Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, + Pax et Bonum! Welcome to St. Maria Goretti Parish on this the Third Sunday of our 2020 Season of Lent! We continue to persevere in our sacrifices, our prayer, and our almsgiving to show our love and commitment to Jesus Christ! We welcome all of our guests and visitors who are joining us for Masses this weekend. We are honored to have you here to pray with us this weekend. And in a special way we want to welcome our brothers and sisters who are in town this weekend for sports events at Grand Park. Thanks for making the time to join us for Mass! This is our second weekend under the new prohibition of the distribution of the Precious Blood at Masses. On March 6, what was a “strong recommendation” from the ’s Office became a mandatory directive. This is obviously a direct result of the concerns over the Coronavirus and the severe examples of influenza that are paralyzing our country and our world at this time. We pray for cure and vaccines to be discovered soon, and we pray that our health officials find new ways to curb the spread of the disease, and we pray for those for whom these sicknesses are life-and-death situations. We all want and must do everything we can to keep one another safe and healthy. If you are sick this spring with the flu, or a cold, or anything, please remember that it is NOT a sin to miss Mass IF you are sick. In fact, it could be a sin if you came to Mass sick and passed that sickness on to your brothers and sisters. Please stay home if you are sick, and get well! We’ll pray for you here at St. Maria Goretti. I have been asked already, a couple of times, that if we are not doing the Cup, then why does the continue to use the Chalice. Good question! For it to be a valid Mass, the priest must consume both the Body and Blood of our Lord at the Mass and from the Mass that he celebrates. There is no choice for the priest. Every Mass is going to have the consecration of the Blood. It has to have this. What has changed these last couple of weeks is the offering of the consecrated Blood of Christ to the congregation. It is because of this that we will continue to send the Chalice that the priest uses home with a family as the Cup. The other big news from last weekend was the announcement from our Diocese of the new priest assignments, as part of the United in Heart initiative, to prepare our Diocese for the future. As we mentioned last weekend, St. Maria Goretti is getting a new Pastor! Fr. Brian Dudzinski, the current Pastor of St. Patrick’s Parish in Kokomo, will become the new Pastor of St. Maria Goretti effective June 29. I am very excited about this. Fr. Dudzinski is a close, personal friend of mine, and one of our Diocese’s very best . He loves Jesus very much and would do anything and everything that he had to, to take care of the Body of Christ, the Church. The other part of the new assignments here at St. Maria Goretti, that I am also very happy about, is that both Fr. Mike and I will stay on here, to assist and work with Fr. Dudzinski, as Senior Associates. And while I am still getting used to that term, “Senior Associate,” I am extremely grateful to Bishop Doherty for letting me stay on here at this time in my life to continue to serve at St. Maria Goretti. This is very unusual. It is being done so that I can continue my battle with Multiple Myeloma with my friends at I.U. Health North and also still have the support and prayers of this community as I do so. Again, I thank Bishop Doherty for the consideration and concern. I am also grateful to Fr. Derek Aaron for all he has done here. Fr. Aaron has stayed very busy being Assistant Vocation Director and serving part-time here at St. Maria Goretti. Fr. Aaron will continue as Assistant Vocation Director for the Diocese but will be moving to the new Pastorate at Holy Spirit/Geist and St. John Vianney to help with parish duties. Later on, we will have a proper send off and a chance to say thank you to him. Please keep all the priests of our Diocese in your prayers. The changes are massive and all of them should be listed in The Catholic Moment this week. This weekend is the Men’s Christ Renews His Parish weekend. Let us keep our brothers in our prayers this weekend and throughout this week. And don’t forget our Lenten Penance Service this Thursday, March 19, at 7pm. If you haven’t been to Confession this Lent, you need to be here Thursday night. In Christ, Fr. Kevin An idea is a curious thing—it will not work unless you do.

For more than 24 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but with everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all do—our Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you! God Bless you. —Father Kevin St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church · Westfield, IN | 3
