Message from Jocelyn Gooch – Deputy Principal

Term 1 2018 was my first opportunity to start the year with Endeavour Sports High School.

We have welcomed our Year 7 students as well as a large number of new students across Years 8 to 11, reflecting the school’s ever growing reputation for delivering quality education in a caring environment. All Years have settled into their classes, and are meeting the new demands and expectations placed upon them.

All students have a dedicated Year Adviser who has a pastoral care role within their year. The Year Advisers are listed below:

Year 7 – Ms Jessop and Mr Briscoe Year 10 – Ms Kaladelfos Year 8 – Ms Jenkins Year 11 – Mr Kelly Year 9 – Mr Raxworthy Year 12 – Mr Hibbert

Students, parents and carers are encouraged to raise any issues of concern with the Year Adviser, or with the Head Teacher Welfare, Mrs Bradley. Students can also make an appointment with the school counsellors, Mr Sexton and Ms Sierra.

This term has been a busy one. Year 12 have finished their mid-course exams and should have established successful study habits. We have conducted and will conduct study skills seminars for all students using Elevate Education. Elevate’s study skills sessions are designed to achieve behavioural change amongst students. Already students have enjoyed the enrichment experience of excursions. Our Year 7 and 8 Extension program led by Karina Dunne and Rhys Briscoe have provided students with many opportunities both at school and in the wider community. Many of these opportunities have been in a competitive environment with Endeavour proving to be a worthy component both on the sporting field and academically.

Just a reminder to all parents and carers that the school has clearly defined procedures for lateness, using sick bay and early leave requirements. For students who become sick during the day, they are required to inform their class teacher who will organise for them to be sent to the sick bay where a trained first aid attendant will provide support and contact parents. Children should not contact their parents directly via their mobile phones.

Any student who arrives late to school must bring a late note from their parent. Alternately, you may walk your child into the office and sign them in or phone the office to advise that your child has just been dropped off and is on their way in. When these procedures are followed, the partial absence is recorded as “explained” as opposed to “unexplained”. Partial absences can also include students with a request to leave school early. Students should be at school engaged in their learning for the vast majority of the time, unless they are sick. There is clear research to support the impact of regular absences on a child’s academic progression. If you have any questions about attendance, please contact your child’s Year Adviser, Head Teacher Welfare or the Deputy Principal responsible for your child’s year group.

All students in Years 7-11 have now received their assessment booklets. The booklets have also been emailed to parents. At each year group meeting, crucial issues such as penalties for lateness, malpractice, plagiarism, technology issues and other important factors were discussed with students. Each subject area is represented in the booklet and their relevant assessment schedule that outlines the timing and types of formal assessments they will be issuing for the year. I recommend that students and their parents read through the booklet and assessment schedules together to ensure that you are both aware of the school’s policy and procedures for completing assessments and note the timing of each subject’s assessments on a planner.

I look forward to seeing all students return on Tuesday 1 May looking distinguished in the correct school uniform. Please check the school’s website on uniform requirements. I remind everyone that the school is a uniform school, which not only ensures the safety of our students but provides a sense of belonging to a community that cares about promoting unity and inclusivity.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths)

STEM started off the first term with a number of excursions. Our Year 7 and Year 8 students attended the University of Wollongong for the “Festival of STEM and Entrepreneurship”. During this excursion, our students were involved in activities and challenges including virtual reality, aeronautics, forensics, 3D design and 3D printing.

Our other two excursions also involved Year 7 and 8 with trips to the Microsoft store. Our students learnt about how seismographs measure earthquake intensities and as a STEM challenge they built their own working model of a seismograph.

During the term Year 7 to 10 STEM classes have been working on two different modules. The first module taught the students how to code an animation program called SCRATCH. Students learnt a variety of animation techniques and completed the module by creating their very own video game.

Our second module taught the basics of flight using drones. Students learned to fly the drones with joystick controllers and then programmed the drones with a computer to fly autonomously. This proved to be a very popular lesson with our students and teachers alike!

Our STEM project has been made possible by means of a grant from Toyota through the Schools Plus program and we are deeply grateful for the support and encouragement they have provided to us.

EXTENSION PROGRAM

Term 1 2018 has seen the evolution of Endeavour’s extension program to a new and exciting phase. We welcome Jocelyn Gooch as our Gifted Education Executive Coordinator and Rhys Briscoe as our Stage 4 Coordinator. I am continuing my role as overseer of the Extension Program at Endeavour and am now closely working with the Stage 5 Year 9J and 10J cohorts. Some of my initiatives also involve students in Year 11, who are being targeted for extension due to their skills and expertise in various subjects.

As Mr Kozlowski has highlighted in a number of key addresses, we now boast a record number of Year 6 students sitting the gifted education tests and our enrolments for Year 7 in general have increased dramatically. A lot of hard work and commitment from our staff in producing quality programs for our extension students has gone a long way in ensuring its continued success.

Stage 4 Report by Mr Rhys Briscoe

Our Stage 4 Extension students were invited to the “STEM: Festival of Entrepreneurship” at the University of Wollongong. Year 7 became CSI lab assistants as they learnt about and performed the many forensic methods scientists use to catch criminals. Year 8 discovered the benefits and uses of virtual reality beyond the realm of video games and was able to participate in mine rescue operations currently used to train first responders.

In the classrooms students are being enriched beyond the syllabus in all subjects. Year 7 have analysed the evidence of evolution, studied artefacts excavated in archaeological digs, studied for a CHOOSEMATHS competition and critically analysed poetry.

Year 8 have investigated the benefits of a controlled experiment, analysed the monarch’s importance in law making, studied for a CHOOSEMATHS competition and investigated urban sprawl.

Stage 5 Report by Mrs Karina Dunne

In Week 5 of the term Mr Robbey Bushell and I selected a number of students from the 9J and 10J classes to attend the Science and Engineering challenge at ANSTO. This was run by Newcastle University and sponsored by Rotary. All students who participated were thoroughly engaged in team collaborative challenges that demanded high order thinking skills and practical group dynamics. Students achieving significant success on the day were Byron Kay and Geromie Hatzistergos for their second place in the water Turbine challenge, Claire Greiss, Marina Hillelis and Felicity McNeill, who also placed second in their All Day Bridge Construction Challenge and Ethan Scott, Joel Murphy and Jaiden French, who took out the very coveted first place in the Catapult Engineering Challenge. All students who participated came away buzzing with the recognition of their own talents and skills in engineering and physics, each achieving an Endeavour participation certificate and recognition for their efforts at our weekly assembly.

Another initiative taking place in Term 1 has been Mr Westwood’s 9J PDHPE class, who were visited by Tom Reynolds from Independent Drug Education Australia (IDEA). He spoke on a range of Drug Education Issues concerning adolescents including a brief overview of drug history & contextualising harms of illicit drugs to legal drugs.

Students were briefed on how to identify, protect themselves & friends, as well as respond to alcohol poisoning; prevention of, and responding to drink spiking in vulnerable situations. Also addressed was the safe use of pharmaceutical drugs, and how to respond to adverse drug reactions plus the need for looking after someone who has taken specific illicit drugs: Cannabis, ecstasy, hallucinogens etc. Emergency & party situations; Police, ambulance, DRSABC. All of which are highly relevant in today’s society for all of our students.

Coming up…

Students from Year 8 & 9J HSIE and Science will be attending an offsite educational experience at Canberra, where they will visit Questacon and the War memorial in Week 11. Pictures and details of this event will be posted in the Term 2 Endeavour Log. I want to thank Mr Ben Cameron for the organisation behind this quality experience.

I also want to mention a very exciting new initiative that I have been working toward with staff at Bradfield Senior College. A select group of Year 11 students from Visual Arts, Advanced and Standard English and Graphics will be going along to a workshop on “Zines.” These are self-published, artistically presented fanzines that contain discussions on topics often too far out for the mainstream media. Our students will come home from this industry workshop and create their own zine individually or in teams of 3-4 and then have the opportunity to exchange them with many other schools at the Vivid Education Festival in June. This is a highly anticipated event and one I am excited to collaborate on with Ms Aphrodite Chamos and Ms Melanie Shorter in our English Department.

Finally Mr Briscoe-Hough and I are always working hard to bring new strategies and ideas to our staff for Professional Development. By attending the “Ignite the Spark Conference” on ‘Differentiating Assessment’ on Friday 6 April at the University of , we will be collecting all we can on new ways to design assessments for extending our students at all levels across the school and continuing to develop quality extension programs for our gifted learners.

We look forward to reporting back on these developments in Term 2.

Why So Many Camps?

We believe that camps are one of the most effective tools we have to build meaningful and lasting relationships with our fellas. Clontarf camps are seen as an engagement tool rather than as a reward activity. While the boys who are doing the right thing rarely miss the chance to get on a Clontarf camp if they wish to, we also need to get around those fellas who are struggling to be their best for whatever reason.

Year 7 at Clontarf Academy Room

We welcomed our newest Clontarf lads early in the term at our Year 7 Induction Camp. The fellas learned about Clontarf values and the importance of being a good bloke at school and making the most of the opportunities that this great school will offer.

After a fun session at Flipout, the fellas made their own pizzas for dinner and settled in for a movie before rolling the swags out in the Dance Room and then getting up early for Thursday training. They are an amazing bunch of boys and we look forward to helping guide them through to graduation.

Year 8/9 Oztag Camp at Blacktown

This fun-filled camp started off with a splash at Cables Water Park out in Penrith where the fellas got some relief from the hot sun. Next day they were all out in uniform at Club for an Oztag competition with their Clontarf brothers in Mt Druitt.

It was great to see our boys interacting with the lads from out west. We even came away with the trophy!

Year 10 Amazing Race at Taronga Zoo

In Week 3 the lads headed into the city for lunch with 60 staff members from Deutsche Bank. After lunch we teamed up with DB staff and headed to Taronga Zoo for an Amazing Race and a session of Wild Ropes with plenty of wildlife and views!

It was amazing to see our boys chatting and engaging with executives and managers from throughout Australia and Asia. They represented Endeavour with real pride all day. Well done fellas!

Year 11 Cultural Walk at La Perouse

A group of Year 11 boys took a day trip out to La Perouse for a cultural walk with one of the legendary Ella brothers, Tim. After a feed of traditional bush tucker and a guided trek through ancient lands the boys finished off with a free F45 session at Matraville and a massive feast at the local RSL.

It was a great bonding experience for next year’s leaders and we think the boys have really begun to understand the importance of their role as leaders in the Academy and around school.

Year 12 Pledge Camp at Lake Burrendong

Early in Term 1, four of our Year 12s gave up their own weekend to attend the Year 12 Pledge Camp with every other NSW Clontarf Academy at Lake Burrendong.

With guest speakers from the Education Department, the NRL, the Aboriginal community, and drug and alcohol experts, it was an important look at how massive this year is for them.

The fellas committed to graduating and signed off on the pledge which they personally drafted.

They know if they stick to their guns there will be great rewards for them this year and well into the future.

Jeff Hardy Arnold Woulf Academy Director Operations Officer HOME LIBRARY

A number of resources have been added to the Library’s collection early in 2018. These include Fiction of differing genres to cater for student tastes; general Non Fiction; Preliminary and HSC resources for the various curriculum areas and digital recordings which our staff integrate into their classroom teaching. During Term 1, apart from regular usage from our students and class bookings, our library has been utilised for a number of activities including but not limited to staff professional development seminars; refereeing courses; filming of staff and students dance performance for Harmony Day; hosting international visitors from Cambodia to learn about how a sports high school functions; STEM lessons; Drug Education seminars, visit from the Sharks Well-being Unit; VET Induction meeting; Tell Them From Me Survey. Term 1 has also seen a number of not only our regular readers but new readers who have heard about books either from friends, have seen the movie and want to read the book or have wanted to borrow a particular book because the teacher librarian has raved about it!

HOME TSP NETBALL

TSP Netball has had a good start to the year. We welcomed our new group of Year 7 girls and they have adapted well. We have been focusing on the girls’ fitness by improving their strength and endurance. This has taken place every Tuesday and Thursday afternoons with our Netball coaches, as well as Friday mornings in the school fitness centre with Ms Turner.

We have participated in the Sydney East Under 15s Knockout and also the Sydney East Opens Knockout Rounds 1 & 2 which were held at Bellingara netball courts. We have successfully progressed to the next rounds which will be held in July at Menai. We have high hopes that our girls will do us proud!

On 21 March, our Year 7 & 8 girls were invited to Netball Central at Homebush along with six other Sports High Schools for a Netball Development Day. The girls had a lot of fun and learnt new skills and ideas which they could apply on court.

We are looking forward to our upcoming competitions and we know our girls are well prepared to apply the skills that they have been practising throughout Term 1.

Ms Mouratidis & Ms Blades HOME Mentor and Netball Coach TSP RUGBY UNION

The Girls Rugby Union/League squad are now Level 1 accredited Rugby League coaches after completing a one day course at school with Development Officer Huw Ellis and Kate Mullaly from NSWRL. The girls will take turns at refereeing Year 6 PSSA games during Terms 2 and 3.

Congratulations to the Girls Rugby Union players that were selected in the Sydney East Rugby Union team: Kyla Johnston, Marama Whanga Katipa, Lilli Kelly, Zali Hopkins and Tyra Mcrae Tawhara. Special mention goes to Marama Whanga Katipa and Zali Hopkins who also played Rugby Sevens in Hong Kong as a curtain raiser to Hong Kong Sevens!

The U14s and U16s Girls competed in the 3rd leg of the Sports High Schools Rugby 7s Tournament at Matraville Sports High School. The day saw Latisha Smythe, Tairah Bolatagici and Tyla DeBartolo make their Rugby representative debut for the school and the girls were very competitive against Hills SHS and Westfields SHS. Notable mention goes to Murphy-Lee Tekura who captained the side and showed great leadership.

The U15s Rugby Sevens team were in form with solid wins over Westfields SHS and Hunter SHS, and narrow losses to Hills SHS and Matraville SHS. The U13s finished the day on a high with a confidence boosting 25-20 win over Matraville SHS. Both squads spent the following Thursday reviewing the video footage as feedback.

Congratulations to the following boys on their selection to Sydney East Rugby Union: Luciano Svagelli, Keenan Mclean, and Sardy Halbouni.

With Summer Sevens completed until Term 4, the boys’ squads will now focus on 15-a-side Rugby Union and the girls squads will focus on Rugby League with Cronulla Caringbah Coach Steve Kelly.

TSP FOOTBALL

2018 sees the introduction of our Year 7 groups in both boys and girls. Each group has already adapted well to our program structure and are displaying a willingness to put into action the information they have been given. The sessions where they are combined with Year 8 are giving them great opportunities to compete against the quality competition at Endeavour Sports High School.

Sydney East Trials

Trials for the inter-regional carnivals have now begun with many of our senior students now competing for positions in the Sydney East squads.

In the girls, congratulations go to past members of the Sydney East team, Isabella Georgievski, Melody Nelson, Alex Tims, Jade Lockton and Chantelle Symes on once again being selected. This year they have been joined by Karlee Hilderbrant, Tiarne Shuman and Felicity McNeil in making the Sydney East extended squad.

In the boys, congratulations go to Josh Keremelevski and Daniel Goni on their selection in the Sydney East team.

We look forward to hearing of their success in the upcoming championships.

Dallas Cup

Special mention needs to be made in regard to Melody Nelson being selected in the Australian Schoolgirls Football team that has recently competed in the Dallas Cup in the USA. Alex Tims also competed in this tournament as a member of her club team, NW Koalas.

Sports High School Puma Cup and Trophy

We competed in the first round of the Sports High School round robin recently against Hunter Sports High School. The boys were unfortunate not to come away with a point when Hunter scored the winning goal with the last kick of the game to win 3-2. Our young team displayed composure in defence and good variety in attack in an entertaining game. Daniel Goni and Michael Hoffman deserve special mention for their efforts on the day.

In the girls’ game unfortunate errors were punished leading to a final score of 4-0. This did not reflect the quality of the game as both teams displayed good passing sequences and good organisation in defensive efforts. Whilst all our players put in solid Junior girls preparing for a gym session performances Tiarne Shuman deserves special mention for at Start Fitness tireless efforts throughout the game. NSWCHS Under 16 State Team

Michael Hoffman, Marcus Russo, Cody Ashburner, Matthew Keremelevski, Presley Ortiz, Luka Stosic, Jad Moussa, Dylan Bozicevic, Nelson Lam, Isaac Wardle and Kai Santangelo were invited to attend the NSWCHS State U16 trials in recent weeks where they performed with great promise.

Our congratulations to Presley, Cody, Matthew and Luka on being selected for the finals trials for this team. These will be taking place in the next two weeks. Good luck boys.

Sydney FC Japan Tournament

Sydney FC, as part of their growing commitment to ESHS has organised for the Sydney FC School Network to combine forces and play in the One Nation Cup in Shonan, Japan. The One Nation Cup is a U15 International Football festival that rotates every two years between Germany, South Africa and Japan. The tournament is designed to bring U15 players from around the world together to experience each other’s cultures using football as a backdrop.

The trip is fully funded by the organisers and Sydney FC with participants only responsible for flights to the hosting country.

Sixteen players were selected from the four Sydney FC schools and will travel to Japan in May to play against teams from South Africa, Turkey, Russia, Japan and New Zealand. Presley Ortiz, Marcus Russo, Michael Hoffman, Dylan Bozicevic, Some of our Year 10 boys Mustapha Jalloh and Josh Kermond will represent ESHS at the tournament. The squad departs on 19 May.

Youth Week Cup

The Year 7 boys and girls will get their first opportunity to represent ESHS in competition when they participate in the Youth Week Cup. This competition will take place in the last week of this term at 5 Sports. It is a 7 aside tournament against our local schools where the focus will be on participation rather than winners.

Sydney FC Talent ID days

Term 2 will see the beginning of the Sydney FC talent identification days where all our students, boys and girls will have an opportunity to play against the other Sydney FC schools and put into play all that they have learnt so far. We look forward to seeing their continued progress displayed on the field.

During Open Night we were also lucky enough to host the A- League Trophy, The Premiers Plate and the FFA Cup. Sydney FC is the first club in Australia to hold all three trophies at once.

We have had a little trouble with the delivery of the Sydney FC training gear and have been in contact on a number of occasions looking to sort the issues out. We apologise for the delay and will get that gear out to the students as soon as we are able.

TSP RUGBY LEAGUE

The start of 2018 sees us welcoming the new members of our Rugby League family – Year 7. We look forward to getting to know them and working with them, along with all the other boys in our program.

It has been a busy start to the Rugby League year with games already being played throughout Term 1.

Canberra 9s

Our Opens non-representative Rugby League boys travelled to Canberra for the Canberra 9s tournament. They represented the school with pride, passion and excellent sportsmanship, taking out the Grand Final against Gungahlin College, 13 – 6, with Trevor Taufa being named Player of the Final. These students were outstanding ambassadors for our school and are to be commended for reflecting our values of respect, commitment and personal best.

Under 13s

The Year 7 boys played a trial game against Illawarra Sports High School in Week 6 on the “Field of Dreams”. It was a great opportunity for the newest members of the TSP Rugby League family to play their first game in Endeavour colours in front of the wider school community. The boys played an enthusiastic brand of football and although no official score was kept, we had a convincing victory with Chevy Stewart scoring five tries in

his opening game.

Buckley Shield

On 29 March, Endeavour played Hunter Sports High School on “The Field of Dreams”. It was the first hit out for the boys this year and we were keen to see how they were looking leading into the 2018 campaign. We started the game well with an early try to Brody Hunter and continued to play well throughout the match. Tries to Kobey Douglas, Puati Charlie, Will Gibson and a double to Corey Ogden gave us a comfortable victory backed up with conversions to Max DeMeio and Jack

Bliss. In the end we ran out 30-0 winners.

Buettner Shield and Stanley Cup

In Week 10 we travelled down to Illawarra for the preliminary games of the Buettner Shield (under 13s) and Stanley Cup (under 15s). The format of the day sees us playing Westfields and Illawarra Sports High Schools in each age group to determine the rankings of each school for the finals day that is played in Term 3. The 13s had a convincing victory over Illawarra in their first game winning 30- 10. The 15s first game was against Westfields and the team put on a spirited display against a team that beat us convincingly in the Buckley Shield last year. In the end, Westfields snuck home with a 6-4 victory. The 13s second game was against Westfields and our bigger opponents were too strong in this game, running away with a convincing victory. The 15s second game was against Illawarra and was a tightly contested affair. Ill discipline with penalties proved costly in the short format game and Illawarra were able to hold on to a 10-4 lead despite a late come back from the Endeavour team.

Visit from Sharks Well-being Unit

In March the Year 9 TSP Rugby League students were visited by the Wellbeing Unit of the Cronulla Sharks. It was very fitting that NRL squad member Will Kennedy was our guest presenter. Will is an Endeavour graduate from the Year 12 Class of 2015. Will addressed a number of issues and reflected on his own experiences of moving away from home at a young age to follow his dream of playing Rugby League and fulfilling his aspirations of making the NRL. The Year 9 boys asked many pertinent questions, ranging from how Will coped living without his family, his current daily routine, how he’s preparing for life after football, food intake and game day preparation.

Year 9 Excursion

On 9 April Year 9 Rugby League visited the Rugby League Museum at NRL Headquarters. The boys received a tour of the museum, which showcases the rich history of the game, by volunteers who work there. They were required to complete a work book based on the various exhibits on display which included a cap worn by Dally Messenger, the game's first Premiership trophy, tributes to the Team of the Century, the Immortals, the Hall of Fame and interactive media displays.

Sydney East Representatives

The following boys were selected from the Sydney East trials, which were held on 21 March.

Opens: Sardy Halbouni, Darcey Moran, Luciano Svagelli, Jensen Taumoepeau, Alec Brennan, Tyler Ah-Chong.

Under 15s: Kobie Wilson, Sam Jinks, Dranza Hawe-DeThierry, Thomas Siumaka, Hennessy Ofria-Hunt, Jayden Samrani, Adam Singleton, Arden Gulasi, Te Wehi Waitere, Angus Sutherland, Kyron Fekitoa.

These boys will play for Sydney East in May in an attempt to gain selection in the Sydney Red team. Congratulations and good luck to all boys. (Photos of the Sydney East boys will be placed in the Term 2 Log.) Glenn Brailey

This year we have welcomed Glenn Brailey to the TSP Rugby League coaching staff. Glenn has been involved with Cronulla Junior Reps for seven years as an assistant. He was Head Coach of Cronulla Harold Matthews Cup for three years, and in 2015 won the NSWRL Harold Matthews Premiership and National title. Currently Glenn is involved coaching in the Sharks Elite Academy and with recruitment. Glenn’s thoughts on the TSP Rugby League program:

“I am really enjoying my time at Endeavour so far this year. I am enjoying working with the students and helping to develop them as players. I have been impressed with their work ethic and commitment to the sport and it’s great to see the program from an insider’s perspective after hearing about it for many years on the outside.”

Vale Steve Folkes

The Endeavour Rugby League family were very deeply saddened by Steve’s sudden passing.

Steve was a legend of the game. He made 245 first-grade appearances for his beloved Bulldogs from 1978 to 1991, represented New South Wales in State of Origin on nine occasions and Australia five times. Steve was pivotal in the Bulldogs’ four grand final victories during the 1980s and coached the Bulldogs in their 2004 NRL Grand Final victory.

Steve was a member of the Endeavour TSP Rugby League coaching staff in 2016 and proved to be a wonderful mentor and role model for the students. His contribution to our program will always be remembered and valued.

TSP DANCE

Term 1 has been absolute non-stop for our TSP Dancers. They have been working towards several different video auditions, performance opportunities as well as trying to create the perfect team name!

Two of our senior students, Ellie Bull and Tea Maros (Yr 11), performed a beautiful dance during our Harmony Day assembly. Their dancing, combined with the musical skills of Chantelle Symes, Steven Gamu and Mr Raxworthy made for a stunning performance. Ellie Bull and Tea Maros performing

‘True Colours’

All TSP Dancers were a part of the Harmony Day video that was presented at the assembly. They danced empowering choreography to the song ‘This Is Me’ from The Greatest Showman.

Selected students have auditioned for the 2018 Schools Spectacular combined dance segment. They produced a high quality audition video and I am extremely proud of their efforts and team work. Several students also auditioned to be Featured Dancer for the 2018 Schools Spectacular. These students auditioned in the styles of Contemporary, Musical Theatre, Hip Hop, Jazz and Tap. They all did exceptionally well and are awaiting to see if they made it to the live callback auditions held by the Arts Unit.

The TSP Dance Company and TSP Dance Ensemble have been working extremely hard on their auditions for the Ultimo Dance Festival. As a mentor, I am extremely proud of the amount of effort students have put into learning technique and performance quality in relation to the dance choreography.

Finally, TSP Dance is excited to announce our team name, ‘The Dream Team’!
