ur first picture for July captures a key moment in the “Fisheries Oand Research” aspect of Muskies. It came from Jim Roerig, a frequent contributor of always excellent photos, who reports: “Every four years the MN DNR Fisheries section does a Muskie assessment on Lake Vermilion, one year on the east half and the next on the west half and then they skip two years and do it again. This was the first year in the two year cycle so netting took place on the east end. On May 8th 2005 several members of the Arrowhead Chapter and others were able to observe the assessment process. I wanted to try and get a large fish being extracted from the net and started shooting as soon as I saw this fish, which was 52 inches and weighed 38 lbs. I was using an Olympus Camedia C-3000 digital camera. I probably took around 30 shots and got maybe 10 really goods ones. The location? Well let's just say it was in Jim's bay.” So Jim won’t tell us where? Well, no matter, he got a very dramatic photo there. When we look at it our eyes are quickly drawn to the fish, and the immediate question, “Just how big is that thing?” After that thought, we begin to look at the boat, the DNR sticker, and the men handling the net. It’s interesting how intense they are at the cabin had never seen a Muskie and the wife and I always appear on their job – these men are doing serious work and doing it properly. as though we never have either, we are so excited to catch one.” The picture tells a story and makes you linger for a while, looking at “After I took the photos, we turned the boat so the onlookers everything that’s going on. That to me really tells the story. That musky catch ever, a 42-incher. He reports:“Carolyn caught her Muskie the made a memory for us and for them. But it’s a great story, and I agree with Dave – the spectators “We have a new Pentax Optio WP digital camera that I used to on the bank really make the photo. There they are, very interested, take the picture. I had it in Program Mode and used the flash for 'fill and perhaps a bit jealous? I normally believe that photo backgrounds in'. On the left side of the picture you see some very interested are best when they don’t intrude, but here again, like last month, a bystanders, who were having a meal at their picnic table. The people rule is broken and the result is excellent. Tips and Comments Let me comment on this month’s cover photo. That one also breaks my rule about seeing the face and the eyes. In this case, the fact you can't see the face of the fisherman puts a very strong focus on the fish the central element. It forces you to concentrate your attention on the fish, which is clearly a monster. If you saw the man's face, big smile, all that, it would detract from the fish. The man and fish would share the picture. Here, the fish owns it. Second by the man kneeling down the size of the fish is also emphasized. On the picture, the fish and the man occupy the same height. Finally, the fact that the man is focusing out over the side clearly says that he's in the release process, and he doesn't care about the camera or pictures or anything, he wants to get the fish back in the water. A very strong, unique photo. It demonstrates the striking effects that can be achieved by doing something different.
