On the Occasion of the 65th Birthday of Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Wolfgang Franz, President of the ZEW Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Wolfgang Franz

On the 7 January 2009, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Wolfgang Franz will celebrate his 65th birthday. Since becoming ZEW president in 1997 he has played a significant role in shaping the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW). He has restructured and streamlined the ZEW, making it one of the leading economic research institutes in Germany and Europe, while strengthening its excellent scientific reputation both domestically and abroad. Under Franz’s leadership, the ZEW has also become a highly sought partner for economic policy counselling.

Franz’s main areas of research are macroeconomics, labour economics, and empirical economic research. His renowned textbook on labour market economics, titled Arbeitsmarkt- ökonomik, is one of the standard references for labour market research in Germany.

The extent to which he is appreciated as a policy advisor is shown by the fact that he is the only member of the German Council of Economic Experts (Sachverständigenrat zur Begut- achtung der gesamtwirtschaftlichen Entwicklung) to receive nomination for a third term in office. Franz is an advisor to the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology and member of the Innovationsrat Baden-Württemberg, the Kronberger Kreis, and the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. Moreover, he is a senator at the Leopoldina Academy, the German Academy of Sciences.

In recognition of his outstanding achievements in the fields of science and policy advisement, Franz was conferred with an honorary doctorate by both the European Business School (ebs) International University Schloss Reichartshausen and the Otto-von-Guericke University in Magdeburg in 2003. Furthermore, he has been awarded the Order of Merit by the German state of Baden-Württemberg.

Franz was born in Nassau/Lahn, Germany, in 1944. He studied economics at the and obtained a doctorate on a macroeconometric analysis of the German labour market under Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Heinz König. As a research fellow Franz spent two years at Harvard and at the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, Mass. In 1981 he habilitated on the problem of youth unemployment. His career path led him first from a position as professor at the Johannes Gutenberg-University in Mainz to the in 1984 before he accepted a chair at the . Although he was offered chairs at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich and Humboldt University in Berlin, Franz stayed in Konstanz until 1 April 1997, when he took on the position of president at the Centre for European Economic Research in Mannheim and accepted a chair of economics at the University of Mannheim. By Car After exiting the A6 motorway, head towards the centre of Mannheim. At the planetarium follow the street signs to the left towards “Universität”. Once you have passed the train station you will drive on a street called Bismarckstraße. Turn to your left between the blocks L 9 and L 11, keep going straight, and then turn right at the next corner. You will see the ZEW in front of you – a cream- coloured building with blue window frames (block L7). To get to the Mannheimer Schloss stay on Bismarckstraße until you see the palace on your left.

After you have left the A61 motorway, drive towards Ludwigshafen/Mannheim. Ignore signs indicating Mannheim/BASF/Gartenstadt and keep on driving in one of the two left lanes until you reach a large bridge. Pass the bridge in the right lane. On your left you will see a palace – the Mannheimer Schloss. At the second traffic light turn to your right onto a street called Bismarckstraße. Turn to your right again between the blocks L 9 and L 11, keep going straight, and then turn right at the next corner. You will see the ZEW in front of you – a cream-coloured building with blue window frames (block L7).

You can park your car on Bismarckstraße at the west wing of the palace. Please be aware that the parking lot is only open until 10 p.m. Additional parking is available at the central train station.

By Foot From the central train station you can reach the ZEW and the Mannheimer Schloss in just a few minutes by foot. When leaving the train station, cross the tramway and then turn to your left in front of the houses. Proceed straight for roughly 500 metres until you see a cream-coloured building with blue window frames facing you – the ZEW (block L7). To get to the Mannheimer Schloss walk past the ZEW and turn to your right. Keep on walking until you reach the multilane Bismarckstraße and then turn to your left, following the course of the road along the palace (the Mannheimer Schloss). Cross the Ehrenhof (centre court) and enter the Rittersaal via the historic palace entrance.

From Mannheimer Schloss to ZEW by Foot Leave the palace (the Mannheimer Schloss) via the historic entrance towards Bismarckstraße and follow the course of the road to the right. Turn right again between the two blocks L5 and L7, and keep on walking until you will see a cream-coloured building with blue window frames on your left – the ZEW (block L7).
