Lot 118. Pres. James Monroe, letter to, 1823 Pres. James Monroe, letter to, 1823 Autograph letter of Richard Rush to President James Monroe, London, April 21, 1823. “Dear Sir, About three weeks ago, I received from Holland House a flat box of about two feet square, to be forwarded to you, the message stating that it must be sent with care, and if possible kept free from damp. I made an immediate application to Colonel Aspinwall, requesting him to aid me in getting it off by the hands of some careful Captain from this port, which I thought would be better than to send it by way of Liverpool. It remained in my custody, waiting the opportunity of a ship from this port until a few days ago, when, none offering, I met with the son of Mr. Maury, who was about going to Liverpool, and who promised to take it in his own trunk with the greatest care, and attend to its shipment from Liverpool with like care. I have therefore judged it best to deliver it over to him, as the number of ships constantly sailing from that port will give a prospect of your getting it sooner, than if I had continued to wait for a London ship. He sets out for Liverpool in a day or two, and had some expectation of finding a ship on the eve of sailing for Alexandria. The contents of the box are unknown to me; but I hope that it will, under the arrangements I have made, reach you safely. On the foreign affairs of this country, I have nothing to add to the general notices contained in one of my dispatches to the Secretary of State of a few days back. I remain, dear Sir, with the highest respect, your attached and faithful svt., Richard Rush.” Four pages, single fold, measures 10”H x 8”W. Paper is clean and ink is bright, chip removed along fold. Lot 118A. George Washington, last will & testament, 1800 Very Rare published version of "The Last Will and Testament of General George Washington" by Isaiah Thomas Jr (1749-1831), 1800. President George Washington died on December 14th, 1799. Just prior to his death, Washington read his will to his wife, Martha, and then instructed her to put it away in her "closet". Washington executed his last Will and Testament in his own hand-writing, including his misspellings, punctuation and some oddly expressed phrases. Washington wrote his name at the bottom of each page, except for page 23 which presumably he did not sign as he had previously signed his name after completing the document on July 9, 1799. The estate was probated on January 10, 1800 and the hand-written Will was recorded at the Fairfax County Courthouse in Virginia on January 23, 1800. This Pamphlet was printed by Isaiah Thomas Jr, February, 1800 in Worcester, MA. This copy had been amongst the Green Family papers and originally was obtained by William E. Green (1777-1863). According to the American Antiquarian Society Library in Worcester, MA this printed edition of the Washington Last Will & Testament is the same edition of which only 13 others are known to exist and all are in private institutions, including American Antiquarian Society, Library of Congress, Widener Library Harvard University.
