Coffin Bay Progress PRESIDENTS REPORT Association

Hello Coffin Bay,

Our Hall is looking a bit of a mess at the moment, the Bar area, foyer and front steps have all been guttered, tiles ripped up and now waiting to be re tiled, painted and new shelves and cupboards installed. Can’t wait to see it all finished

To save a few dollars Les, Barefoot Bill and Trevor Dickie, our neighbour, took the old tiles up which ended up being a much harder job than they first thought, well done guys you did a great job. We are already planning up coming events, next Christmas was even mentioned which I don’t even want to think about.

A special thankyou to Holly Gill for taking over the publication of the Sun, really appreciate it Holly. We have been working with Council trying to sort out the problems at the Rec Park in regards to the Bore water and watering system. There will be a Boring Contractor in the area at the end of February, we have forwarded his name and number onto Council so hopefully that will be a start. If we can save our grass then hopefully we can sort out who will mow it.

UP Coming Events • Supper Dance - Date to be advised • Easter Egg Hunt for the kids - Easter Sunday on the Foreshore, starting at 8am • BAMM Easter Sunday 12pm-6pm • Clean up Australia Day Coffin Bay Sat 3rd May in the town for Families with Kids & the Coffin Bay Road for others. More information in the April Sun

On a personal note, I would like to thank all those that helped make the Australia Day Community Breakfast a success. So many donated money, food and plates, cups etc, their time to set up, cook, serve and pack up, this is what makes it a Community breakfast, thankyou. Raine and Horne, Coffin Bay & donated the delicious bacon which was a real treat and Clayle from 34 Degrees South donated her mobile chiller which made keeping everything cool so easy.

Cheers Carol Fathers

Gardening Tip by Phil Siviour Coffin Bay Gardening Service

The soil has worked hard producing summer vegies, so after harvest is finished, replace soil nutrients before replanting. You can do this by adding compost, well-rotted manure, worm castings and organic manure in pellets (from your garden centre).

Have you considered putting in a wicking bed? Water is stored in a reservoir below the soil, where it is protected from evaporation. The water is ‘wicked’ upwards where it becomes available to the roots of plants. There is a lot of information available online about building and maintaining a wicking bed. This month’s edition of ABC Organic Gardener magazine is a good resource, available from the newsagent or free at the local library

-Meet the Locals-

TAWNY FROGMOUTH

A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to hold one of these birds. It was found by Jayne and Bluey Filmer on the Oyster Walk almost adjacent to the 1802 Restaurant. Not an auspicious location for a young Tawny Frogmouth! It offered little resistance when stroked and snuggled cosily on being held. There was no visible sign of damage – no missing feathers, no broken wing or leg bones.

They are the size of magpies but very different in appearance. To look at their feathers up close is to look at a miracle of evolution. It is impossible to distinguish their markings from the bark of a gumtree. The stubby but very wide beak is concealed by bristles. Their feet have evolved so that they can firmly roost along a thick branch; posing stock-still and facing upwards, it is looking at a broken-off fork in a tree. You can look and look and look but still not see them!

Tawny Frogmouths are nocturnal creatures, mostly feeding on insects including beetles, spiders and centipedes, with an occasional vertebrate snack such as a mouse or frog. Their numbers are declining due to habitat loss through land clearance and deaths from ingesting poisoned prey. Because insects are attracted to street lamps/car headlights they are also prone to being road kill.

Accumulating evidence is showing that many species of birds have long-term pairings, Tawnies included. Ornithologist Gisela Kaplan in her book “Bird Bonds” gives this poignant description – “ …. a Tawny Frogmouth that never left the side of its partner after it had been hit and killed by a car. The surviving partner then suddenly died after a “vigil” of four days, never moving from the partner’s side, just quietly whimpering.”

The tale of the young tawny found on the Oyster Walk had a happy ending. It was taken care of by Rob and Jo Smith who have many years of experience looking after injured reptiles and birds. They thought that it was partially stunned, probably from being hit by a car. Initially, it needed some help eating and the photo shows Rob feeding him a cockroach – yuk! However, an encouraging sign was that the food was being processed and coming out the other end. After a week, the bird was released but would only flutter to the ground. A second attempt another week on was successful. It flew high into a tree. After the mishap, we hope, it will find a mate, live a long life and raise lots of kids.

South Australian Bushfire Garden Revival Lower Eyre Peninsula

“Calling on gardeners to help restore gardens in SA’s bushfire affected areas”

SA Bushfire Garden Revival is an initiative run by volunteers who grow plants and collect seeds, bulbs and other garden related tools and ornaments to assist re-establish gardens impacted by fires in

The group was founded by Kristy Barnes after the Sampson Flat fire, then provided assistance after the Pinery fire and is now back in action following the fires in SA over the 2019/20 summer. The project is about assisting those affected by bushfires to recover and re-establish gardens and home orchards burnt in the fires. This is being done by engaging volunteers to grow the plants and collecting donations of garden equipment such as garden tools, pots, ornaments and garden furniture, all things that make a garden.

The project is about so much more than just growing plants to hand over to recipients. There is a strong emphasis on the benefits of gardens and gardening for mental health and helping those impacted by bushfire to not only re-establish their gardens but also their wellbeing through sowing the seeds of renewal through a new garden. For many people gardens are such an important part of their lives as places of enjoyment, creativity and contemplation. In some cases, people have lost gardens that they have been tending for years and this is another big part of their loss. An important consideration often overlooked is that home gardens are often not covered by insurance. This is where the SABGR group can assist.

SAGBR is growing and collecting for all areas in SA affected by bushfire, but due to biosecurity issues with sending material to only financial donations and donations of gardening equipment such as tools and pots, etc. may go to there. The group now has 25 collection points extending from Adelaide and surrounds down to Port Elliot and now to Eyre Peninsula.

The Lower Eyre Peninsula group is calling for anyone interested in growing to contact them to find out how they can help. They are also calling for donations of most plants, pots, tools, seeds, bulbs, hoses, sprinkler, all sorts of garden related equipment. They would love support from businesses too.

The timeline is for propagating plants now through to June with the collection points opening for receiving plants from June onwards until the end of July. The plants and garden equipment will be made available through garden centre style open days free for recipients ready for spring planting.

If you would like to donate or be a volunteer grower or register for assistance you can contact Kerryn McEwan 0498 387 961 email [email protected] or check SA Bushfire Garden Revival Lower Eyre Peninsula

COMMUNITY FIRE SAFETY

The committee of the Coffin Bay Yacht Club recently moved to

further assist our community by expanding our fire safe policy.

The Yachty was identified as Coffin Bay’s

BUSH FIRE LAST RESORT REFUGE

The committee saw the need for a club generator for this important role. It was purchased, installed and is run and maintained by the committee and volunteers.

Please follow CFS advice re your bushfire survival plan.

****CBYC has now expanded its role by making the clubrooms available to residents who need shelter on identified catastrophic fire rating days and with power outages. We will be open by 1 lam on those days. The generator will run our air conditioners and therefore provide a cooler place to shelter.

ON SUCH DAYS WE WILL IDENTIFY THAT THE CLUB IS OPEN BY SIGNAGE AND OR A FLAG AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE CLUB.
