Pedigree Book 2 SUNSHINE RANCH John Balkenbush RR 3 Box 339 Conrad, Montana 59425 406-278-3569 Home 406-788-3366 Cell sunshinehorse.com 406-278-3569 Sunshine Ranch RR 3 Box 339 406-788-3366 Conrad, MT 59425 John Balkenbush Conrad, Montana is in north-central Montana, just at the base of the Rocky Mountains and sixty miles south of the Canadian border. We have a small ranch operation in the heart of the Golden Triangle, an area known for its small grain production. This is farm country, but there are still enough ranchers in Montana who need good horses for their cattle operations, for pleasure riding, and a horse that can perform in the arena. Our goal is to produce a nice all around ranch, pleasure, and arena horse. We want a horse that looks and acts like the horse the AQHA was founded for, the Foundation Quarter Horse. Our horses have good feet, straight legs with adequate bone, plenty of muscle on a balanced frame, and a nice head with a soft eye. We offer a complete horse with plenty of action and a lot of cow; a horse that is easy to train and nice to have in your family operation. We believe mares are the heart of our breeding program. We have 40 mares running with 3 stallions in the breaks of the Dry Fork of the Marias River. Our mares are all up close or condensed Joe Hancock or Driftwood bloodlines. This combination has produced our ideal ranch, pleasure, and arena horse. We offer our horses for sale in the Balkenbush-DeBruycker production sale every two years in Conrad, Montana. We do sell foundation breeding stock, young fillies and stallion prospects private treaty at the ranch. Pease understand that these stallions and mares represent our “keepers”, and are not for sale at this time. You are more than welcome to view the horses at any time. Please stop by or phone. We’d love to show you our program. Thank You, John & Candy Foundation Driftwood Quarter Horses Hancock Contents Starbert C Ed ............................................... 4 #25. (December 1997) Mary Catherine Wilheit, A. B., Wilson College Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. John L. Canup Obedience Robins emigrated to Virginia in the 1620s in search of the land and status his elder brother gained by inheritance. This thesis establishes motivations for immigration and methods by which one English emigr6 achieved success in Virginia. The 1582 will of Richard Robins established a pattern of primogeniture for successive generations of his Northamptonshire family. Muster lists, wills, parish registers and a 1591 manor survey record increasing prosperity and associated expectations. Robinses were among those "better sorts" who paid taxes, provided armour, held local office, educated their children, and protcstcd against perceived government injustice. In Virginia. Richard Robins*s great grandson parlayed his assets into land, office and status. The extent of his education and financial resources was probably limited, but good health, timing.

Wright 1 OFF THE ROAD Imperialism And Exploration In The American Road Movie “Road movies are too cool to address serious socio-political issues. Instead, they express the fury and suffering at the extremities of a civilized life, and give their restless protagonists the false hope of a one-way ticket to nowhere.” –Michael Atkinson, quoted in “The Road Movie Book” (1). “‘Imperialism’ means the practice, the theory, and the attitudes of a dominating metropolitan center ruling a distant territory; ‘colonialism’, which is almost always a consequence of imperialism, is the implanting of settlements on distant territory” –Edward Said, Culture and Imperialism (9) “I am still a little bit scared of flying, but I am definitely far more scared of all the disgusting trash in between places” -Cy Amundson, This Is Not Happening “This is gonna be exactly like Eurotrip, except it’s not gonna suck” -Kumar Patel, Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay Wright 2 Off The Road Abstract: This essay explores the imperialist nature of the American road movie as it is defined by the film’s era of release, specifically through the lens of how road movies abuse the lands that are travelled through.

THE AMBLING INFLUENCE end up in the ASB PART 1 The American Saddlebred Horse is famous for his Cave drawings from the Steppes of Asia (http://www.spanishjennet.org/history.shtml). gaits, but where do these gaits come from? Gaited horses have been around for many years, but how did they end up in the American Saddlebred? This series of articles will take you from the dawn of the gaited horse through to the modern day Saddlebred, look at the genetics behind the ambling gait and give you some pointers as to the physique of the gaited horse. What is a gaited horse anyway? Every pace of the horse, be it walk, trot or canter, is called a “gait”. For the gaited enthusiast, any horse can do these gaits, what they are interested in is the smooth non-jarring English palfrey, cc 1795 – 1865. lateral gait (the legs on one side moving together). (http://www.1st-art-gallery.com/John- This “gait” comes in many guises and names Frederick-Herring-Snr/My-Ladye's-Palfrey.html). depending on the collection, speed and length of stride of the horse, as well as the individual breed of the horse. It is the specific pattern of footfall and the cadence that defines the gait in each of the gaited breeds. A quiet horse may well have a better gait than his flashy fast-moving counterpart, so look beyond the hype and see exactly what those feet and hindquarters are doing. This smooth-moving gait has been depicted in cave walls and fossilised in footprints dating to over 3½ million years ago – so just how did it get from there Lady Conaway's Spanish Jennet to the American Saddlebred? We know that horses (http://www.spanishjennet.org/registry.shtml) are not native to America, so to answer that question we must travel back in time and place to Europe and Asia.

  • . . the Big Investment Part 2 This Month’S “Working Lines” Is Going to Take a Closer Look at the Sire Record of the Big Investment
The Working Lines By Larry Thornton . The Big Investment Part 2 This month’s “Working Lines” is going to take a closer look at the sire record of The Big Investment. Last month we saw that The Big Investment brought a new style to the modern pleasure horse. A style that was based on this wonderful conformation. This month we will look at what a bright future this sire had before his untimely death in 1986 at the age of six. Then we will look at one of the reasons why the influence of The Big Investment may continue through his offspring. The Big Investment sired only 129 foals with 93 of them being born in his 1986 and 1987 foal crops. He sired 74 AQHA performers with 66 point earners that have earned 63ROMs and 27 Superior Awards. This gives him an average of 89% point earners/ performers. This gives him 48.8% ROM from foals produced. He has an average of 56 points per performer. Here is an interesting side note on PHOTO BY PAMELA SNOW The Big Investment’s sire record. The McWhirters have retained 20 daughters or 15% of The Big “...what a bright future this sire had before his un- Investment’s foals as broodmares. timely death in 1986 at the age of six.” Most of these mares have not been shown. • Early History of Thoroughbred Horses in Virginia (1730-1865)
Early History of Thoroughbred Horses in Virginia (1730-1865) Old Capitol at Williamsburg with Guests shown on Horseback and in a Horse-drawn Carriage Virginia History Series #11-08 © 2008 First Horse Races in North America/Virginia (1665/1674) The first race-course in North America was built on the Salisbury Plains (now known as the Hempstead Plains) of Long Island, New York in 1665. The present site of Belmont Park is on the Western edge of the Hempstead Plains. In 1665, the first horse racing meet in North America was held at this race-course called “Newmarket” after the famous track in England. These early races were match events between two or three horses and were run in heats at a distance of 3 or 4 miles; a horse had to complete in at least two heats to be judged the winner. By the mid-18th century, single, "dash" races of a mile or so were the norm. Virginia's partnership with horses began back in 1610 with the arrival of the first horses to the Virginia colonies. Forward thinking Virginia colonists began to improve upon the speed of these short stocky horses by introducing some of the best early imports from England into their local bloodlines. Horse racing has always been popular in Virginia, especially during Colonial times when one-on-one matches took place down village streets, country lanes and across level pastures. Some historians claim that the first American Horse races were held near Richmond in Enrico County (now Henrico County), Virginia, in 1674. A Match Race at Tucker’s Quarter Paths – painting by Sam Savitt Early Racing in America Boston vs Fashion (The Great Match Race) Importation of Thoroughbreds into America The first Thoroughbred horse imported into the American Colonies was Bulle Rock (GB), who was imported in 1730 by Samuel Gist of Hanover County, Virginia.

  • Leo Leo, a 1940 Stallion Sired by Joe Reed II and Out
5/20/2020 Leo – Oklahoma Quarter Horse Association Leo Leo, a 1940 stallion sired by Joe Reed II and out of Little Fanny, is by any measurement, one of the all time great sires of the Quarter Horse world. Displaying considerable speed himself by winning 20 of his 22 starts, it was his reputation as a sire that made him famous. Bud Warren of Perry, Oklahoma bought Leo in 1947 after achieving considerable success with two of his daughters, Flit and Leota W. Champions Palleo Pete, Miss Meyers, Mona Leta and Bobbie Leo proved his ability to produce speed. An all time leading sire of broodmares, Leo’s daughters produced 14 Champions, including Little Blue Sheep, Kid Meyers and an All American Futurity winner, Goetta. His most famous daughter, Garrett’s Miss Pawhuska – who will be inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame in about 2 months – produced Champions Vanetta Dee, Vannevar and Vandy’s Flash. In addition to speed, Leo’s foals exhibited excellent conformation, Athletic ability, quiet dispositions and common sense. Famous Leo bred cutting horses include Peppy San, Mr. San Peppy and King’s Pistol, and an AQHA Champion reining horse, Okie Leo. https://okqha.org/portfolio-item/leo/ 1/2 5/20/2020 Leo – Oklahoma Quarter Horse Association Administered by the AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum, the Historical Marker program of the AQHA Foundation perpetuates the history of the American Quarter Horse. Leo is one of only three horses to have had a Historical Marker erected in his honor. It was dedicated in September 1969 in Perry, Oklahoma.
