TNTRODUCTION Whilst reseatching the history of my family at the Hyde Park FHC, I noticed a microfilm purporting to contain miscell-aneous Irish genealogical material. Amongst the microfilmed documents was a transcript of the earliest surviving Cloghran Parish Registers, which are known to have been destroyed in the Four Courts fire of L922. To bring the exj-stence of this document to the attention of a wider audience, I decided to produce a new verslon of the original (unattributed) transcript; this document is the result. As with all documents of this nature the original should be consulted to confirm that entries have been transcribed and indexed accurately. The following specific points should be borne in mind when using the transcript: Dates All dates have been standardised as followsr day in nurnbers, month in three letters (abbreviated as necessary), year. Any apparent errors have been shown in boLd. Legibility and Spelling In cases of doubt, the spelling of surnames has been checked against other entries in the index; variations in the spelling of the same surname have been noted. Additional Information Marginal notes and comments from the the text or as footnotes. The Index The i-ndex list.s in alphabetical order all persons who were Uaptised, married and buried at Cloghran over the various periods covered by the Register copy. Abbreviated Christian names have been transcribed exactly as they appear in the Register copy. Transcriber's Observations From 1856 onwards, the original rial of Roman Catholics by the abbreviation 'RC'.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE PARISH AND CHURCH Cloghran is an ancient parish in Co Dublin, one-and-a-ha1f miles south of Swords, and covering 1558 acres. Lewis remarked (1837) that it was known as Cloghran-Swords to distinguish it from another parish of the same name south-west of Dublin. The living was a rectory in the Diocese of Dublin, in the patronaqe of the Crown. Cloghran was united to Santry in 1872 by decision of the Diocesan Synod. Cloghran Parish Church was built in 171,2 at unknown cost on the site of a previous structure. It was described by Lewis (1837) as a very plain and simple edifice capable of seating 100. The glebe-house was built in I8L2 at a cost of t738, the Board of First Fruits contributing a qift of 8369 and a loan of the same amount. In the 1-830s divine service was celebrated once on all Sundays and on Christmas Day; the Sacrament was administered six times a year. Adams (1883) reported that the church was broken into in 1,852 and the parish registers (dating f rom the 17Er' century) stolen. The church was closed after the Second World War and demolished by the remaining parishioners, apparently without formal permission.
