The dingy common bathroom needs an overhaul. 3

The Homeowners: Edward and Eleanor The Residence: 3-room HDB resale flat at Tampines Street 21 Size: 743sqft Renovation Period: 19 July to 10 September 2013 (7 weeks) Budget: $60,000 to $65,000 (inclusive of furnishing) The colourful cabinets & pipes The Interior Designer: Russell Chin from Inspire look less than funky in this by D’Trenzo Pte Ltd kitchen.

11 Before the Makeover

At only $12,000 Cash-Over-Valuation (COV), this 3-room HDB flat located at Tampines Street 21 was a real bargain for Edward and Eleanor after much house-hunting, but its original state left much to be desired. Take the master bedroom for instance, it was painted in a tired- looking shade of green that did nothing to enhance the aesthetics of the room. Over in the kitchen, the neon cabinets and pipes came across as a poor attempt to brighten up the the space. Even the common bathroom, though functional, was not exactly a feast for the eyes. Edward, who scoured numerous renovation websites and did multiple research in search of a suitable interior designer, finally decided that Russell Chin from Inspire by D'Trenzo Pte Ltd would be the guy to transform the typical HDB flat into the home of his dreams. The couple had met Russell at an interior design expo and were impressed by his professionalism. Russell also gave helpful suggestions and advice that resonated with the homeowners. “He gives me a sense of confidence, because he knows what he is talking about. He is realistic and helpful,” Edward said. The camaraderie between Edward and Russell was obvious too, which naturally made it easy for them to work towards realising the homeowners' home sweet home.

Homeowners' Wish List

Edward is a Japanese culture enthusiast, so he initially wanted a traditional Zen look for his flat while Eleanor preferred something more contemporary. In the Theme end, they decided to go for a contemporary Zen design that will unify both ›› elements. This meant that the focus will be on a sleek and fuss-free design that will be complemented by platforms, tatami mats and sliding doors.

There was some deliberation on the feature wall design, but what most concerned the couple was how the rest of the wall space should look like. In Living the end, Edward and Eleanor decided to paint it using Cocoa from Nippon Room Paint after browsing through various wallpaper options. The feature wall ›› itself will be dressed in a lovely wood laminate, which will in turn draw the eyes towards the false ceilings above—giving the illusion of spaciousness.

12 The kitchen, especially, should be easy-to-maintain although Edward, a former chef who specialised in Japanese food for six years, intends to use an induction hob for light and non-oily dishes. “I'm not a clean freak, but I do want to keep my dishes light and use as little oil as possible,” he said. To give Kitchen it a streamlined look, Russell suggested a white and neutral palette that will ›› be complemented by glossy piano-finish white cabinets. Edward also wanted a display case above the bar counter to showcase his sake collection, but Russell advised against it as it will be a hassle to clean it. A dining light, on the other hand, will make a beautiful statement in the minimalistic kitchen.

Here, the room will take its cue from from the traditional Japanese culture that Edward is so fond of. Wood will be the leading material used Bedroom for the platform, which will cover almost the entire room, as well as the ›› feature wall and headboard. Its accompanying bathroom will balance the wooden theme with a grey palette.

Special Request A display rack to showcase Edward's three mountain bikes ››

After the Makeover

After 7 weeks of renovation work, the 3-room flat is finally complete and boy, is the transformation stunning. The overall theme may be minimalistic, but the little touches throughout the home infused it with warm cosiness. Take the kitchen for example. Cove lighting is rarely used due to its cost, but you've got to admit that its addition here makes a huge difference as it attracts your eyes upwards and makes the space feel bigger. Meanwhile the Scandinavian-inspired pendant light over the bar counter acts as a point of interest. The bedroom itself underwent the most drastic change. From its previous dingy self, the space is now a delightful retreat reminiscent of a beach resort. A wooden platform with hidden storage now covers most of the floor, giving the room a sturdy rustic feel. There are no tatami mats here, but it still feels rather tranquil. A few steps away from the bed is the sink that had been moved from its original position in the bathroom. Edward explained that the relocation was to provide more space in the bathroom, so that it'll feel less cramped.

Edward seemed pleased with the final outcome, although there were The some small but inevitable hiccups. “Overall it's quite good,” he said Verdict before adding that he will recommend Russell to a couple of his friends ›› who had just gotten their homes.

Gas Hob • utilises natural gas, propane or other types of flammable gas as a source of fuel • usually found in Asian kitchens where dishes are 01 commonly cooked by stir-frying or other methods involving oil • gives off a lot of heat and makes the kitchen hot • may be more troublesome to clean 02 Induction Hob • its hard-wearing glass cooking surface will only heat up when ferromagnetic (ferrous) metal cookware is placed on it, hence you're less likely to get burnt if you touch it by accident • requires enamelled steel pans, stainless steel pans with a magnetic base, cast iron pans or cookware that allows a magnet to stick to its bottom • recommended to use pans that are of the same diameter as the cooking zone you're using • gives off little heat so the kitchen stays cool

Ceramic Hob • has a toughened glass surface with cooking zones that will glow red when they are switched on • cookware that are typically used on an induction hob can also be used on a ceramic hob • flat-based copper pans are also suitable • recommended to use pans that are of the same diameter as the cooking zone you're using • slower cooking time as its cooking zones take longer to heat up or cool down • easy to clean but need to be careful not to scratch or allow food spills (especially those with high sugar 03 content) to dry on the surface as it might cause uneven surfaces and reduce the cooktop's efficiency

Expand Your Small

BathroomBy Lilian Wu A tiny bathroom doesn't necessarily mean the end of the world. We look at four areas in the bathroom you can improve upon to enlarge its visual space.

As the average home size becomes smaller in Singapore, the claustrophobic factor of the bathroom inevitably goes up the scale as well. Instead of being resigned to the tiny space you're afforded, there are some tricks to achieving a more luxurious feel. In fact, let's take a look at four major areas that explain why small bathrooms often feel so closed-in and how you can counter them. SOLUTION: PROBLEM 1: LIGHT There are three types of light that, when utilised in a proper manner, can really open Light can make all the difference up your bathroom: in a small bathroom because it gives the space an uplifting effect and highlights your fixtures/colour palette beautifully. Natural light is the best, of course, but appropriately installed lights are just as effective. Most people, however, settle for a single ceiling light to take care of illumination. This often results in inadequate or overly harsh lighting Task light provides illumination for that gives the bathroom a washed functional purposes like grooming or out appearance. putting on make-up. The key is to surround the face with light that is not too glaring, but should be adequately bright, flattering and minimises shadows on the face. In this case, lights or a wall sconce mounted on either side of the mirror will do the trick wonderfully. If the room dimensions or designs don't allow you the luxury of side lights, then ensure that the light fixture over the mirror is long enough to light up your face evenly e.g. vanity lights. Accent light adds interest to a particular area or gives added dimension to the room Ambient light design. So if you want to show off your fills in for natural gorgeous tiles or washbasin, then spotlights light—an overall are ideal. illumination of the space. This is Isn't it interesting to know that there are usually fulfilled by not one, but three types of lighting that can the central light improve the appearance of your bathroom fixture on the and make it seem more luxurious? ceiling, which is Once you understand how they work, you'll often a surface- be in a better position to choose lights that mounted LED accentuate all the right features but keep lighting. You things well-lit in the proper manner.

PROBLEM 2: COLOUR We all know the drill; light colours make the space seem larger because they reflect light. Darker colours, on the other hand, absorb light so they tend to cause a room to shrink into itself. But sometimes, even bright colours can be a little too severe or even reduce your perception of the room.

SOLUTION: There are two things you ought to know about colours: warm colours advance while cool colours recede. What this really means is that warm colours tend to stimulate the senses so it makes a room feel more intimate. Cool colours, on the other hand, have a more calming effect and retreats into the background to give the space a more expansive feel. To give you a better idea of what constitutes warm and cool colours, here is a simple colour

Whites with warm prefer white, undertones advance while whites with cool a degree undertones recede. of interest Another thing to note when choosing can still your colours is this: keep the colours of be added both your walls and ceiling within the by going same family. In other words, avoid starkly for colours contrasting colours because this will cut with a little up your space into blocks and severely sheen, which reduce the amount of visual space of your reflects light, bathroom e.g. bright red walls and white or a subtle ceiling. Your eyes will also be drawn to the undertone contrast between wall and ceiling, thereby like peach, pink and yellow. Nippon Paint lowering your perception of the ceiling's has plenty of such colours for you to height. So keep things flowing with similar choose from so don't just settle for boring colours and your bathroom will be less old white. Spice things up a little! Just confined by visible boundaries.

PROBLEM 3: FIXTURES AND ACCESSORIES Many bathrooms lack visual space due to the fixtures and accessories within them. Some are overly big and take up too much space. Others are on the small side, yet they do nothing to expand the perception of the bathroom's size.

SOLUTION: Here are a few examples that you shouldn't ignore while designing your bathroom:

• Door: Opt for a sliding or bi-fold door instead of hinged ones, because it'll save on the space a hinged door will consume when it's open. A sliding door will work wonders for your shower/bath area too.

• Mirror: Here's a fixture that you can afford to go big on; the bigger the reflective surface is, the more light it will reflect. Wall mirrors, especially, are great for opening up spaces.

• Vanity sink: Most people build a cabinet below the sink for storage purposes, but this only serves to eat up visible space. A pedestal sink or floating vanity, however, will make a more gorgeous alternative.

• Fixtures: Reclaim your visible space by getting fixtures (sinks, toilets etc.) that are more compact-sized.

28 HomeImprovement

• Storage: Maximise storage by utilising niches within your bathroom to hold your grooming products. This will cut down on cabinets that stick out and consume unnecessary visible space. If you must have shelves and the like for additional storage, build open ones that flow from floor to ceiling to draw the eyes upwards.

• Enclosure: Go for a glass divider in your shower/bath area instead of shower curtains to give your bathroom a more open feel. If you must, you can also choose frosted glass panels for added privacy.

• Floor tiles: Avoid less visual chopping by opting for larger floor and wall tiles that match your colour theme. With fewer grout lines and a less busy tile design, you create the illusion of a flowing canvas for the eyes to roam.

PROBLEM 4: CLUTTER A more common problem than most people realise, clutter can severely reduce the amount of visible space in the bathroom and make it appear smaller than it really is. Clutter is also bad for your mental/ physical health, and may even interfere with your daily life e.g. getting ready for work on time every morning.

SOLUTION: Set aside some time and run a very in plastic boxes. thorough spot-check on what you keep In fact, there in the bathroom. WAYS TO 5in theGo Living Green Room

Living a happier and healthier lifestyle is a holistic feat, yet it can be easily achieved if you put your mind into it. Christine and Lilian Wu suss out the green changes you can kick-start in your living room.

With the green revolution gaining momentum all over the world, it’s little wonder that going green has become a popular trend in interior design. Be that as it may, an eco-friendly interior design doesn’t have to be tedious. In fact, here are 5 simple ways you can use in your living room to kick-start a greener and healthier lifestyle.

1 Let Nature in What better way to spruce up your abode than with Mother Nature? Flex your green thumbs by planting your own. A potted plant in your living room is instantly a conversation piece, especially if the plant is unique and exotic. Plants are also believed to have immediate and even long-term effects on our emotional reactions, moods and social behaviour. On top of these feel-good qualities, plants such as Peace Lily have the ability to remove indoor pollutants like pesticides and carbon monoxide. They often build up in the home, contributing to the ‘sick building syndrome’ that can result in symptoms like allergies and headaches. Not up to caring for too many plants? Then opt for low maintenance plants such as cactus.

2 Lights Out Save on energy and your utility bills by utilising eco- friendly light bulbs such as the Philips LEDbulb. The average monthly utility bill for, say, a HDB 4 room flat can be rather high so it really does make economical sense to switch your light bulbs to energy saving ones. The Philips LEDbulb, for instance, can last 15 times as long as incandescent ones. LED bulbs also don’t cause heat build-up within the room, so you can cut back on the usage of cooling appliances such as air-conditioners.

Available at the Philips Showroom, Philips Branded retail stores and leading hypermarkets. Prices starting from $9.90.

3 Accessories of Sustainability They teach our kids to recycle, reuse and reduce in school, but do you follow the same philosophy too? If you’ve always viewed recycled furniture and accessories as a rather icky and questionable source of style, then it’s time to change your mind. Unearth gems of nostalgia as you trawl through shops like The Heritage Shop^ and rediscover the beauty of yesteryear in your living room. There is a huge variety of items here, with prices ranging from as cheap as $8 to a few hundred dollars depending on the rarity of the item, its age and condition. We even found a white mesh evening bag in pristine condition! Other charming items like the push button telephone that was issued by Telecoms (former body of Singtel) will definitely be the centre of attention in your revamped living room.

4 Preloved Furniture Yet another way to ease the stress on your wallet is to go down the vintage route; that is to buy second-hand image courtesy of Like That One furniture from retailers such as Like That One. Such furniture are often restored with loving technique, so you can be sure that it’ll be just as beautiful as when it was first made. 40 Before the Makeover

Like many homeowners, Simon and Madam Seah have a clear vision of what they want for their home. First and foremost on their priority list is that the interior design should be disabled-friendly as Simon moves about on a wheelchair. The cluster house they had picked out at Verdana Villas to be their new home is already outfitted with an elevator, so it's up to Louis Chia from Archétype Pte Ltd to rework the blank slate into a home that is contemporary yet practical. The family appears to be rather close too, so Madam Seah wanted their personal preferences to be taken into account as well. Another intriguing thing about this family is their strong leaning towards Fengshui, which will see their Fengshui Master's advice playing an important part in Louis' designs to come.

Homeowners' Wish List

Aside from being modern and functional, the design should also take both the family's personal preferences and their Fengshui Master's advice into serious consideration. For example, irregular shapes are to be avoided so Theme the family tends to go for accessories or furnishings that are either square ›› or round in shape. Another priority is to facilitate Simon's movement throughout the house, so little details like a grab bar next to the toilet in his bathroom are at the top of Madam Seah's list of requirements.

Interestingly for this family, each member has their own colour theme as advised by their Fengshui master: blue or grey for Simon, grey for Madam Seah, yellow for Samuel and green for Silas. The master bedroom, for instance, will be done in cool colours as their Fengshui Colour master had advised that such colours will be beneficial to Simon. Three Palette shades of blue were chosen for variety: Candy Blue, Latio and Ethan ›› Blue. Even the choice of green colour for the kitchen cabinets is not without reason, according to Madam Seah. Apparently the Thai monk who was one of her husband's patients had advised her to choose green since the family members' Chinese zodiac signs are that of herbivores. In this case, green represents the diet of their respective zodiac animals.

Being an avid cook, Madam Seah found the pre-existing kitchen too small and unsuitable for preparation of Chinese cuisine as it Kitchen was designed to be a dry kitchen. Since she didn't want her cooking ›› activities to affect the rest of the house, she decided to convert the house's basement into a wet kitchen—a more practical solution because it is more spacious.

The floor plans In-depth designs by Louis Poring over materials

Samuel favoured a classic look for his bedroom, which should also be nature-inspired and loft-like. To achieve the right feel, yellow tones and wooden furniture are to feature heavily in the room. In addition, Louis recommended building a platform with a full-length headboard for the bed to create the elevated experience that Samuel desired.

Sons' Silas, on the other hand, preferred a more contemporary theme so he Bedrooms opted for design elements such as a futon-style bed and a relaxation ›› corner. Additional lights on key features such as his wall-mounted shelves will also play a starring role in the bedroom because Silas felt that they will infuse his bedroom with a modish ambience.

Meanwhile, rainbow blinds that cater perfectly to the young men's privacy standards are to dress the windows in their respective rooms.

A dazzling variety of The homeowners make a few Louis hard at work laminates important decisions!

42 For many, a fish pond is a tranquil retreat in a cosmopolitan city, so the homeowners and their two sons wanted a look that reminds them of Exterior wood. A brown wood-like tile was selected for the pond while the wall (Fish Pond) behind the water fountain will be a nature-inspired stonewall. In the ›› meantime, fibreglass lining the pond will protect the water's quality for the pond's future residents: the turtles, koi and freshwater plants.

The Hiccups

• There was a defect in an entire batch of tiles, which resulted in the tiles warping after installation. The whole wall had to be demolished but Hafary replaced it without additional cost. The homeowners chose a new tile design and the carpentry installation was delayed as a result. • Silas wanted Louis to propose a new design so his bedroom was put on hold while a totally new design was prepared. Everything, including the TV console, bed, feature wall and study table, was changed.

FallMAGNIFIQUE*! in love all over again in a French affair with Country Corner from Lee & Lee Lifestyle By Lilian Wu

ROMANCE TV CONSOLE ROMANCE BOOKCASE GUSTAVIEN DRESSER

There is always something irresistibly charming about French-inspired country interior design. Having evolved from the picturesque hamlets found in Southern France, the theme consists of furniture and accessories that evoke the rustic nature of the French countryside where many things are passed down from generation to generation. It is this very desire to capture sweet memories of the past that explains why the pieces often get the “distressed” or “antique” treatment to reflect the good old days. If you're into the gentle appeal of the French countryside, then you'll love these pieces from the Country Corner collections. We especially adore the Florentin Hand-painted Limited Edition Dresser with its lovely motifs, which is entirely hand-painted à la lacca povera—an Italian interpretation and perfection of French decoupage. The main body is covered with acrylic paint and a veil of cellulose varnish to preserve the patina. Consequent layers of paint are then applied by hand, scraped, sanded and aged so as to produce a masterpiece that looks and feels like an antique heirloom. Très bien* indeed! I have been fortunate enough to have been involved in Feng Shui for most of my adult life. What is “unfortunate about this though, is the tragedy of how people can take the smallest things in Feng Shui and blow it out of proportion.

Things that have a miniscule or non-effect in Feng Shui are made to look like scary monsters that will eat your liver if given a chance. And you see them everywhere these days. Couples going crazy over the Feng Shui effect of having a certain colour for their curtains, trying any technique to ‘energize’ every nook and cranny of their house with oriental décor…. some even secretly resorting to hiding stones under their bed or tying tassels on their doorknobs.
