no means an easy read.

It is a graphic and sometimes shocking account of the treatment of mental illness not too many years ago. Some of us found it impossible to take a detached view and almost too disturbing to read. but others found it absolutely compelling. We all I think recognise that this is a topic which needs to be discussed openly but perhaps the present situation when we are all under varying degrees of stress was

4

not the best time to tackle it. I personally felt that that the exchange of views by telephone and email didn`t do justice to such an important topic and that group discussion would have helped me to understand other people`s views but others might have found this too painful

Should you decide to read it I would suggest that you wait until we are no longer "locked down".

Our next choice is "Nine Coaches Waiting" by Mary Stewart and we hope to be ready to exchange our views by June 16th. Anne Carrick

Fountains Parish

Girlguiding Fountains Our meetings stopped abruptly before the end of the Easter term and resource for the end of term are still locked up in the Church room. However, we are keeping in touch and working towards badges. At Easter many girls completed an Easter badge, a part of which was to decorate their window. If you are lucky enough to live near a Brownie or Rainbow you may have seen these.

Girlguiding North West launched the sunflower challenge at the beginning of April, when every girl in our county received sunflower seeds to grow. It is hoped the sunflowers will bring sun and lots of pleasure to those around us. The seeds have now germinated and are being measured each month and progress recorded on the official record. The challenges included in this badge are writing a poem about sunflowers, a drawing or collage of a sunflower, making a sunflower from materials at home and a word search. The girls have been working hard to achieve the badge, which will be completed in the summer.

5

Careful unpacking, watering and at last germination in the light.

These are some of the life size sunflowers made from items found around the house.

6

Each week our county posts a gallery of sunflowers from around the county for us to share.

The girls celebrated VE Day making homemade bunting, baking carrot scones and fresh lemonade for their afternnon tea in the garden or inside.

Grewelthorpe

News from Grewelthorpe Village Hall & Community Centre

The Village Hall remains closed for all activities with the exception of the ‘Pop-up’ shop which is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 1pm and 3pm. The demand for fruit, vegetables and other staple foods has remained high and the shop will continue to operate for the foreseeable future.

During the closure of the Hall, we have taken the opportunity to re-decorate some of the ground floor rooms including the kitchen and the small meeting room. The café area will be completed before it re-opens at some time in the future.

We are also taking the opportunity to update the Hall booking management system, hopefully to an easily accessible online version. In the meantime, If you would like to book now for a future dated event, please telephone or e- mail Edward Threapleton on 01765 658744/ [email protected] who will ensure the information is recorded and entered on the new system when it goes live.

Keep well, stay safe

With best wishes from GVHCC

Kirkby Malzeard

KIRKBY MALZEARD AND DISTRICT FLOWER AND PRODUCE SHOW We are planning on holding the Show on Saturday, September 5. The schedule is complete and can be viewed on the village website wwwkirkbymalzeardarea.org.uk.

Update from the “Save the Henry Jenkins’” campaign What strange times we are living in! Staying at home! Social-distancing! Cut off from close contact from friends and neighbours! We hope that all our readers are safe and well. I’m sure we are all looking forward to the time when ‘normal times’ will return.

Not unnaturally, the campaign to save the Henry Jenkins has taken a back seat whilst we concentrate on the welfare of all those around us. But we have continued to work on behind the scenes. The Appeal Hearing, instigated by the owners of the Henry Jenkins against the refusal of their latest planning application, was due to be

9

heard on the 26th March, but was postponed. We are still awaiting a new date for the Hearting to be held at the HBC offices in . David Fielder rejected our latest purchase offer, in an 8-page letter where he outlined his reasons for refusing to consider any offer under £500,000. He has spent large sums of money on planning applications, planning appeals and, in recent months, on attempts to sue Harrogate Borough Council for ‘loss of trade’ and for nominating the Henry Jenkins as an Asset of Community Value. He has added the total of this spending onto the value of the property – even though, as our surveyor has indicated – as a semi-derelict pub it is worth a fraction of that. Anyone purchasing a public house will know that it is not possible to achieve change of use if there is a possibility of saving the building as a pub for the future. So, all of Mr Fielders reasons and his spending will mean nothing and will be in vain whilst the planners continue to refuse him domestic planning permission and the HJCP press forward with their viable plans to purchase, refurbish and re-open a once proud village tavern.

At some future date, people will want to meet and chat in a comfortable and friendly community pub, where a warm welcome will await those of all ages. The Henry Jenkins has served our community well for 200 years and, given the support of the residents and the commitment of the Management Team of the HJCP, will do so again!

We will continue to expand our membership and sell community shares. So far, the shares total stands at an amazing £208,750.00 and we appeal to anyone who might be interested in owning a part of their local pub to do so – help us achieve our target figure of £230,000!

When restrictions of movement are relaxed, we will formally launch our ‘Associate Membership’ for those unable to purchase shares but who wish to support the cause by contributing in other ways. However, should you wish to ‘join up’ now, please apply directly to me. (details below)

So please continue to give us your wonderful support and, sooner or later, we will prevail! Stay at home, keep safe and Save the NHS

Best regards 10

Mickley

LOCKDOWN IN MICKLEY Nature flourishes everywhere and within the church grounds are continued surprises. Bats enjoy their roosts in the church porch, though no sign of the swallow or Martin nests, quite yet. Flowers emerging here are so varied with bugle, cowslips, wood anemone and bluebells in profusion after the colourful spectacle of the primroses, wood sorrel and dog’s mercury. Early tortoise shell butterflies along with orange tips have meandering journeys through the church ground meadow. Greenfinches sound their alarm call many mornings and song thrush melodies fill late afternoon sounds, watchful about the sparrow hawk’s needs. Swifts arrived on May 11th from flights across Italy and Spain as our lives were changing as lockdown was relaxed. All is so mindful of St.Francis of Assisi, a mystic and pilgrim who lived in simplicity and wonderful harmony with God, with others, with nature and himself. He shows us just how inseparable the bond is concerned for nature, justice for the poor, commitment to society and inner peace. Frances Cole.

Congratulations to Catherine and Tony on the safe arrival of their beautiful baby girl Taylor.

Condolences to Linda Thackray on the death of her father, Derrek Baruch, at the beginning of May. Our thoughts and prayers are with Linda and her family at this very sad and difficult time.

100 CLUB 11

The VE Day Distancing Afternoon Tea and Quiz were a great success raising £387 for SSAFA. June brings the new 100 Club year to a start and it is proposed, taking into account and following the present self-distancing rules, to have an Open, VILLAGE ONLY, Garden evening on Friday 26th June to encourage our community atmosphere and show off all the hard work done in our gardens during the lockdown.

Stay safe and well. Patricia Harling
