  • Cobbling Together the Dream Indian Eleven
COBBLING TOGETHER THE DREAM INDIAN ELEVEN Whenever the five selectors, often dubbed as the five wise men with the onerous responsibility of cobbling together the best players comprising India’s test cricket team, sit together to pick the team they feel the heat of the country’s collective gaze resting on them. Choosing India’s cricket team is one of the most difficult tasks as the final squad is subjected to intense scrutiny by anybody and everybody. Generally the point veers round to questions such as why batsman A was not picked or bowler B was dropped from the team. That also makes it a very pleasurable hobby for followers of the game who have their own views as to who should make the final 15 or 16 when the team is preparing to leave our shores on an away visit or gearing up to face an opposition on a tour of our country. Arm chair critics apart, sports writers find it an enjoyable professional duty when they sit down to select their own team as newspapers speculate on the composition of the squad pointing out why somebody should be in the team at the expense of another. The reports generally appear on the sports pages on the morning of the team selection. This has been a hobby with this writer for over four decades now and once the team is announced, you are either vindicated or amused. And when the player, who was not in your frame goes on to play a stellar role for the country, you inwardly congratulate the selectors for their foresight and knowledge.

  • Cricket Memorabilia Society Postal Auction Closing at Noon 10
CRICKET MEMORABILIA SOCIETY POSTAL AUCTION CLOSING AT NOON 10th JULY 2020 Conditions of Postal Sale The CMS reserves the right to refuse items which are damaged or unsuitable, or we have doubts about authenticity. Reserves can be placed on lots but must be agreed with the CMS. They should reflect realistic values/expectations and not be the “highest price” expected. The CMS will take 7% of the price realised, the vendor 93% which will normally be paid no later than 6 weeks after the auction. The CMS will undertake to advertise the memorabilia for auction on its website no later than 3 weeks prior to the closing date of the auction. Bids will only be accepted from CMS members. Postal bids must be in writing or e-mail by the closing date and time shown above. Generally, no item will be sold below 10% of the lower estimate without reference to the vendor.. Thus, an item with a £10-15 estimate can be sold for £9, but not £8, without approval. The incremental scale for the acceptance of bids is as follows: £2 increments up to £20, then £20/22/25/28/30 up to £50, then £5 increments to £100 and £10 increments above that. So, if there are two postal bids at £25 and £30, the item will go to the higher bidder at £28. Should there be two identical bids, the first received will win. Bids submitted between increments will be accepted, thus a £52 bid will not be rounded either up or down. Items will be sent to successful postal bidders the week after the auction and will be sent by the cheapest rate commensurate with the value and size of the item.

Vol. 59 No. 41 • April 17, 2018 • Pages 8 President’s Pick Dear friends, Staying in Tune It isn't often that the Rotary International President Elect comes visiting. And it isn't often that our Club's member is felicitated by the Rotary International president Elect, and that too right here in sunny Mumbai. And so April 6th. was a special day for us. A day when our Trustee and Past President Arvind Jolly was felicitated by Barry Rassin (President Elect R.I.) on his becoming an Arch Klumph Member. For those who came in late, this is a distinction conferred on a member who has contributed at least USD 2,50,000/- to the movement, and is named after the sixth President of Rotary International. Congratulations to Arvind. He truly is such a fine gentleman and jolly good person (sorry I couldn't resist that pun). And now let's read what he himself had to say about his special day. Regards, Ramesh Narayan "The experience was most enjoyable and certainly Rashmi and I would have very fond memories of this event for years to come. A lot of students face problems in the General Awareness / Business Awareness / General Knowledge section of MBA entrance exams like XAT, IIFT, and SNAP. That happens because they start "preparing" for it once they are done with their Quant, LR/DI and Verbal prep (sometimes even after CAT) - which is often too late. Ideally, no one should have to prepare for something like General Awareness. But sadly, we don't live in an ideal world. And even those, who try to prepare with the help of websites, news services, etc. suffer from too much information. They cannot filter the relevant information and often give up on GK all-together. It should not be that way. Even if you can devote just 3 hours a week to GK from now on, you will be very well placed when the time comes. It doesn't take much because you don't need a high score to clear the cutoff. The problem is most students are so blissfully unaware about what is going on in the world and clearing the cutoff is not that big a deal. Just do an experiment, next time you are in a group of students preparing for Management Entrance exams, ask them - "Who is the Vice President of India?" You will get what I am talking about. As a first step, you need to know what actually gets asked in the exam and you can find that in the PDF. You will find 6 past year GK papers (with answers) in this PDF. Version : 6.1 They are: IIFT 2012 IIFT 2013 IIFT 2014 IIFT 2015 IIFT 2016 IIFT 2017 And for more, you can have a look at my GK course available here: https://handakafunda.com/gk-general-knowledge-xat-iift-snap If you have any more questions about the course, please send me an email on [email protected] or call me on 09765142632.

Eric Hobsbawm once called sport one of the most significant practices of the late nineteenth century.
