ART COLLECTION

Hotel Murano is named after Murano, Italy – an island off the coast of Venice that has long been home to generations of glassblowers and is famed as the Old-World capital of glass art. In celebration of the Pacific Northwest’s central role in the modern glass art movement, a curated international collection of 20th-century works in glass are on prominent display, featuring a mix of site-specific commissioned pieces and acquisitions from studios and galleries around the globe. More than 45 glass artists from around the world are showcased, making every step in the hotel an artful journey

The hotel’s front entrance is home to Orizon, Costas Varotsos’ 104-foot tall, large-scale glass masterpiece that was created specifically for Hotel Murano. Works in the lobby include American glass art icon Dale Chihuly, Massimo Micheluzzi’s blown-and-silvered sea anemone-like chandelier and Karen LaMonte’s Pianist’s Dress, a life-sized floor-length gown made of cast glass.

Hotel Murano functions like a gallery, educating and inspiring with international talent and the individual story of each artist. On every guest room floor, upon exiting the elevator, visitors are greeted by a work from a highlighted artist and panels telling his or her story and the process behind the piece. A walk down the corridor to their room includes additional photography and studio drawings that relay the inspiration and process for the featured piece of art.

Artful partnerships have also been forged with local museums to bring an added local perspective. Works are on display from the Kids Design Glass program at Tacoma’s renowned Museum of Glass and from students of Hilltop Artists, a youth program co-founded by Chihuly. Guests can purchase the Hilltop student artwork with all proceeds going directly back to the program.

Docent-led tours of the collection at Hotel Murano can be arranged to guests and non-guests. Tours need to be booked in advance ($5/person fee).
