The Evangeliary is a liturgical book containing only those portions of the four Gospels which are read during Mass, arranged according to the order of the liturgical calendar. The book is carried by a deacon during the procession in the beginning of Mass. The deacon carries the Evangeliary with the greatest respect and, in our church, places it on the altar. During the singing of the “Alleluja” before reading the Gospel, a deacon or priest with the same respect carries the Evangeliary to the ambo. The reverence toward the Gospel book is also emphasized by incensing that book three times (when incense is used during the Mass) and by kissing the book after the Gospel is read. Why give such attention to this book, to simple pages of paper? The answer is obvious. The Church always showed the greatest reverence to the Bible recognizing that it is the Word of God and the Word of Life. There is no surprise that in the Bible the four Gospels hold the most prominent place. The Gospel book symbolizes Jesus Christ Himself.

In Latin, the word Evangeliarium is used as a corresponding word for Evangeliary. Such inscription has also been placed on the special shelf in our vesting sacristy where we hold the Gospel book. In is not hidden in the cabinets but is displayed in a visible, decorated place to show that both the pastor of Corpus Christi and the deacons and the entire community of Corpus Christi regard the Evangeliary as the most valuable book in the world and want to show the greatest reverence to Jesus Christ our Lord. Historically, the Gospel book had a very ornate cover with gold, silver and precious stones on it. The cover of our Evangeliary, donated by our deacons Tom and Bill, also has a special ornamentation with the image of Jesus.

As Christians and Catholics, let’s try to show the greatest respect to the Bible not only in church or in the sacristy but at our homes and in any place it can be found (for example, in hotels). Do not be afraid to show reverence for the Bible. “Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father” (Mt. 10:33).

In Christ, Fr. Mark Jurzyk Pastor Bike Pilgrimage to Divine Mercy Church along the Great Western Trail

Join Fr. Mark and other bikers on a 10 mile bike ride to Divine Mercy Church in Lombard. The ride will take place on Saturday, July 8. We will begin with a blessing in the morning at Corpus Christi Church at 8:00 a.m. and then use the Great Western Trail to ride to Divine Mercy Church, 21W411 Sunset Ave., Lombard.

At Divine Mercy, we will visit the church and pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet. We will also enjoy games and a picnic on their beautiful grounds before riding back to Corpus Christi. (The option to carpool back will be available.)

To register, please fill out the form below and return it to the parish office or drop it in the Sunday collection basket by June 30th. Cost is $5 per person or $15 for family.

The Knights of Columbus will host a Soccer Challenge during the picnic portion of the event. This Challenge is a K. of C. Illinois State competition program designed for players to demonstrate their penalty kick skill. It is open to all boys and girls ages 9-14. Winners progress to the district, regional, state and international levels.

“We are many parts, but we are all one body. And the gifts we have, we are given to share.”

Our Corpus Christi Pastoral Commission is moving forward with some wide-ranging, but simple, priorities. Here is a summary of the initiatives we’ll be emphasizing this year and next year.

Combine Catholic Faith Events with Social/Family Events – Instead of separating parish life from social life, more of our faith celebrations are combining with social celebrations. Examples are the annual Christmas concert, a Mass for new parents, the Divine Mercy Chaplet and dinner, the Feast and the Taste of Corpus Christi, and a marriage anniversary Mass.

Offer Spiritual Opportunities to Everyone – We want to ensure that parishioners are aware of and take advantage of the many Catholic faith-building opportunities that are available in our local community and our Diocese. Take time to get closer to God at the annual Catholic Men’s Conference, at Bellarmine Jesuit retreats in Barrington, at the Carmelite Spiritual Center in Darien, or join the Diocese of Joliet Cursillo community.

Find Ways for Parishioners to Help People Face-to-Face – Don’t let others do it for you. Go outside your church doors to care for people in need. Our parish has many ways to help people in a face-to-face way: the Youth Mission Trip, DuPage PADS support, the St. Vincent DePaul Society, transitional housing sponsorship, the Council of Catholic Women, the traveling Rosary, the Respect Life white cross display, and our annual Lend-A-Hand event.

Publicize Parish Life at Our Social Events – Whenever we get together as a parish community, we plan to distribute reminders to everyone to let them know about the variety of our parish life at Corpus Christi. We’ll hand out flyers on Catholic faith celebrations, faith building opportunities, community outreach and our parish social activities.

Cycle Poland 2017 - Support Hospice Care June 24 – July 2 Cycle Poland is the primary fundraiser for The Alina Foundation, a British non-profit that provides medical supplies and equipment for rural and underfunded hospices in Poland. The foundation has raised over $200,000 for Polish hospices. The foundation is run by volunteers, so all donations are used entirely to purchase medical supplies, which

include everything from bandages and anti-bedsore July mattresses to EKG machines. 6 LIGHTHOUSE 7PM We coordinate with each hospice to determine their 13 LIGHTHOUSE 7PM needs. For example, in 2015 we donated 5 portable pulse-oxymeters to the Alma Spei Children’s 20 LIGHTHOUSE 7PM Hospice in Krakow. These devices allow terminally 20 LIGHTHOUSE 7PM ill children to be cared for in their family homes, rather than in an institution. This year we will ride 640 miles from Warsaw to Gdańsk and deliver medical supplies & equipment to 7 hospices: Warsaw, Toruń, Chojnice, Tczew, Olsztyn, Elbląg, and Gdańsk. Supplies will also be delivered separately to hospices in Będzin, Bielsko, Katowice, Gorlice, and Brzozów. To learn more about the Alina Foundation and its mis- sion, please visit www.alinafoundation.org. The Alina Foundation is a registered charity in the UK (No. 1137887).
