Positive Education brings together the science of Positive Psychology with best practice teaching to encourage and support individuals, schools and communities to flourish. Flourishing refers to a combination of ‘feeling good and doing good’. Positive Education focuses on specific skills that assist students to strengthen their relationships, build positive emotions, enhance personal resilience, promote mindfulness and encourage a healthy lifestyle. “The fundamental goal of positive education is to promote flourishing or positive mental health within the school community.” (Norrish et. al., 2013) The PERMA Model was developed by respected positive psychologist, Martin Seligman. "PERMA" stands for the five essential elements that should be in place for us to experience lasting well-being.
Why?
“A school curriculum that incorporates wellbeing will ideally prevent depression, increase life satisfaction, encourage social responsibility, promote creativity, foster learning, and even enhance academic achievement” (Waters, 2014).

2019/2020
Adam Price
Pastoral Care What do parents want for their children?
– According to Seligman et al.’s 2009 paper, Positive Education is a response to the gap between what people want for their children and what schools teach. That is, most parents want their children to be happy, healthy, and confident, but schools only focus on achievement, discipline, and academic skills. These are of course important, but so are positive mental health outcomes. What is Positive Education?
– Positive Education is an approach to education that blends academic learning with character and well-being. – Preparing students with life skills such as: grit, optimism, resilience, growth mindset, engagement, and mindfulness amongst others. – Positive education is based on the science of well-being and happiness. Positive Education Moving from Languishing to Flourishing
– Flourishing is typified by greater wellbeing, a greater sense of purpose and higher levels of life satisfaction – Students with higher levels of wellbeing are associated with higher academic performance (Norrish, 2015) – Teaching students the skills to optimize their wellbeing – Macau Anglican College has committed to Positive Education – Through Positive Education we can improve attainment and wellbeing Positive Education: Why we need it
– At the end of the 2018/2019 Academic year evidence suggested that as a cohort the students of Macau Anglican College were languishing (Huppert, 2005) – A survey using ESS Wellbeing with 1/5 of high school students, placed their average wellbeing at just 5 out of 10 Bridging the gap PERMA for Flourishing How can we promote flourishing? Feeling good and functioning well
– Feeling good (Hedonic) – Promoting positive emotions and life satisfaction – Promoting wellbeing strategies
– Functioning well (Eudemonic) – Enable achievement – Focus on Strengths – Focus on growth and improvement The Geelong Approach – Successful Learners- relates to Positive accomplishment – Confident Individuals- relates to Positive Relationships – Responsible Citizens- relates to Positive Purpose – Effective Contributors –relates to Positive Engagement – Positive Emotions are related to all areas What we are doing: Character Strengths Each Student has undertaken the character strengths test
– https://www.viacharacter.org/ Growth mindset
– The single biggest predictor of achievement is not IQ but Mindset
Boosting Positive Emotions Gratitude
– Gratitude helps us focus on the positive and counter acts destructive negative emotions that are linked to depression and anxiety. Positive Education Enhanced Curriculum Focus Assemblies: GRIT and Resilience
– Reinforcing the importance of Perseverance, Self-discipline and long- term goals Cooperative Learning for Positive Relationships
– Cooperative learning focuses on building social skills and on developing face-to-face interactions. – In short, PEOPLE MATTER – Positive Relationships are the single biggest UP for any of us Positive Parenting
“Raising children, I knew now, was far more than just fixing what was wrong with them. It was about identifying and amplifying their strengths and virtues and helping them find the niche where they can live these positive traits to the fullest” Seligman, 2002, p. 11 What can you do?
– Take the Character Strengths test – Praise the process and virtues – Create Optimism (criticism should be temporary and specific not permanent and pervasive) – Celebrate failure (as a method for growth) Identify, Name and Praise
Seligman (2002) stresses that on the appearance of character strengths or values, parents must identify, name and praise it, to motivate the child to repeat, acquire and eventually enhance it. Empirical research has subsequently confirmed Seligman’s premise, since the well-being of children and youngsters was greater when their parents identified and encouraged their character strengths (Waters, 2015). The most successful students have the strongest social relationships
– Encourage Positive Emotions like joy, gratitude, interest, amusement, love and hope. – These emotions BROADEN and BUILD a student’s capacity to learn and develop social relationships.
