The Four ”Rings” Advent The Second Sunday of Advent may well be called “Sunday of the Public Works and Highways”. The prophet Baruch in our first reading and Christ forerunner John the Baptist talk about road building and repair. “Make the ground level,” “straighten the crooked ways,” and “make the rough road smooth”. Both prophets are not, however, concern about road repairs. They are conveying a message that the morally crooked ways must be eradicated, the rough edges of our character must be made smooth and warped attitudes straightened. Just as we have four candles in the Advent wreath, there are also four “rings” of Advent: Prepa-ring, clea-ring, implo-ring, and bea-ring. Advent is the time for PREPA-RING. May our hearts, like the manger, be cleansed of whatever thorns, thumbtacks, or toxic chemicals that prevent us from welcoming the Baby Jesus. Confession is the best cleansing preparation for Christmas. In a humble and contrite heart, that is where Christmas happens. Advent is the time for CLEA-RING. It is the time for us to reach out to each other in peace and reconciliation. In humility, let us break down the walls of hatred and indifference and be real brothers and sisters again. A lot of issues cannot be solved in arguments and discussions or in legal battles. When we al- low grace to operate, that’s when doors and hearts are really opened. Advent is the time for IMPLO-RING. Prayer is the key to a meaningful Ad- vent and Christmas season. It is in these quiet, hidden moments with the Lord in grateful prayer that we know and feel “what’s it all about.” Wishing you peace, serenity and prayerful moments amidst the rush and buzz of this time of the year. Advent is the time for BEA-RING. All our personal preparing, clearing, and imploring will amount to nothing if they do not lead us to become better and more loving persons. The grace of God must bear fruit in concrete expressions of love, especially to the less fortunate among us. Christmas is not so much about being cozy and nice, or being spiritually high, as about becoming instru- ments of God’s concrete love wherever we are. Fr. George

Maryja Czas adwentu to zaproszenie, aby stanąć obok Maryi i uczyć się od Niej wiary. Oddajemy Jej cześć, dziękujemy za wyproszone łaski i prosimy o Jej wstawiennictwo w naszych najróżniejszych potrzebach. Maryja staje przed nami jako doskonała nauczycieka na drodze zawierzenia Bogu. Pójdżmy za Maryją, prosząc o łaskę umocnienia naszej wiary.

Pierwszy krok w wierze – „fiat”. Maryja wypowiada swoje zawierzenie: „Oto Ja służebnica Pańska, niech Mi się stanie według Twego słowa”. Wypowiadając swoje „fiat”, Maryja podejmuje odważny krok w wierze i oddaje siebie całkowicie Bogu, Panu życia i śmierci. Niczego nie zostawia dla siebie i nie szuka ludzkich zabezpieczeń. Kiedy pozwalamy Bogu wkroczyć w nasze życie, coś zaczyna się dziać. Życie zaczyna nabierać barw.

Drugi krok w wierze – służba. Droga wiary Maryi prowadzi od oddania siebie Bogu, do oddania siebie w zwyczajnej, ale zarazem gorliwej służbie człowiekowi, czego wyrazem jest jej pośpiech w drodze do domu Elżbiety. Tym właśnie jest ewangelizacja, nie tyle radowaniem się z posiadania Jezusa, ale poniesieniem Jezusa innym, by się Nim uradowali.

Trzeci krok w wierze – uwielbienie. Gdy Elżbieta wypowiada błogosławieństwo nad Maryją , ta ostatnia kieruje uwagę na Boga, wypowiadając swoje Magnifcat. Uwielbienie płynące z serca, którego uczy Maryja chroni przed przywłaszczaniem Bożych darów i uznaniem ich za swoje.

Czwarty krok w wierze – próba. Gdy podążamy drogą wiary, nie unikniemy prób wiary. Dla Maryi okoliczności narodzenia i śmierci Jezusa były wielką próbą wiary, z której wyszła zwycięsko, przyjmując z zawierzeniem wolę Boga, trwając przy Synu w każdych okolicznościach.

Piąty krok w wierze – szara codzienność. Maryja w Nazarecie uczy nas, jak żyć na co dzień przy boku Jezusa, w Jego obecności. Św. Łukasz pisze, że Maryja chowała wiernie te wspomnienia w swym sercu, co oznacza pielęgnowanie wrażliwości duchowej i postawę rozeznawania woli Bożej na co dzień, a także ducha wierności słowu Bożemu. Maryja rozważająca w swym sercu słowa i czyny Jezusa przypomina Kościołowi wszystkich czasów, co powinno być treścią rozważań: Słowo Boże, Ewangelia.nm„Błogosławiona jesteś, któraś uwierzyła”. Te słowa skierowane do Maryi przy nawiedzeniu Elżbiety ukazują Jej całą drogę, drogę wiary, od zwiastowania do Kalwarii, do wieczernika Zielonych Świąt, do wniebowzięcia.

Our Lady of Guadalupe at St. Joseph the Worker Here at St. Joseph, the Guadalupano Ministry has an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe that is taken to a differ- ent home each week. When the Ministry visits a home, they pray the rosary and preach the word of God. While the image is at the home, the family prays the rosary at least once a day. In addition, the Guadalupano Minis- try organizes a novena leading up to December 12th in which other ministries participate. Then, on the evening of December 11th, the congregation gathers to sing, pray and share in other Mexican traditions. At midnight, she is serenaded with “Las Mañanitas” and other traditional songs. In Mexico, December 12th is a national hol- iday dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Our Lady of Guadalupe remains a powerful symbol of Mexican identity and faith. Many believers will make a vow to Virgin Mary, promising to visit her image in the Basilica if she intercedes to have their prayers an- swered. As people migrate to the U.S. in search of the American Dream, it becomes nearly impossible to travel to Mexico to visit the Basilica to fulfill vows. For this reason, the Spanish-speaking community at St. Joseph felt that it was important to have an image and altar that resembles the one at the Basilica and can be venerat- ed here in their church.

Father Krzys travelled to the Basilica in Mexico City to obtain permission from the bishop and designer of the altar to replicate the design at St. Joseph. Everything from the placement of the wood to where the nails are hammered was taken from the Basilica. In addition, the bishop wrote a letter stating that visiting the image at St. Joseph will fulfill all vows made to Our Lady of Guadalupe.

The Guadalupano Ministry and other teenagers from the Latino community have been working hard to per- form a play about the apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The play will be performed (in Spanish) on De- cember 9th at 7:30pm and December 11th at 8:30pm in Mulcahey Hall. Everyone is invited! Simbang Gabi is a nine-day Novena masses in preparation for the coming of our Savior Jesus Christ. There are many churches participating in this Filipino tradition throughout the archdiocese. For a list of masses each day of the novena, please visit pvm.archchicago.org/events/simbang- gabi-2018.

Simbang Gabi, pre-dawn Masses, prepare for Christmas in Philippines

On each of the nine mornings leading up to Christmas, Filipino Catholics gather in the pre-dawn hours for Simbang Gabi, a novena of Masses that anticipates the celebration of Christmas. Churches are generally filled out the doors, or the Mass is held outside to accommodate the crowd. The timing of the Mass, which begins as early as 4 a.m., helps make the event special and highlights the seasonal sense of anticipation. The experience of rising early in the morning and traveling to church in the dark adds an element of sacrifice and specialness. The experience of eating together among the crowds in the plaza after Mass, before heading to work, adds a sense of festiveness and camaraderie. Many Filipinos believe that petitions brought to the baby Jesus at each of the nine Simbang Gabi Masses are especially likely to be answered.

The Simbang Gabi tradition grew out of a practice brought by the Spaniards, who held Masses known as Misas de Aguinaldo or Misas de Gallo in December in the pre-dawn hours for field laborers in honor of the Annunciation. The tradition was discontinued in Spain and most of the rest of the world but is a vibrant practice among Filipino Catholics.

Simbang Gabi practices are fairly consistent across the Philippines, as is evidenced by observations in three provinces, Bulacan, Cebu and Davao in December 2014. At the Santo Niño Parish in Bustos, Bulacan, as at many other parishes in the Philippines, church bells begin to ring at 3:30 a.m., after which loudspeakers play Christmas songs to invite the churchgoers for the Simbang Gabi at 4:30 a.m., by which time the church is full. The first rows are occupied by some of the elder members of the church, in seats that are regularly theirs, while young people stand in school uniforms in the back and outside.

The Simbang Gabi Mass, which usually focuses on how one becomes prepared for Christmas, is celebrated with particular attention and style. Video on this page shows examples of Simbang Gabi Masses at churches in Bulacan, Cebu and Davao.

In interviews at parishes in the three provinces, devotees gave a variety of reasons why they attended. Many young attendees, aside from pointing out that their school might expect it, stressed that it was a chance to participate in an important tradition of their parents and grandparents, and a way of unifying them with family and friends. Others described it as an important sign of respect, celebration or preparation of Christmas, the event it anticipates.

A minority echoed a traditional belief about the novena, that the sacrifice of attending the pre-dawn Masses makes it as powerful as a panata, a vow of allegiance made in the hope or expectation that one’s wishes will be granted by the baby Jesus. Panata petitions ranged from spiritual to very material, from wishes for peace and reconciliation, to protection from accidents like typhoons and earthquakes, to good health or healing, finishing studies or board exams, getting a good job locally or internationally, or even for acquiring a house.

Food is an important part of Simbang Gabi. These days are a time of incessant dining rather than fasting, and a time of family gatherings and reunions with friends and relatives, of strolling, picnics, swimming – any way that Filipino families can find to celebrate. Until the economic crisis of the 1990s, churches often served an Agape meal after Mass, sponsored by a family or a group of families, an association, or a company. It was usually composed of hot coffee and local delicacies such as various kinds of rice cakes: bibingka, a rice cake cooked in a clay pot oven, puto, puto bumbong, a rice roll made from purple rice, kutsinta, biko, and pan de sal or arroz caldo porridge. Many of these foods were labor intensive and specially associated with the season. Of the churches observed for this research, only one church in Cebu, the Archdiocesan Shrine of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, still serves an Agape meal every morning for Simbang Gabi churchgoers. Others often serve one for volunteers like choir members, sacristans, and lay ministers. These days, sidewalk vendors outside the churches do a brisk business by selling the traditional rice-cake delicacies, including bibingka, and puto bumbong.
