THE WIN: The Royals snapped a five-game losing streak and in the process halted a franchise record 45-inning scoreless streak on offense on a Whit Merrifield solo home run in the third inning…the scoreless streak fell three innings shy of the Major League record shared by the 1906 Philadelphia A’s and 1968 Cubs, who held the last longest streak in the Majors, according to Elias…they remain three games behind Minnesota for the second American League Wild Card spot. ÊÊ Clinched their sixth straight season series win over Tampa Bay (now 4-2 in 2017) and are 29-10 (.744) vs. the Rays since 2012, the best record of one team vs. any opponent in the Majors during that time (min. 20 games)…they’ve won 18 of 21 home games during that stretch (all three losses were shutouts). ÊÊ Have won four of the last six at Kauffman Stadium, improving to 36-31 (.537) through 67 games, with just 14 home games remaining on the schedule. ÊÊ Hit three HR tonight and now have 160 HR on the season, third most in club history, trailing the 1987 season (club-record 168 HR) and 2003 season (162 HR). ÊÊ Mike Moustakas’ RBI single in the fourth snapped the Royals’ 0-for-20 skid with RISP dating back to ’s walk-off home run on Wednesday vs. Colorado…it was their first non-HR RBI since the seventh inning on Wednesday (Hosmer RBI single), snapping a streak of six consecutive runs scored via HR.

JAKOB JUNIS: His six wins (four as a starter) are most by a Royals rookie since the late Yordano Ventura (14) in 2014…in the Royals’ 49-year history, only one player drafted in the 29th round or later (as he was) has as many wins with Kansas City as Junis’ six: Jose Santiago (70th round in 1994) went 13-12 from 1997-2001. ÊÊ He’s held opponents to one-or-fewer run in three of his last four starts (also, Aug. 24 vs. Colorado and Aug. 6 vs. Seattle), accounting for the last three such starts by a Royals starter…the last Royals starter other than Junis to allow no more than one run was on July 31 at Baltimore (1 R in 7.0 IP). ÊÊ Set a career high with eight , surpassing his previous best of seven, done in two of his previous three starts (Aug. 24 vs. Colorado & Aug. 7 vs. Seattle). ÊÊ He’s the eighth Royals rookie to record at least eight strikeouts and no walks in a game and first since the late Yordano Ventura on May 5, 2014…he’s issued just one walk to his last 99 batters as a starter since the sixth inning on July 29 at Detroit, and has recorded 25 strikeouts during that stretch (25.2 IP). ÊÊ He’s 4-0 with a 2.86 ERA (9 ER in 28.1 IP) in his last six outings (four starts), after going 2-2, 5.66 ERA (22 ER in 35.0 IP) through his first eight (six starts). ÊÊ Retired 14 of his first 15 batters—the only batter reaching on a two-strike hit-by-pitch in the first inning—before allowing his first hit with two outs in the fifth… issued a pair of singles in the sixth, exiting after 5.2 scoreless innings, leading 2-0, in favor of Scott Alexander, who allowed one of the inherited runners to score on an RBI single by Logan Morrison…pitch count by inning: 16 (1st), 12 (2nd), 8 (3rd), 7 (4th), 15 (5th), 15 (6th), 73 total.

WHIT MERRIFIELD: Snapped the Royals’ scoreless streak at 45 innings—three shy of matching the Major League record—with a solo homer in the third inning, his 16th HR of the season—14th solo—15 of which have come as a second baseman, more than any Royal not named Frank White (17, 22, 22, 17 HR from 1984-87).

JORGE BONIFACIO: Hit a solo home run in the sixth inning vs. Alex Cobb, his 16th HR of the season—first since Aug. 13 at Chicago—most by a Royals rookie since Eric Hosmer hit 19 in 2011…his current 21.63 AB/HR ratio (16 HR in 346 at-bats) would rank third all-time among Royals rookies (min. 15 HR), trailing only Bob Hamelin in 1994 (13.00 AB/HR) and Bo Jackson in 1987 (18.00 AB/HR).

ERIC HOSMER: Hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning vs. Dan Jennings, his 22nd HR of the season, three shy of his career high from last season…it was his fifth HR vs. a left-handed and first since a solo shot off Derek Holland on July 23…he’s batting .306 (49-for-160) vs. LHP this season. ÊÊ Since batting .225 (20-for-89) in April, he’s batting .341/.404/.551 (139-for-408) with 21 HR and 70 RBI in 108 games since May 1.

RAYS: Lost for just the third time in nine games, falling back to two games under .500 (66-68) and are 3.5 games behind Minnesota for the second AL Wild Card spot. ÊÊ Clinched their sixth straight season series loss vs. Kansas City (now 2-4 in 2017) and are 10-29 (.256) vs. the Royals since 2012, the worst record of one team vs. any opponent in the Majors during that time (min. 20 games)…they’ve lost 18 of 21 at Kauffman Stadium during that stretch (all three wins were shutouts). ÊÊ Have homered in a season-high 10 straight games (22 HR total) and have 189 HR this season, putting them on pace to break the club record of 216 HR in 2016. ÊÊ Held to two runs on five hits after scoring 12 runs last night…they’ve averaged an American League low 3.45 runs per game (152 runs in 44 games) since the All-Star break, scoring three-or-fewer runs 25 times (56.8%).

ALEX COBB: Has lost his last three decisions over four starts, matching the longest losing streak of his career (also, May 27-June 7, 2014). ÊÊ Fell behind 1-0 on a solo HR to Whit Merrifield in the third and surrendered a solo shot to Jorge Bonifacio in the sixth, his career-high 13th HR vs. a right-hand- ed batter (previously, four HR in 2013 & ‘14)…of his last 15 HR allowed, 12 have been to RHB, but prior to this stretch, 13 of 48 HR in his career were vs. RHB. ÊÊ Had just one clean inning and allowed two hits with RISP, including a Mike Moustakas RBI single in the fourth…exited after 6.0 innings, trailing 3-2…pitch count by inning: 10 (1st), 10 (2nd), 15 (3rd), 26 (4th), 11 (5th), 13 (6th), 85 total…didn’t walk a batter for the second time this season (also, 8.0 IP on July 21 vs. Texas). ÊÊ Charged with three wild pitches in the fourth inning, becoming the first Rays pitcher with as many in one inning and the fifth (sixth time) in the Majors this season. ÊÊ He’s 5-4 with a 3.01 ERA (28 ER in 83.2 IP) and 1.03 WHIP in his last 13 starts—allowing three-or-fewer earned runs in all but two starts—after going 4-5 with a 4.52 ERA (37 ER in 73.2 IP) through his first 12 starts, allowing three-or-fewer earned runs in seven of those outings.

BRAD MILLER: Hit a solo home run in the seventh inning to cut the Rays’ deficit to one…it was his seventh HR of the season in 272 at-bats (38.86 AB/HR) after hitting a career-high 30 HR last season in 548 at-bats (18.27 AB/HR)…he’s 5-for-13 (.385) in his last four games after going 3-for-39 in his previous 14 games.

KANSAS CITY CHALLENGES: The Royals challenged out calls on at first base in the first & fifth innings…both calls were overturned (:51, :35 delay). ÊÊ Also challenged whether Lucas Duda was HBP on in the sixth inning, forcing runner back to first on steal attempt…call was overturned (1:39 delay). ÊÊ Royals replay specialist, Bill Duplissea, is a Major League best 21-for-28 (75.0%) on challenges in 2017 after leading the league at 69.2% (27-for-39) in 2016. HOME RUNS TEAM BATTER NO.
