November 2013 Editorial The Diamond 12 Car

Just a few words to brighten up the increasingly dull and drizzly 22 November days. What an edition this is – world record beating four pages! Please help GMC celebrate our 60th anniversary by Many, many thanks to the contributors. Report from Dave Pegg from the CSMA,organiser of the It is good to see that the Topographia Rally is still running and Topographia which was held on the 13th October. even more delightful to see very familiar names competing too. Unfortunately, Sunday did not provide typical Topo weather! We Jules Golbey and Bob Blows demonstrated by coming first that have been lucky over the years with having fair weather. Sunday those little grey cells are still functioning – quite extraordinary! was grotty and there was a lot of water laying in the country lanes of which there were quite a few! Other complications on If that weren’t wonderful enough Mark and Lorraine Feeney Sunday were a triathlon going on near Mortimer (question 11) and Steve and May (Tabby? – where did that come from?) Cole with runners and cyclists in the road. John Wilkins joined the came 8th and 6th. All I can say is what solid relationships they runners to get to the answer on the bridge! There was also a must both have to be able to spend a rainy day differentiating ploughing match near Kingsley and a tree down near . footpaths from bridleways and foraging for words at the Despite all this, Jules Golbey and Bob Blows sailed (or swam?) bottom of poles sunk in grass. How proud GMC is of our very through the event. Bob said when he left in the morning that the able rallyists – keep it up – and meanwhile – a few little words event seemed easier this year. That was probably true as the 40 pointers did contain some pylon lines. Oh no I hear you cry. accrued maximum points answering all the 40 pointers! Bob had misplotted the Liss Forest railway bridge at Alton which cost them Happy Motoring some time! I imagine preparation is key with Bob and that he probably has a gazetteer with all spot heights and places of interest listed for the local map and that pylon lines etc are Annette & Robert highlighted. A 30 year knowledge of the local map helps as it did with the runners up. Well done to Jules and Bob for the umpteenth time! Bob did also point out my smaller error on the In Tune day. The footpath in question 17 was a bridleway! Fortunately you all knew what I meant it seems. In Tune is produced on the third Wednesday of each month preceding the cover date. Thank you. Thank you to Howard and Jane Johnson for spotting the problem. Magazine Editors It meant they and some others had wasted the best part of an Annette & Robert Clayson. hour working on the wrong questions. Fortunately Tim at The Page 1

New Inn ran off some correct copies for me and most crews affected had not reached at those questions. However the award winning crews from last year having started work on the harder question first put in a lot of wasted time. Sincere apologies to those crews particularly. Fortunately, it did not seem to affect the Madgwicks or Whites too much as both finished before the official opening time of 17.15. The former had answered all 40 pointers and the latter 3. Question 15 unfortunately caught out a number of crews. I asked for what was written at the base of the post. The answer was JACS. A number of crews gave the phone number or mentioned “Wild Flower Verge” but some got it right. The answer was buried in the grass and did entail getting out in the wet! The Regularity Class Winner the Lancia Fulvia waits for the off at The Madgwicks and Whites were joint runners up and as time could not separate them, they each went home with one trophy. Mercedes Benz World Well done to Steve and Tabby Cole for picking up the Best Mixed Crew award as there was plenty of competition on that front. The event started from Battersea Power Station and took in Well done also to Pam Roper and Martin Boyes who picked up stages at Mercedes Benz World, Dunsfold, Farnborough Airport the Best Novices award for which, again, there was plenty of and Laverstoke to finish in Chelsea. David I meanwhile headed off to stop near Cutmill pond. First through were the regularity cars on their way to Farnborough Airport. Mini Britannia After a considerable wait the competition cars came through obviously running later than scheduled. The Mini Britannia, a one day version of the Tour Britannia took place on the 7th October. It was planned to run the event month Often with this type of event these days the entire Road Book is earlier. It ended up with a relatively small entry 15 cars in the published on the web. After leaving Farnborough they were competition category and 12 cars in the regularity. Despite the heading to Laverstoke. From the road book I could see that just low entry there were a number of interesting cars; Ferrari 275, after Greywell the route split the regularity cars turned off to do Lancia Fulvia, Jaguar C Type, Renault Alpine, Sunbeam Rapier and their regularity section, the details of this were handed to out at extremely nice looking Escort RS 1800. the Time Control at Farnborough hence I wasn’t sure of their exact route. I got to the split and parked up I had a feeling that some of the cars had already gone through. I was right whilst there an MG Midget came through and a later the Ferrari which over shot the junction! As it appeared the competition cars were still behind their scheduled time I opted to drive onto Dummer where the road goes under the M3. A little wait and the cars started to come along firstly a trio of 911’s in close company the remainder coming past in irregular intervals. Then time to head home and sort out the pictures!
