Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal. -

McNeal | Pioneering Youth Marketer [TITLE SCREEN] Consuming Kids: The Commercialization of Childhood NARRATOR: Not since the end of World War II, at the height of the baby boom, have there been so many kids in our midst. There are now more than 52 million kids under 12 in all in the United States – the biggest burst in the U.S. youth population in half a century. And for American business, these kids have come to represent the ultimate prize: an unprecedented, powerful and elusive new demographic to be cut up and captured at all costs. There is no doubt that marketers have their sights on kids because of their increasing buying power – the amount of money they now spend on everything from clothes to music to electronics, totaling some 40 billion dollars every year. But perhaps the bigger reason for marketers’ interest in kids may be the amount of adult spending that American kids under 12 now directly influence – an astronomical 700 billion dollars a year, roughly the equivalent of the combined economies of the world’s 115 poorest countries. Academic Tenacity | 1 Introduction In a nationwide survey of high school dropouts, 69 percent said that school had not motivated or inspired them to work hard.1 In fact, many of the students who remain in school are not motivated or inspired either, and the more time students spend in K–12 education the worse it gets.2 This lack of motivation to do well in school represents a serious loss of human potential, with implications for students’ well-being later in life and for our country’s future economic growth. What prevents students from working hard in school? Is it something about them or is it something about school? More important, is there a solution to this problem? Most educational reforms focus on curriculum and pedagogy—what material is taught and how it is taught. -

INTRODUCTION Sports have drawn people together to cheer for their heroes for as long as there has been a record of human activity. Sports have been seen to rival religion in the power to unify diverse populations, and in some cases have sparked positive social movements that carry over to the worlds of business and government. Sports are timeless, yet with each generation, new technology and social dynamics have changed and intensified how we experience sports. In the past fifty years, we have seen many radical changes — broadcast television and cable, credit cards, salary caps, player unions, integration, globalization of the fanbase, shared revenue agreements, and $100 million player contracts. The changes on the horizon will likely be even more disruptive. For this project, we assembled a brain trust of futurists and experts to gaze into the next 25 years. Some of the underlying trends are undeniable. Medical advances are allowing us to alter the bodies of athletes. The computing power of smartphones doubles every 18 months. The appetite for sports is nearly insatiable — fans expect all-access passes into the clubhouse and into the boardroom. Change is coming fast. But how these trends intersect, and what our industry will look like as a result, is far from obvious. Discussing the future of our industry can be anxiety-provoking, simply because so much seems uncertain. No one wants to bet on the wrong trend. This project serves to remind us that the future is inherently fun — fun to debate, to contemplate, and to imagine. Some of these futurists’ predictions will come true, and more of them likely won’t. -
