CAMBODIA MINE/ERW VICTIM INFORMATION SYSTEM

MONTHLY REPORT FOR OCTOBER 2015

Background

The Mine/ERW Victim Information System (CMVIS) established in 1994 by the Cambodian Red Cross with technical and financial supported by Handicap International Belgium and UNICEF to provide systematic collection, analysis, interpretation and dissemination of information about civilian and military casualties of landmines, unexploded ordnance and other explosive remnants of war in Cambodia.

By the end of 2009, CMVIS was completely handed over from the Cambodian Red Cross to the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) for full management responsibility.

Accidents and Casualtiies Information

1- Total Casualties reported from 1979 to October 2015 For the period of 1979 to October 2015, a total of 64561 mine/ERW casualties were recorded by CMVIS data gatherers. Of the 64561 casualties: - 50993 (79%) were mine casualties and 13568 (21%) were ERW casualties. - 19720 (31%) people killed, 35861 (55%) people injured and 8980 (14%) people amputated. - 52349 (81%) casualties were men, 6005 (9%) casualties were boys (age<18), 4764 (8%) casualties were women, 1380 (2%) casualties were girls (age<18) and 63 (0%) casualties were unknowns.

2- Accident Summary for January to October 2015 From January to October 2015, 68 mine/ERW accidents were provisionally recorded. This figure for January to October 2015 represents a decrease of 24% compared with 89 mine/ERW accidents reported from January to October 2014. Of the 68 mine/ERW accidents, 28 (41%) were mine accidents and 40 (59%) were ERW accidents.

3- Casualty Summary for January to October 2015 From January to October 2015, 93 Mine/ERW casualties were provisionally recorded. This figure for January to October 2015 represents a decrease of 34% compared with 140 casualties reported from January to October 2014. Of the 93 casualties: - 25 (27%) people killed or injured by mines and 68 (73%) resulted from 40 ERW accidents. - 15 (16%) people killed, 57 (61%) people injured and 21 (23%) people amputated. - 62 (67%) casualties were men, 22 (24%) casualties were boys (age<18), 2 (2%) casualties were women, and 7 (7%) casualties were girls (age<18).

4- Accident Summary for October 2015 In October 2015, 6 Mine/ERW accidents were provisionally recorded in provinces of: , Kampong Speu, Pailin, Kandal, and Banteay Meanchey (CMVIS data gatherers collected information about accidents primarily through interviews with local authorities, mine/ERW action agencies, relatives, families of casualties, or casualties themselves).

5- Casualty Summary for October 2015 In October 2015, 8 Mine/ERW casualties were provisionally recorded. This figure for October 2015 represents an increase of 60% compared with 5 casualties in October 2014. Of the 8 casualties: - 1(12.5%) was mine casualty, and 7(87.5%) were ERW casualties. - 7(87.5%) people injured, and 1(12.5%) people amputated. - 8(100%) casualties were men.

 Impact of prevention effort In October 2015, 7(87.5%) casualties were received MRE messages prior to the accidents.

 Activity at the time of accident The activities caused people killed or injured by mine/ERW as follow: - 6 casualties injured by handling mine/ERW activities - 1 casualty injured by farming activity - 1 casualty amputated by collecting food
