As the centrepiece, Christopher Hampson’s Storyville is the bittersweet fable of Nola, a farm girl who falls prey to unscrupulous characters and worldly desires, set to the haunting music of Kurt Weill. 4 Black History Month Opening Ceremony – Black Statues in London Saturday 1 October, 6.30pm-8pm Free – RSVP Enfield Council will be hosting a special evening to open this year’s Black History Month celebrations. Unbeknownst to many people, London is full of black statues – statues that represent Black people. Famous and not-so-famous people have been idolised in stone and other materials around the capital. Come and hear Avril Nanton give a presentation about these fascinating, interesting, intriguing and downright strange statues, memorials and busts which contribute to the rich heritage of the Black community in London. Statues such as Nelson Mandela are well known but what about the not-so-famous statues and memorials? Where are they? Why do they have statues? These and many other questions will be answered during the presentation. In addition, we will have music from the talented pupils of St Ignatius College and be launching our Black History Month 2016 Brochure. Among the speakers will be Sir Godfrey Palmer OBE, the first black professor in Scotland, Mrs. Helen Grant, the first black woman to be elected as a Conservative MP, and Leroy Logan, founder member of the Black Police Association. We hope their stories will provide inspiration and insight for young black people seeking an understanding of their own identities and roles in a rapidly changing society in which race is still a major issue. The Lovers Rock Monologue fuses timeless music and theatrical storytelling, giving the audience a humorous & realistic account of the Lover’s Rock lifestyle. Born in London, Lovers Rock defined a generation in the late ‘70s and ‘80s and is a huge influential sub-genre of reggae. It gave women a voice in the traditionally male-dominated realm of Reggae. Lovers Rock was also an integral part of Black British identity during a politically and socially unstable time.
