About Australia Limited (WPA) is the peak governing body for the sport of . There are over 19,000 registered water polo players in Australia and another 9,000 playing in schools. The administration of the is organised in a federated structure. Currently, all Australian states and territories (except the NT) comprise the voting and financial members of WPA. Recently provision has also been included to permit licensed Australian Water Polo League Clubs to apply for membership. Each member state runs its own local competitions and is administered by a Board Committee and a small number of paid staff. Volunteers are an important asset at the state level. Water polo is the oldest Olympic team sport. Both the Australian men’s team (the Sharks) and the women’s (the Stingers) will compete at the deferred Tokyo 2020ne Olympics. The Sharks finished 2nd in the 2018 World Cup. The Stingers have won a medal at three of the five Olympics since women’s water polo was introduced as an Olympic sport at the games in 2000, where they were Olympic champions. Australia also competes in the Junior and Youth World Championships for boys and girls which supports and forms part of the elite pathway to senior international success. The sport has three sources of funding; • Government grants. Commonwealth grants are determined and distributed by (SA), state grants are made directly to the state associations • Player capitation fees collected on an annual basis, together with club affiliation fees • Commercial sponsorships. WPA’s aggregate revenue for the 4 years up to the Tokyo Olympics will be approximately $25m. Sport Australia has been actively encouraging SA funded sports to adopt SA’s recommended governance structures and practices, including by reviewing their organisational structure with the aim of providing a more consistent approach nationally and reducing duplication. As a result, in consultation with stakeholders, WPA has established a national strategic framework and aligned national and state operating plans and behaviours are being developed in pursuit of this strategic framework. The Board The Board has delegated powers to Committees to assist the Board in discharging its duties in certain areas. These Committees include: • Finance, Risk & Audit Committee • Nominations Committee • Governance Committee • High Performance Committee • Sport Development Committee.

Board Competencies

Competency/Attribute Description

Board/ Governance Board and/or Senior Executive experience reporting to a governing body Experience with an understanding of current good corporate governance practice ensuring compliance not only with the relevant legislation, regulations and laws, but also current community expectations of governing bodies. Business experience A broad range of commercial experience, but particularly in areas such as communications, marketing, branding, business systems, information technology, human resources and/or process improvement.

Water Polo knowledge An understanding of the history of and current approaches to water polo in Australia and overseas. High performance Coach, administrator or player experience in a high performance sporting sport understanding environment.

Community sport Understanding and implementation of community sport initiatives to drive experience junior development and broader participation. Financial performance Qualifications and experience in accounting and/or finance and the ability to: • Analyse financial statements and key financial metrics • Critically assess financial viability and performance • Contribute to strategic financial planning • Oversee budgets and the efficient use of resources • Oversee funding arrangements and accountability. Legal Qualifications and experience in legal practice, but particularly with emphasis on: • Sports Industry • Not-for-Profit Associations • Employment law • Health & Safety. Marketing and Knowledge of and experience in marketing services to communications members/customers/other stakeholders and public promotion campaigns. Understanding of communication with stakeholders through a range of relevant communication channels including social media strategies.

Government relations Experience in managing government relations, dealings with government and regulators and in industry and/or project advocacy strategies. Competency/Attribute Description
