tudents who have signed up to the SVA service awards and who completed 32 or more hours of service this year

Papanews Community Edition Newsletter Date Friday 25th October 2019

Principal’s Perspective Kia Ora,

This week again focused on student achievement.

On Monday we held a ‘celebration of service’, led by the newly formed School Service Council, to acknowledge those students who had signed up for the service awards. Quill Yates a member of the Student Volunteer Army was the guest speaker, along with invited guests from Rotary, the Student Volunteer Army, City Council, and Schoolkit.

A number of staff, and forty students who had achieved at least 32 hours of service this year enjoyed a morning tea, and were acknowledged and thanked for their contribution to the school and wider community. I would like to thank staff and members of the Service Council for this new initiative and congratulate them on their success.

Tuesday saw the Sports Awards Evening. I would like to thank those who could attend for supporting this evening, and congratulate the students who achieved awards. (a full list of awards winners is in the sports section). The guest speaker was past student Janelle Cavanagh who has excelled in Touch, representing New Zealand, and also has a very successful business. We are always grateful when past students can come back into the school and share their story.

Following on from, the Sports Awards, on Thursday night was the ZONTA Sports Awards. This showcases the most talented athletes in Canterbury. It was a fantastic achievement to have 10 students as finalists over the six categories. I would like to congratulate them all.

Capping off the week was the Senior Art Exhibition which included a showcase of highly talented student work, an opportunity to bid on the live auction for art work, and the presentation of a number of awards.

This week was also our Service Council - Food Bank collection supporting the City Mission, and I would like to thank our school community for their generosity.

Next Friday, 1st November, we look forward to celebrating the Senior Prize Giving and Year 13 Graduation. This evening celebrates the success and talents of our students, and I invite all family and whānau to join us at 7.00pm at the Douglas Lilburn Auditorium, at the in Kilmore Street.

I hope that you have an opportunity to enjoy the long weekend. Jeff Smith

The Papanui High School Board of Trustees, Principal, staff, and students, invite you to our:

Senior Prize Giving Ceremony And Year 13 Graduation

Friday 1st November Douglas Lilburn Auditorium, Christchurch Town Hall, 7.00pm Please be seated by 6.45pm

Year 12 It’s that time of year again that all Year 12’s are all too familiar with; prepping for exams, finishing off those last few internals, and making sure to get all those boxes ticked before going on study leave. They know what is required, and are making great strides towards completing their second year of NCEA.

Along with focus in the classroom, the opportunities outside the classroom are continuing, particularly in being leaders at the school. It's been great to see over a third of the year group interested in being peer support leaders for the next intake or Year 9's. It’s also exciting to see the calibre of candidates wanting to be on the head student team next year. I'm looking forward to working with, and seeing how, the students involved in both these groups develop in their time in these positions.

It's been another great year, with many highlights and with Senior Prize Giving just around the corner, it will be a time to celebrate the successes of many.

Wishing everyone the best for the exam period, and the summer break.

Paul Anderson Year 12 Dean

ZONTA Awards Finalists

Congratulations to our Zonta Awards Finalists.

Congratulations to the ten finalists in making it through to the finals on Thursday night, with special mention to Gemma Harris, and the Senior Boys’ Para Cross Country Team of Finn Walker, Carl Te Tone Huia, and Jacob Lawson, on receiving “Highly Commended” in their categories.

Thanks to Mrs Scott, Mr Campfens, and all the parents for supporting our finalists this evening.

Service Celebration Monday saw over 50 students, staff, and invited guests gather at our first-ever Service Celebration. The aim was to say thank you to those students and staff who have volunteered over 32 hours of their time in service this year. It was a positive event and we were thrilled to have Quill Yates from the Student Volunteer Army to speak to us. Quill was very interactive and made us think about service and the way it makes us smile and connect with others. Congratulations to Alex Reeves (pictured right) who was awarded the Pounamu Trophy and pin for the most hours of service. Alex gave 332 hours to service this year, and that is awesome.

Papanui High School Service Council Multiple Sclerosis Fundraiser On Tuesday the 5th of November, the Head Student team will be holding a quiz night, fundraising for a staff member whose family is affected by Multiple Sclerosis. MS is a debilitating autoimmune disease, where the body’s own immune system attacks its tissues.

Please join us in the school hall for an unforgettable night of trivia, performances, food, and entertainment. To compete in the quiz, please get together in teams of 4 to 6 people. Tickets are $15 each and can be purchased from the Student Office. Food and refreshments will be provided. Additionally, there will also be a raffle with tickets at $2 so bring all your loose change! 100% of the proceeds will help to support Mr Stoddart and his wife’s treatment which is estimated to cost $100,000 NZD. Make sure to get in quick, so you don’t miss out on this fantastic night, as spaces are limited. We can't wait to see you there!

Queensland Touch Tournament The Senior Boys’ and Senior Girls’ Touch teams, plus two student referees, embarked on a trip to Australia from the 6th - 14th October. The purpose of the trip was to participate in the Queensland All Schools Touch Tournament in Brisbane. This is one of the largest Touch tournaments in the world, consisting of over 215 schools, 445 teams, and over 6000 players in the Under 13, Under 15, and Under 18 grades. For the days preceding the tournament the teams trained in 30+ degree heat, shopped, and visited tourist destinations including Dreamworld, and Surfers Paradise. The players were excited to start the tournament despite the thunder, lightning, and downpours. The boys competed well in their pool, coming away with three wins, and scoring some impressive tries. The girls improved throughout the tournament, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience of playing Queensland and Singaporean school teams.

Both teams would like to thank parents for their support and help with fundraising, Miss McConnel for the organisation, Miss Rutherford and Mr Smith for their impressive player management and physiotherapy work, and Mr Peawini and Miss Carson for the time given to coaching the teams.
